Predicted Surficial Blue Carbon Maps for Blackbird Creek and St. Jones River Tidal Salt Marshes using 2014-2023 Landsat-8 OLI records

These data tables reflect the predictions of a gradient boosted trees model for predicting soil organic matter (SOM) in the surficial layer of tidal marsh soils. The model was trained on soil core data related to its corresponding spectral characteristics from decadal Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager data (see associated publication Warner et al. "Leveraging a decade of Landsat-8 spectral records for mapping blue carbon storage in tidal salt marshes"). This is a modeled data product designed to illustrate spatial patterns of organic matter storage as predicted by satellite data.

Nitrogen cycling in accidental urban wetlands in the Salt River (central Arizona, USA): the effects of season, inundation and plants on denitrification (2013-2014)

This project sought to understand the spatial and temporal patterns and drivers of denitrification in nine accidental wetlands in the Salt River in Phoenix, AZ. Accidental urban wetlands are the result from human activities but are not designed nor managed for any specific purpose; thus, they are useful for examining the effects of both human and non-human drivers of ecosystem processes. For this study, we examined how seasonal monsoon and winter floods affected denitrification in different plant patch types at wetlands with different inundation regimes. Inundation regimes of the study wetlands are driven by storm drains that supply urban baseflow to the wetlands; however, the timing and frequency of discharges differ among storm drains resulting in different durations of inundation. Some storm drains provide enough baseflow that wetlands remain inundated year-round (perennially inundated) while others provide very little baseflow, so inundation is largely in response to rain events (ephemerally inundated). Intermittently inundated wetlands receive enough baseflow to remain inundated for part of the year. At each study wetland, we identified 2-4 dominant plant patch types, including one unvegetated patch. We took 2-4 soil samples from each patch type at each site in each season (pre-monsoon, post-monsoon and winter rainy seasons). We measured denitrification potential, soil organic matter, soil moisture, soil nitrate, soil texture, and water depth. In addition to soil characteristics, we also collected data on plant traits for each patch type. Plant functional traits provide one method to examine mechanistic links between plants and ecosystem processes. Measured plant traits were above- and belowground biomass, above- and belowground C:N ratios, and rooting depth.

Wildlife along the Salt River corridor of the greater Phoenix, Arizona, USA metropolitan area: results of a camera-trapping project (2020-2021)

The goal of this research project was to evaluate how wildlife populations responded to the gradient of urbanization, water, and vegetation. We deployed 43 wildlife cameras across the gradient of urbanization January 2021 to January 2022. We documented a suite of wildlife species, from small mammals and birds to large mammals. Data present whether a species was detected at a site during this time period.

Turbidity of a Salt Marsh within the Altamaha River estuary, GA, USA, 2015-2017

We measured turbidity along a transect from channel to marsh interior for 1 year, beginning in June 2016 at a salt mash in the Altamaha River estuary. We measured turbidity (NTU) with three optical back scatter sensors to in a shore normal transect, with one in the channel (YSI 6600), and two on the marsh surface. The “marsh edge sensor” was 2.4m from the channel edge (Seapoint, RBR Solo) and the “marsh interior sensor” was 18m from the edge (Seapoint, RBR Duo; Figure 1c). The sensors measured every 15 minutes and were equipped with automatic wipers to reduce biofouling. Following retrieval, the turbidity time series data was filtered to remove any erroneous points and times when the sensors were fouled or exposed (Ganju et al. 2005). Turbidity was then calibrated to suspended sediment concentration with local sediment resulting in the calibration equation SSC (mg/L) =1.33*Sensor Turbidity (NTU) (R2=0.9345, n=26, p<<0.001).
