Data from: Patients with primary biliary cholangitis and fatigue present with depressive symptoms and selected cognitive deficits, but with normal attention performance and brain structure

Background: In primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) fatigue is a major clinical challenge of unknown etiology. By demonstrating that fatigue in PBC is associated with an impaired cognitive performance, previous studies have pointed out the possibility of brain abnormalities underlying fatigue in PBC. Whether structural brain changes are present in PBC patients with fatigue, however, is unclear. To evaluate the role of structural brain abnormalities in PBC patients severely affected from fatigue we, therefore, performed a case-control cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) study and correlated changes of white and grey brain matter with the cognitive and attention performance. Methods: 20 female patients with PBC and 20 female age-matched controls were examined in this study. The assessment of fatigue, psychological symptoms, cognitive and attention performance included clinical questionnaires, established cognition tests and a computerized test battery of attention performance. T1-weighted cMRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans were acquired with a 3 Tesla scanner. Structural brain alterations were investigated with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and DTI analyses. Results were correlated to the cognitive and attention performance. Results: Compared to healthy controls, PBC patients had significantly higher levels of fatigue and associated psychological symptoms. Except for an impairment of verbal fluency, no cognitive or attention deficits were found in the PBC cohort. The VBM and DTI analyses revealed neither major structural brain abnormalities in the PBC cohort nor correlations with the cognitive and attention performance. Conclusions: Despite the high burden of fatigue and selected cognitive deficits, the attention performance of PBC patients appears to be comparable to healthy people. As structural brain alterations do not seem to be present in PBC patients with fatigue, fatigue in PBC must be regarded as purely functional. Future studies should evaluate, whether functional brain changes underlie fatigue in PBC.

Data from: Selective attention by priming in host search behavior of 2 generalist butterflies

In phytophagous insects such as butterflies, there is an evolutionary trend towards specialization in host plant use. One contributing mechanism for this pattern may be found in female host search behavior. Since search attention is limited, generalist females searching for hosts for oviposition may potentially increase their search efficacy by aiming their attention on a single host species at a time, a behavior consistent with search image formation. Using laboratory reared and mated females of two species of generalist butterflies, the comma, Polygonia c-album, and the painted lady, Vanessa cardui (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), we investigated the probability of finding a specific target host (among non-host distractors) immediately after being primed with an oviposition experience of the same host as compared to different host in indoor cages. We used species-specific host plants that varied with respect to growth form, historical age of the butterfly-host association, and relative preference ranking. We found improved search efficacy after previous encounters of the same host for some but not all host species. Positive priming effects were found only in hosts with which the butterfly has a historically old relationship and these hosts are sometimes also highly preferred. Our findings provides additional support for the importance of behavioral factors in shaping the host range of phytophagous insects, and show that butterflies can attune their search behavior to compensate for negative effects of divided attention between multiple hosts.

Selective auditory attention in CI users - EEG data

<h2><span>Experiment</span></h2> <p><span>We conducted a selective auditory attention experiment,&nbsp;</span><span>where stimuli were presented in the free room over two </span><span>loudspeakers separated by</span> <span>60&deg;. </span><span>Before each trial, participants received instructions directing&nbsp;their attention to a specific audiobook. This guidance was&nbsp;provided visually on a screen, featuring a symbol indicating the selected audiobook&rsquo;s direction. </span><span>Initially,&nbsp;we conducted eight trials in a single-speaker scenario, where&nbsp;only one audiobook was presented from alternating sides. Each&nbsp;trial lasted approximately two minutes. After every two trials,&nbsp;the presented story changed. In twelve subsequent trials, we implemented a competing-speaker paradigm, where two stories were presented simultaneously. However, the distractor story started 10 s later, affording participants time to discern the target speaker. We further&nbsp;randomized the organization by starting with the block of s2&nbsp;stimuli instead of s1 for every second participant.&nbsp;</span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h2><span>EEG Recording</span></h2> <p><span>We collected EEG data using an actiCHamp System (BrainProducts GmbH, Germany) equipped with 32 electrodes. For&nbsp;each participant between two and four electrodes were removed due to their proximity to the CI magnet and sound&nbsp;processor. The sampling rate was set at 1 kHz, and an online&nbsp;low-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 280 Hz was implemented.&nbsp;Prior to the experiment, electrode impedances were maintained below 20 kΩ. We monitored the impedances through<br>both the single-speaker and competing-speaker scenarios, and,&nbsp;if needed, applied additional conductive gel to ensure that the&nbsp;impedances remained below the threshold of 20 kΩ.&nbsp;For synchronizing the audio and the EEG recording, we&nbsp;used an audio splitter and recorded the presented audio as two&nbsp;auxiliary channel over the EEG recorder with two StimTraks&nbsp;(BrainProducts GmbH, Germany) as adapter. We performed an&nbsp;offline correlation analysis between the recorded audio signal&nbsp;and delayed versions of the clean stimuli.
