Distribution. Sulawesi and adjacent Is (Buton, Kabaena, Muna, Peleng, Lembeh, and on some of the Togian Is); thought to be extinct on Selayar I. Pigs have been widely domesticated through the Indonesian archipelago and beyond. This primarily involved the Eurasian Wild Pig (S. scrofa), but also S. celebensis, the only other species of pig successfully domesticated. Mitochondrial DNA studies of the dispersion of these domesticated forms agree on three major dispersal events, two involving S. scrofa and one S. celebensis. Evidence supports an early human-mediated translocation of S. celebensis to Flores and Timor and two later, separate human-mediated dispersals of domestic pig through islands of SE Asia into Oceania. In addition to Flores and Timor, S. celebensis is also thought to occur in its domesticated form on Halmahera, Lendu, Roti, and Savur Is, and even on Simeulue and Nias Is to the W of Sumatra and far from its island of origin, Sulawesi. In the Moluccas, and possibly elsewhere in this region, introduced S. celebensis are thought to have hybridized with other introduced pigs of S. scrofa derivation, and apparent hybrids between these species are now reported to survive on a number of islands, including Salawatti, Great Kei, Dobu, Seram, Ambon, Bacan, Ternate, Morotai, and New Guinea. It is also reported that in the 19" century the sows of domestic pigs in Sulawesi frequently mated with wild animals, after which they returned to their villages. in Suidae

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COMMUNITY BEHAVIOR AND SOWING OF ABATE POWDER IN PREVENTING AEDES LARVAE AT PASI PEUKAN BARO VILLAGE AND PASI RAWA VILLAGE SIGLI SUB DISTRICT, PIDIE REGENCY

<p>Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Aceh Province in 2022 were recorded at 2,079 cases,, with 16 deaths. with the morbidity rate for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in 2022 amounting to 38 per 100,000 population. Cases of dengue fever in Pidie Regency in 2022 were 318 cases. Research Objective: To determine community behavior towards sowing abate powder to prevent aedes larvae in Kota Sigli Subdistrict, Regency Pidie, Aceh Province, data collected in the form of larva surveys, distribution of research questionnaires and observation were conducted from 24 January to 28 February 2024 with the number of respondent involved 71 respondents in Pasi Peukan Baro village and 84 respondents in Pasi Rawa village, and total were 155 respondents. Research Method: Quantitative research with a cross-sectional study research design. Results: The results of Chi Square analysis in Pasi Peukan Baro village was showed a relationship between knowledge (p-value 0.000) and attitude (p-value 0.016) with community sowing behavior of abate powder in preventing aedes larvae.Meanwhile in Pasi Rawa village there is a relationship between education (p-value 0.028) and knowledge (p-value 0.000) with community sowing behavior of abate powder in preventing aedes larvae. Based on the results of the logistic regression test, the most dominant factors that were significantly related in Pasi Peukan Baro village are the age variable (p-value=0.074, CI 95%=0.032-1.170 OR=0.194) and the variable knowledge (p-value=0.001, CI 95%=3.305-95.053, OR=17.724) while in Pasi Rawa village the most dominant factor is knowledge variable (p-value=0.000, CI 95%=19.089-1831.905, OR=187.000). Conclusion:In Pasi Peukan Baro village there is a relationship between the knowledge variable and attitude variable with community sowing behavior of abate powder in preventing aedes larvae.There is a relationship between education variable and knowledge variable with community sowing behavior of abate powder in Pasi Rawa village.</p>

1. In forest communities, the Janzen–Connell (J-C) hypothesis proposes that species diversity is maintained by non-competitive distance- and/or density-dependent seedling mortality caused by host-specific natural enemies. However, the effects of pathogen associations from nearby conspecifics vs. heterospecifics remain unknown in spatially heterogeneous light environments. 2. Seeds of hardwood species Cornus controversa (Cornus) and Prunus grayana (Prunus) were sown beneath 6–7 Cornus and Prunus adults in both the forest understory (FU) and in gaps (Gap) created by felling all woody vegetation near the focal adults. Seedling growth, mortality, killing agents (e.g. pathogens that cause damping-off and leaf diseases), and root infection by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were investigated. 3. We found strong habitat effects on the expression of soil fungi beneath both tree species. Seedling mortality caused by soil-borne damping-off pathogens was greater in FU than in Gap, and AMF infection, which enhanced relative seedling growth rate, was greater in Gap than in FU. Seedling mortality caused by damping-off pathogens did not differ between Cornus and Prunus seedlings beneath the adults of conspecific or heterospecific adults in both FU and Gap, suggesting little distance-dependence or host preference in the fungus. 4. Beneath the adults of Cornus and Prunus, the most prevalent leaf diseases were zonate leaf blight and angular leaf spot caused by the airborne pathogenic fungi Haradamyces foliicola and Phaeoisariopsis pruni-grayanae, respectively. Although these pathogens attacked the seedlings of both species, conspecific seedlings (i.e. home) showed more severe leaf damage, earlier leaf shedding and/or less defensive behaviour (cell wall defence) relative to heterospecific seedlings (i.e. away), suggesting negative distance-dependent attack (i.e. host preference) for these leaf diseases. As a result, greater seedling mortality was observed for conspecific seedlings under both FU and Gap treatments. 5. Synthesis. In the temperate forest, the J-C hypothesis is largely mediated through the strong negative influence of airborne leaf diseases rather than through soil-borne damping-off pathogens. We found that airborne diseases demonstrated distance-dependent host preferences, which led to greater conspecific seedling damage regardless of environmental light conditions.

Data from: Consequences for piglet performance of group housing lactating sows at one, two, or three weeks post-farrowing

Housing lactating sows with piglets in a multi-suckling pen from around 14 days post-farrowing is common practice in Swedish organic piglet production. However, nursing-suckling interaction is less frequent in multi-suckling pens than in individual farrowing pens, thus affecting piglet performance, e.g., piglet growth. Moreover, piglet mortality is higher in systems using multi-suckling pens. Three management routines whereby lactating sows with piglets were moved from individual farrowing pens to multi-suckling pens at one, two, or three weeks post-farrowing were compared in terms of nursing-suckling interaction and piglet performance. Correlations between nursing-suckling interaction, piglet performance, and piglet mortality were also examined. In total, 43 Yorkshire sows with piglets were included in the study. Nursing-suckling interaction and all piglet performance parameters except piglet mortality did not differ between management routines. Piglet mortality in the individual farrowing pens did not differ between management routines, but piglet mortality in the multi-suckling pen was lower (P&lt;0.05) when piglets were group housed at three weeks compared with one week post-farrowing. Overall piglet mortality was positively correlated with mortality in the multi-suckling pen for piglets group housed at one week (r = 0.61: P&lt;0.05) and at two weeks post-farrowing (r = 0.62: P&lt;0.05) but not for piglets group housed at three weeks post-farrowing. In conclusion, overall piglet mortality could be reduced if sows and piglets are group housed at three weeks post-farrowing and piglet survival the first week post-farrowing is improved.

Revegetation by sowing reduces soil bacterial and fungal diversity

<p><b>Aim:</b> The aim of this study was to understand the effects of revegetation on the diversity of bacteria and fungi in soil by sowing a single species and exploring the underlying mechanism.</p> <p><b>Location:</b> Beijing, China</p> <p><b>Taxon:</b> Plants and Microbes</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> In a short-term ecological restoration experiment, one natural recovery treatment and three seed sowing treatments were chosen to assess their effects on the alteration of fungal and bacterial diversity. Plant species richness, abundance, and height were investigated. The diversity of fungi and bacteria was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing technologies. Linear mixed-effects model analysis was used to examine the effects of different restoration methods on biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Pearson's correlation analysis, analysis of covariance, and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used to examine the relationship between biodiversity and environmental factors.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Species richness and the Shannon-Wiener Index (H') of plants in the sown treatments were lower than in the natural recovery treatment, especially with sowing of <i>Medicago sativa </i>L. Similarly, the sum of the observed species and H' of fungi and bacteria significantly decreased in the sown treatments. Moreover, plant density, community coverage, and soil moisture increased markedly, while soil bulk density decreased in the sown treatments. Importantly, SEM showed that sown treatments reduced the diversity of plants through increasing plant density, while it decreased the diversity of fungi and bacteria through decreasing the plant diversity and increasing soil moisture.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions:</b> Our findings confirm that ecological restoration by sowing could improve soil conditions, but may be unfavorable to the amelioration of soil microbial diversity in the short-term. Restoration practitioners should consider long-term studies on the dynamics of biodiversity in the above- and below- ground after revegetation by native species to achieve goals related to biodiversity conservation.</p>
