Data for : Social equity shapes zone-selection: Balancing aquatic biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services delivery in the transboundary Danube River Basin

<p>Freshwater biodiversity is declining, despite national and international efforts to manage and protect <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/freshwater-ecosystem">freshwater ecosystems</a>. Ecosystem-based management (EBM) has been proposed as an approach that could more efficiently and adaptively <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/ecological-balance">balance ecological</a> and societal needs. However, this raises the question of how social and ecological objectives can be included in an <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/integrated-management">integrated management</a> plan. Here, we present a generic model-coupling framework tailored to address this question for freshwater ecosystems, using three components: biodiversity, ecosystem services (ESS), and a spatial prioritisation that aims to balance the spatial representation of biodiversity and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/evolutionarily-stable-strategy">ESS</a> supply and demand. We illustrate this model-coupling approach within the Danube River Basin using the spatially explicit, potential distribution of (i) 85 fish species as a surrogate for biodiversity as modelled using hierarchical Bayesian models, and (ii) four estimated ESS layers produced by the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/artificial-intelligence">Artificial Intelligence</a> for Ecosystem Services (ARIES) platform (with ESS supply defined as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/carbon-sequestration">carbon storage</a> and flood regulation, and demand specified as recreation and water use). These are then used for (iii) a joint spatial prioritisation of biodiversity and ESS employing Marxan with Zones, laying out the spatial representation of multiple management zones. Given the transboundary setting of the Danube River Basin, we also run comparative analyses including the country-level <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/purchasing-power-parity">purchasing power parity</a> (PPP)-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) and each country&#39;s percent cover of the total basin area as potential cost factors, illustrating a scheme for balancing the share of establishing specific zones among countries. We demonstrate how emphasizing various biodiversity or ESS targets in an EBM model-coupling framework can be used to cost-effectively test various spatially explicit management options across a multi-national case study. We further discuss possible limitations, future developments, and requirements for effectively managing a balance between biodiversity and ESS supply and demand in freshwater ecosystems.</p>

The impact of social complexity on the efficacy of natural selection in termites

<p>This repository contains the dataset and markdown files necessary to reproduce the analysis conducted for the article entitled <em>Social evolution in termites reduces natural selection efficacy</em> (NEW TITLE: <em>The impact of social complexity on the efficacy of natural selection in termites</em>). It includes both raw and processed data, as well as all scripts used in the analysis, organized by the order of execution. Instructions for setting up the environment and running the scripts are provided to facilitate replication of the results.</p> <p>Here, we look at the distribution of dN/dS within Blattodea and Isoptera in order to test for a positive relationship with eusociality.</p> <p>The file <strong>analysis.html</strong> is a R-markdown file describing step by step the analysis of the submitted manuscript. Data from: Selection for collective aggressiveness favors social susceptibility in social spiders

Particularly socially influential individuals are present in many groups, but it is unclear whether their emergence is determined by their social influence versus the social susceptibility of others. The social spider Stegodyphus dumicola shows regional variation in apparent leader-follower dynamics. We use this variation to evaluate the relative contributions of leader social influence versus follower social susceptibility in driving this social order. Using chimeric colonies that combine potential leaders and followers, we discover that leader-follower dynamics emerge from the site-specific social susceptibility of followers. We further show that the presence of leaders increases colony survival in environments where leader-follower dynamics occur. Thus, leadership is driven by the "social susceptibility" of the population majority, rather than the social influence of key group members.

Data from: Social group composition modulates the role of last male sperm precedence in post-copulatory sexual selection

<p>In many species, the order in which males mate with a female explains much of the variation in paternity arising from post-copulatory sexual selection. Research in <em>Drosophila</em> suggests that mating order may account for the majority of the variance in male reproductive success. However, the effects of mating order on paternity bias might not be static but could potentially vary with social or environmental factors. To test this idea, we used an existing dataset, collated from an experiment we previously published (Morimoto et al. 2016), with the addition of unpublished data from the same experiment. These previous experiments manipulated larval density in <em>Drosophila</em> <em>melanogaster</em> which generated variation in male and female body size, assembled groups of individuals of different sizes, and measured the mating success and paternity share of focal males. The data presented here provide information on each focal male's mating order and the frequency in which focal males remated with the same females ('repetitive matings'). We combined this information with our previously reported focal male reproductive success to partition variance in paternity into male mating order and repetitive matings across groups that differed in the body size composition of males and females. We found, as expected, that male mating order explained a considerable portion of the variance in male paternity. However, we also found that the impact of male mating order on male paternity was influenced by the body size composition of groups. Specifically, males that tended to mate last had a greater paternity advantage, and displayed lower variance, in groups containing a heterogenous mixture of male body sizes than in groups with a single male body size. Repetitive mating only had a minor contribution to the variance in male paternity share across all experiments. Overall, our findings contribute to the growing body of research showing that post-copulatory sexual selection is subject to socio-ecological influences.</p>
