Soil texture for Saddle Stream Network, 2017

Soil texture is an important hydrologic control. To measure soil texture across the Niwot Ridge LTER Saddle Stream Catchment, surface (0 – 10 cm) soil samples (n = 84) were collected on roughly a 60 x 60 m grid, including sensor network sites. After drying and sieving to less than 2mm, soil size fractions (percent sand, silt, and clay) and corresponding soil texture were determined by laser particle size analysis. Soil size fractions and texture are reported using both United States Department of Agriculture and World Reference Base soil classification standards. Soils were one of four textures: loamy sand, silt loam, sandy loam, and loam. Over half of the soils sampled were sandy loam. This dataset is useful for hydrologic modeling studies and other studies related to understanding alpine hydrology.

Data from: Making soil particle size analysis by laser diffraction compatible with standard soil texture determination methods

The standard sieving, pipette and hydrometer methods for soil particle size analysis (PSA) have three main drawbacks: procedures are tedious, time-consuming, and the results are protocol-dependent. Laser diffraction PSA delivers rapid results using standardized procedures, but so far it has been difficult to reconcile results with those from standard sedimentation methods. The objective of this study was to develop a protocol that would permit direct usage of laser diffraction PSA and render results compatible with current methods. The protocol was developed using standard soil samples from different textural classes. Regression of the laser diffraction PSA against the hydrometer/pipette method yielded coefficients of determination of 0.92/0.9, 0.92/0.94 and 0.99/0.99, and root mean square errors of 0.04/0.05, 0.07/0.06 and 0.05/0.03 for clay, silt and sand, respectively. These statistics are comparable to those obtained by regressing results of the hydrometer against the sieve and pipette methods. A key factor in securing accurate and precise results was limiting the particle size range of the samples by wet sieving the sand fraction. This created representative samples and stable soil dispersed suspensions, allowing accurate estimations of particle size distribution for clay and silt fractions without empirical transformations. Results obtained with the proposed protocol matched those of standard sedimentation analyses for a wide range of soils, encouraging further adoption of laser diffraction for soil PSA.

Context-Dependent Effects of a Reintroduced Ungulate on Soil Properties are Driven by Soil Texture, Moisture and Herbivore Activity

<p>Although there is considerable evidence that large mammalian herbivores influence ecosystem-level processes, studies have reported such widely varying results that generalizations have remained elusive. Here, we use an 18-year-old exclosure experiment – stratified across a landscape heterogeneous with respect to soil texture, moisture and herbivore activity – to understand the variable effects of tule elk (<i>Cervus canadensis nannodes</i>), a native reintroduced herbivore, on soil properties along the coast of northern California. Elk significantly increased soil bulk density and created a compacted layer at shallow soil depth, while decreasing infiltration rate and pH. The effects of elk on bulk density, penetration resistance and pH varied with soil type, being least pronounced in coarse, sandy loams and greatest in loose sand. The effects of elk on nutrient availability varied along gradients of soil texture and moisture. In coarser soils, elk decreased ammonium availability, but increased it in finer soils. Elk also decreased soil moisture content, in part through their positive effect on bulk density, and this effect was most pronounced in coarser soils. Through decreasing soil moisture content, elk also decreased nitrate availability in coarser soils. At greater levels of elk activity (as measured by dung deposition), the elk effect on bulk density was amplified, and this had a corresponding negative effect on nitrate and phosphate availability. Our study has demonstrated that a better understanding of spatial variation in the effects of herbivores on ecosystems can emerge by evaluating their influences across gradients of soil texture, soil moisture, and herbivore activity. These data enabled us to evaluate several frameworks that have been developed to understand the variable effects of herbivores on ecosystems, which is a significant step in reconciling the many competing ideas put forth to explain the context-dependent effects of large herbivores on grazed ecosystems.</p>

Global Soil Texture and Derived Water-Holding Capacities (Webb et al.)

A standardized global data set of soil horizon thicknesses and textures (particle size distributions) was compiled by Webb et al. This data set will be used for the improved ground hydrology parameterization design for the Goddard Institute for Space Studies General Circulation Model (GISS GCM) Model III. The data set specifies the top and bottom depths and the percent abundance of sand, silt, and clay of individual soil horizons in each of the 106 soil types cataloged for nine continental divisions. When combined with the World Soil Data File (Zobler, 1986), the result is a global data set of variations in physical properties throughout the soil profile. These properties are important in the determination of water storage in individual soil horizons and exchange of water with the lower atmosphere. The incorporation of this data set into the GISS GCM should improve model performance by including more realistic variability in land-surface properties. All data are global at a 1 degree resolution and are provided in ASCII format. The primary data consist of 2 files. One file contains the depth and particle size (percent sand, silt, and clay) information for each major continent, soil type, and soil horizon. The other file contains ocean/continental coding (corresponding to FAO/UNESCO Soil Map of the World) (FAO/UNESCO, 1971-1981) and Zobler soil type classifications (Zobler, 1986). A fortran code for reading these data files is provided. In addition to the primary data files, there are also 5 derived data sets available for download: 1) soil profile thickness, 2) potential storage of water in the soil profile, 3) potential storage of water in the root zone, 4) potential storage of water derived from soil texture, 5) data set used to prescribe water-holding capacity in the GISS GCM (Model II).
