Quantifying Hierarchy and Prestige in US Ballet Academies as Social Predictors of Career Success
<p>This data contains aggregated competition outcomes from 6,363 ballet students affiliated with 1,603 schools in the United States, who participated in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) between 2000 and 2021.</p> <p>We adopt a network science and <em>science of science</em> approach that empowers logistic regression models and matching experiments to quantify social prestige and its influence on dancers' careers. The analysis of career success in the performing arts, like ballet, in the context of a competition setting offers a unique opportunity to investigate the social influences on success while controlling for competition performance.</p> <p>Our work reveals the importance of institutional prestige on career success in ballet and showcases the potential of network science approaches to provide quantitative viewpoints for the professional development of careers beyond science.</p>
University of Kansas Field Station: Forest demography, 1980 – 2015. On ten study plots established on three management units all live trees with a dbh > 7.5 cm (3 in) were identified to species, measured, and tagged. Trees were initially measured in 1980/1981 and re-measured in three successive time periods: 1993/95; 2002/03; and 2014/15. Trees will be measured again in 2025/26.
In 1980 researchers at the University of Kansas initiated a long-term experiment monitoring the composition of oak-hickory forest communities at the University’s field station near Lawrence, Kansas. The purpose of the study was to determine how forest species composition varied temporally across distinct habitats that varied in topography, elevation, sun exposure, management history and successional stage. Ten permanent sites were sampled approximately each decade with data collection periods of 1980/81, 1993/95, 2002/03, and 2014/15. Trees with a minimum diameter at breast height (dbh) of ≥ 7.5 cm were tagged, identified to species and measured. Trees will be measured again in 2025/26.
UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Plant Reproductive Success
These data describe annual estimates of seed set for seven common salt marsh plant species at the San Dieguito Wetland collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012.
The relationship between early succession rates and soil properties in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1999-2000
This study represents only one portion of a much larger study involving a wide range of disciplines and several H.J. Andrews Forest researchers. This dataset represents all the soils data collected up through the summer of 1999. In addition, Steve Acker conducted surveys of vegetation and measuring tree growth using cores. Mark Harmon has conducted a survey of coarse woody debris. Future studies could include hydrology and species diversity. When we compared the soil characteristics between slow and expected recovery sites, the only variables showing significant differences were soil moisture, litter depth and substrate induced respiration (SIR) rates at low glucose concentrations. The litter depth was slightly less, soil moisture lower, and SIR rates higher in the slow sites. When we compared soils in adjacent uncut forests, we found that field respiration rates were lower in forests adjacent to slow recovery sites than to normal sites suggesting that these sites may have inherently lower productivities. We concluded that slow recovery after clear-cutting is most likely related to physical site characteristics; i.e. steepness of slope and aspect. There did not appear to be any difference in soil depth.
Soil C, N, P, and Frankia nifD-K RFLP genotypes distribution from Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession 2005
This dataset contains genetic characterizations of Frankia inhabiting Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession sites in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF). Characterizations were done using PCR-RFLP on the nifD-K spacer region of the Frankia genome. The position of each plant and each nodule were mapped in order to examine spatial patterns in Frankia distribution within sites. Soil chemistry data, including C, N, P, and pH, were also collected from mineral and organic layers.

Soil nitrogen: Long-Term Nitrogen Deposition During Grassland Succession
The purpose of this experiment is to measure how initially disturbing an area and adding nitrogen over a long time will affect the number of species, the type of species present, the amount of annual growth, and the change from year to year in the growth of each species in a plant community which is also relieved of grazing by large and small mammals. This experiment is conducted within fields (A, B, and C) which were initially low in soil nutrients. The ground was disturbed by thoroughly disking the area prior to establishment of the experiment. There are 8 different levels of nitrogen addition with other nutrients added to ensure that nitrogen remains the limiting nutrient, and a control which receives no nutrients. Nitrogen fertilizer (NH4NO3) is applied twice per year, once in early May and once in late June. There are six replicates of each treatment per field. The treatments were randomly assigned to plots of size 4 by 4 meters. The plots are in 6 plot by 9 plot grids with 1 meter aisles between plots. The plot grids are enclosed by a fence to keep out mammalian herbivores. Gophers are trapped and removed as they appear. In the spring of 1992, subexperiments E097 and E098 were established. E097 is in fields A and C where randomly selected plots within each treatment no longer receive fertilizer. E098 is in field B where randomly selected plots within each treatment are burned. Note that the design of E002 is similar to E001 except E002 was thoroughly disked prior to establishment.
