<p><span>Dogs are known to persist less in problem-solving tasks independently. While most of the studies so far have reported results based on experiments in pet dogs, conclusive evidence from free-ranging subpopulations is lacking. Free-ranging dogs are primarily scavengers and require problem-solving abilities to survive. We provided dogs with a familiar or an unfamiliar task in the presence of conspecifics. Both the tasks provided a single food-reward upon solving. We coded success, latency, and the duration of active engagement of the dogs in this study. We compared them with an earlier published dataset where individual dogs were tested in identical experimental set-ups. Our findings show that dogs have higher success rates in both the familiar and unfamiliar tasks when tested in the presence of conspecifics than when alone, suggesting a role of social facilitation. Furthermore, the presence of conspecifics facilitated dogs to approach faster and engage longer in the unfamiliar task than when tested alone. We provide the first evidence that social facilitation may play a crucial role in free-ranging dogs, especially in the context of problem-solving. </span></p>
Data from: A social-ecological database to advance research on infrastructure development impacts in the Brazilian Amazon
Recognized as one of the world's most vital natural and cultural resources, the Amazon faces a wide variety of threats from natural resource and infrastructure development. Within this context, rigorous scientific study of the region's complex social-ecological system is critical to inform and direct decision-making toward more sustainable environmental and social outcomes. Given the Amazon's tightly linked social and ecological components and the scope of potential development impacts, effective study of this system requires an easily accessible resource that provides a broad and reliable data baseline. This paper brings together multiple datasets from diverse disciplines (including human health, socio-economics, environment, hydrology, and energy) to provide investigators with a variety of baseline data to explore the multiple long-term effects of infrastructure development in the Brazilian Amazon.
Data from: Knockouts of high-ranking males have limited impact on baboon social networks
Social network structures can crucially impact complex social processes such as collective behaviour or the transmission of information and diseases. However, currently it is poorly understood how social networks change over time. Previous studies on primates suggest that 'knockouts' (due to death or dispersal) of high-ranking individuals might be important drivers for structural changes in animal social networks. Here we test this hypothesis using long-term data on a natural population of baboons, examining the effects of 29 natural knockouts of alpha or beta males on adult female social networks. We investigated whether and how knockouts affected (1) changes in grooming and association rates among adult females, and (2) changes in mean degree and global clustering coefficient in these networks. The only significant effect that we found was a decrease in mean degree in grooming networks in the first month after knockouts, but this decrease was rather small, and grooming networks rebounded to baseline levels by the second month after knockouts. Taken together our results indicate that the removal of high-ranking males has only limited or no lasting effects on social networks of adult female baboons. This finding calls into question the hypothesis that the removal of high-ranking individuals has a destabilizing effect on social network structures in social animals.

<p>In the early 20th century, Paul Otlet carved out a role for bibliography and documentation as a force for positive social change. While his ideals appeared to be utopian to many of his contemporaries, his activism and vision foreshadowed the potential (for good and evil) of the World Wide Web. This paper discusses the role that KO professionals could play in enhancing the positive social impact of the web of knowledge, and how our roles are shifting from the more passive role of descriptive cataloguers, to proactive designers of positive and productive knowledge environments.</p>

<p>This repository contains the resources in our paper <strong>[Social Context in Political Stance Detection: Impact and Extrapolation]</strong><br><em>Ramon Villa-Cox, Evan Williams, Kathleen M. Carley</em></p> <p>In this work, we explore the performance and extrapolation power of political stance-detection models using an existing large-scale weakly-labeled Twitter dataset collected around the 2019 South American Protests [1]. We construct transformer-based user and tweet encoders to embed users in a low-dimensional space using their text and ego-networks. We then train heterogeneous graph attention networks to predict user stances and contrast their ability to extrapolate stance predictions to different country contexts.</p> <p>The protest dataset, which was collected between September 25 and December 24 of 2019, contains 550k labeled users split unevenly across the four countries and contains over 36 million labeled tweets. It contains an additional 1.1 million unlabeled neighbors and 40 million unlabeled tweets. This repository includes the anonymized datasets necessary to reproduce the results and tables of the paper. In addition, we include the corresponding anonymized resources for the new weakly-labeled dataset around the 2020 Chilean Referendum presented in our paper.</p> <p>Following Twitter's January 2023 User Protection Policy update, tweet or user IDs related to sensitive political events cannot be publicly shared. We respect this policy, and only share:</p> <ul> <li>The anonymized user ID, their weak-stance label, the label predicted by each model and the data split (train, validation or test) the user was assigned to.</li> <li>Anonymized user network edges used by the different network classifiers</li> <li>The type of tweet the edge represents (Original, Reply, or Quote)</li> <li>The User Embeddings produced by the User Transformer and which serve as input for the different network models.</li> </ul> <p>This repository is comprised of the following files:</p> <ol> <li>Main_Predictions.7z: Compressed folder containing anonymized user IDs their stance label and each model’s prediction for the country it was trained on. The performance metrics for each model can be obtained based on the test split for each country. Constructing a social-behavioral association network to study management impact on waterbird community ecology using digital video recording cameras
<p>Studying social behavior and species associations in ecological communities is challenging because it is difficult to observe the interactions in the field. Animal behavior is especially difficult to observe when selection of habitat and activities are linked to energy costs of long-distance movement. Migrating communities tend to be resource specific and prefer environments that offer more suitability for coexisting in a shared space and time. Given the recent advances in digital technologies, digital video recording systems are gaining popularity in wildlife research and management. We used digital video recording cameras to study social interactions and species-habitat linkages for wintering waterbird communities in shared habitats. Examining over 8,640 hours of video footages, we built tetrapartite social behavioral association network of wintering waterbirds over habitat (n=5) selection events in sites with distinct management regimes. We analyzed these networks to identify hub species and species role in activity persistence, and to explore the effects of hydrological regime on these network characteristics. Although the differences in network attributes were not significant at treatment level (<i>p</i> = 0.297) in terms of network composition and keystone species composition, our results indicated that network attributes were significantly different (<i>p </i>= 0.000, <i>r<sup>2</sup></i><sup> </sup>= 0.278) at habitat level. There were evidences suggesting that the habitat quality was better at the managed sites, where the formed networks had more species, more network nodes and edges, higher edge density, and stronger intra- and inter-species interactions. In addition, we also calculated the species interaction preference scores (SIPS) and behavioral interaction preference scores (BIPS) of each network. The results showed that species synchronize activities in shared space for temporal niche partitioning in order to avoid or minimize any potential competition for shared space. Our social network analysis (SNA) approach is likely to provide a practical use for ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation.</p>
HYDROUSA Social Impact Assessment results
<p>This dataset is part of HYDROUSA Deliverable 6.2 and include the results of the questionnaire introduced to 213 stakeholders. The scope of the Deliverable is to serve as an insightful guide for the HYDROUSA project's commitment to circular resource management. By applying an integrated approach, leveraging the Theory of Change methodology, with user-data evaluation, this report presents the narration of how innovative and circular technologies can serve societal benefits. As the findings emerge through communities, the potential for positive impact becomes evident, aligning technical ingenuity with social advancement.Through questionnaires and interviews we quantify inputs, outputs, and outcomes, this evaluation captures the immediate effects but also the potential long-term intentions of change.</p> <p>This data-driven analysis was applied through 213 inputs from stakeholders to support us to make informed decisions for the exploitation of the solutions and the optimization of these systems in terms of performance and required outputs. Furthermore, the analysed results identified through this evaluation provide actionable insights for maximizing the potential of successful implementation with positive impact for the community. By assessing public acceptance and willingness to apply circular approaches for water management, the report empowers users to align their strategies with community preferences, fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration.<br><br></p>
Evolution of digital consumer behavior: A bibliometric analysis of the impact of social networks on purchase determinations

Impacts of additional noise on the social interactions of a cooperatively breeding fish
<p>Anthropogenic noise is a global pollutant known to affect the behaviour of individual animals in all taxa studied. However, there has been relatively little experimental testing of the effects of additional noise on social interactions between conspecifics, despite these forming a crucial aspect of daily life for most species. Here we use established paradigms to investigate how white-noise playback affects both group defensive actions against an intruder and associated within-group behaviours in a model fish species, the cooperatively breeding cichlid <i>Neolamprologus pulcher</i>. Additional noise did not alter defensive behaviour, but did result in changes to within-group behaviour. Both dominant and subordinate females, but not the dominant male, exhibited less affiliation and showed a tendency to produce more submissive displays to groupmates when there was additional noise compared to control conditions. Our experimental results therefore indicate the potential for anthropogenic noise to affect social interactions between conspecifics and that there can be intraspecific variation in the impacts of this global pollutant.</p>
