Indonesia Text Simplification Dataset
<p>This is a dataset for Indonesian text simplification. Dataset input is provided by Liputan6 dataset (Koto et. al., 2020) and referenced by the id attribute as a document number, and the sentence_index attribute as the sentence position inside the corresponding document. The dataset consists of 95 sentences with four cases: relative clauses (30), appositions (14), conjoined clauses (in complex sentences; 30), and anaphora (26). Notice that these cases are not mutually exclusive. There are 33 sentences that don’t handle these cases.</p>

Data from: Simplification of shade tree diversity reduces nutrient cycling resilience in coffee agroforestry
1. Agroforestry systems are refuges for biodiversity and provide multiple ecosystem functions and services. Diverse multispecies shade tree canopies are increasingly replaced by monospecific shade, often dominated by non-native tree species. The loss of tree diversity and the nature of the dominating tree can have strong implications for ecosystem functions, e.g. nutrient cycling ultimately reducing crop production. 2. To understand direct and indirect impacts of shade trees on nutrient cycling and crop production, we studied coffee agroforestry systems in India along a gradient from native multispecies canopies to Grevillea robusta (Proteaceae) -dominated canopy cover. We identified 25 agroforests, across a broad rainfall and management gradient and assessed litter quantity and quality, decomposition, nutrient release, soil fertility and coffee nutrient limitations. 3. Increasing G. robusta dominance affected nutrient cycling predominantly by; (1) changing of litter phenology, (2) reducing phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), and zinc (Zn) inputs via litterfall, decelerated litter decomposition and immobilization of P and Zn due to low quality litter, (3) reducing soil carbon (C) and micronutrients (especially sulphur (S), Mg and B). Coffee plants were deficient in several nutrients (nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn), Mg and S in organic and B in conventional management). (4) Overall G. robusta dominated agroforests were characterized by a reduction of P cycling due to low inputs, strong immobilization while decomposition and antagonistic effects on its release in litter mixtures with coffee. 4. Synthesis and applications. The conversion of shade cover in coffee agroforestry systems from diverse tree canopies to canopies dominated by Grevillea robusta (Proteaceae) reduces the inputs and cycling of several micro- and macronutrients. Soil fertility is therefore expected to decline in G. robusta dominated systems, with likely impacts on coffee production. These negative effects might increase under the longer dry periods projected by regional climate change scenarios due to the pronounced litter phenology of G. robusta. Maintaining diverse shade canopies can more effectively sustain micro- and macronutrients in a more seasonal climate.
Data from: Landscape simplification reduces classical biological control and crop yield
Agricultural intensification resulting in the simplification of agricultural landscapes is known to negatively impact the delivery of key ecosystem services such as the biological control of crop pests. Both conservation and classical biological control may be influenced by the landscape context in which they are deployed; yet studies examining the role of landscape structure in the establishment and success of introduced natural enemies and their interactions with native communities are lacking. In this study, we investigated the relationship between landscape simplification, classical and conservation biological control services and importantly, the outcome of these interactions for crop yield. We showed that agricultural simplification at the landscape scale is associated with an overall reduction in parasitism rates of crop pests. Additionally, only introduced parasitoids were identified, and no native parasitoids were found in crop habitat irrespective of agricultural landscape simplification. Pest densities in the crop were lower in landscapes with greater proportions of semi natural habitats. Furthermore, farms with less semi-natural cover in the landscape and consequently, higher pest numbers, had lower yields than farms in less agriculturally dominated landscapes. Our study demonstrates the importance of landscape scale agricultural simplification in mediating the success of biological control programs and highlights the potential risks to native natural enemies in classical biological control programs against native insects. Our results represent an important contribution to an understanding of the landscape-mediated impacts on crop yield which will be essential to implementing effective policies that simultaneously conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Data from: Landscape simplification shapes pathogen prevalence in plant-pollinator networks
Species interaction networks, which play an important role in determining pathogen transmission and spread in ecological communities, can shift in response to agricultural landscape simplification. However, we know surprisingly little about how landscape simplification-driven changes in network structure impact epidemiological patterns. Here, we combine mathematical modeling and data from eleven bipartite plant-pollinator networks observed along a landscape simplification gradient to elucidate how changes in network structure shape disease dynamics. Our empirical data show that landscape simplification reduces pathogen prevalence in bee communities via increased diet breadth of the dominant species. Furthermore, our empirical data and theoretical model indicate that increased connectance reduces the likelihood of a disease outbreak and decreases variance in prevalence among bee species in the community, resulting in a dilution effect. Because infectious diseases are implicated in pollinator declines worldwide, a better understanding of how land use change impacts species interactions is therefore critical for conserving pollinator health.
Maltese Simplification Corpus
<p>A document-level parallel corpus of simple and complex Maltese texts.</p> <p>A number of websites of governmental and non-governmental Maltese organisations publish documents in a writing style called 'easy to read', which is meant to be accessible for children and people with particular special needs. These are sometimes included as 'translations' of other official publications that are deemed important for said target audience.</p> <p>This project is a collection of plain texts extracted from these documents with the aim of creating an opportunity to study the differences between easy-to-read text and non-simplified text. It is useful for tasks such as automatic text simplification for the Maltese language, although the size and domain variability of the corpus is extremely limited at the moment.</p> <p>Repository: https://github.com/mtanti/maltese-simplification-corpus</p>
Text simplification in second language: process and product data
<p>This folder contains data on text simplification collected from an experimental study with second-language university students. We adopted a pre-test and post-test design, and randomly divided participants into experimental and control group. In the pre-test, participants were given an extract of a corporate report dealing with sustainability and were asked to revise it to make it easier to read for a lay customer. Subsequently, they took part in training. The experimental group received training on both plain language and sustainability, while the control group received training exclusively on the topic of sustainability. In the post-test session (2-3 days after the pre-test), all participants were assigned a second extract of a corporate report dealing with sustainability, and were asked again to make it easier to read for a lay customer by applying what they had learned from their respective training. This design allowed us to examine the impact of plain language training on text simplification (revision) tasks.
