The cultivation produces large quantities of green waste, up to 50 kg per hectare per day. In this experiment we investigated the potential of co-composting rose waste on a small scale. The objective was to increase the understanding of composting lignocellulosic rose waste, which will help with the implementation of composting practices within Kenyan rose production and thereby reduce its negative ecological impact.</p> <p>In a small-scale composting system (30L) the evolution of five mixtures was closely monitored in terms of their physico-chemical parameters. Furthermore, the in-vitro disease suppressive capacity of mature rose waste was assessed.&nbsp;</p>

The Potential of Fragipans in Sustaining Pearl Millet during Drought Periods in North-Central Namiba (dataset)

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Sandy soils with fragipans are usually considered poorly suited for agriculture. However, these soils are cultivated in north-central Namibia as they can secure a minimum harvest during droughts. To understand the hydrological influence of fragipans in these soils, Ehenge, and what makes them valuable, their soil moisture content was measured over a time span of four months. These data were then compared to a deep soil without fragipan, Omutunda, which is more productive during normal years, but less productive during droughts. The results illustrate that the combination of sandy topsoil and shallow fragipan has beneficial effects on plant available water during dry periods, because of three reasons: (i) The high infiltration rate in the sandy topsoil, (ii) the prevention of deep drainage of water by the fragipan, and (iii) the limited evaporation losses through the capillary rise in the sand. Dataset to Model the Sustainability of a Primary School Digital Education Curricular Reform and Professional Development Program

<p>This dataset contains the quantitative teacher data used to analyse the sustainability of an in-service teacher training program for Digital Education that took place from September 2019 to March 2020 in the Canton Vaud in Switzerland. As such, the study follows up on the 350 teachers over a year after the end of their professional development program had ended in order to model the sustainability of the reform,&nbsp; understand to what extent sustainability had been reached, thus validating the curricular reform model and helping draw recommendations for researchers and practitioners involved in Digital Education curricular reforms. As such, approximately 290 teachers from grades 1-4 in primary school (ages 5-9) responded to two sustainability surveys using web-based questionnaire to provide information relating to their perception of the training sessions and adoption of the computer science activities.</p> <p>The study is accepted for publication&nbsp;in Education and Information Technologies.&nbsp;</p> <p>A README is included and provides additional information regarding :</p> <p>- the requirements for re-use.&nbsp;</p> <p>- the specific content of the 2 csv files</p>

Nutrient Inputs in Mesocosms of an Oligotrophic Lake Fail to Sustain an Algal Bloom, Lake George, NY, 2019

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, and their frequency in oligotrophic lakes—previously thought resistant to such blooms due to their low nutrient levels—has been increasing. This challenges the traditional view that nutrient loading, a major driver of HABs, is less relevant in low-nutrient systems. To investigate whether nutrient enrichment plays a role in HAB development in oligotrophic lakes, we used in-lake mesocosms to assess the effects of varying nitrogen and phosphorus levels on pelagic communities over a 4-week period. The experiment utilized 20 mesocosms (~2,000 L each), with varying phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, all maintaining a 30:1 N:P ratio, representing ten distinct nutrient levels (235:8 µg/L [control], 600:20 µg/L, 1200:40 µg/L, 1800:60 µg/L, 2400:80 µg/L, 3000:100 µg/L, 3600:120 µg/L, 4200:140 µg/L, 4800:160 µg/L, and 5400:180 µg/L). Nutrients were added twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) to sustain the concentrations, with two replicates for each of the ten treatments, totaling 20 experimental units. Water samples were collected to assess water chemistry at two points during the experiment (days 12 and 26). The water chemistry variables measured included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and chlorophyll a. Phytoplankton abundance and abiotic conditions (dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity) were monitored on days 5, 7, 10, 13, 17, 19, 21. Grab samples were also collected on day 12 and 26 to identify phytoplankton species/abundance and zooplankton abundance. In this experiment, nutrient additions enhanced the fluorescence of chlorophyll a (indicative of total phytoplankton) and phycocyanin (a proxy for cyanobacteria), these increases plateaued at low nutrient levels and were transient. Residential housing segregation and urban tree canopy in 37 US Cities; data in support of Locke et al 2021 in npj Urban Sustainability

Our goal in this paper is to examine whether there are similar patterns in the distribution of tree canopy by Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) graded neighborhoods across 37 cities. A pre-print of the paper can be found here: https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/97zcs This data packages contains: 1. City-specific file geodatabases with features classes of the HOLC polygons obtained from the Mapping Inequality Project https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining/, and tables summarizing tree canopy, and in some cases other land cover classes. 2. An *.R script that replicates all of the analyses, graphs, and tables in the paper. Other double checks, exploratory, and miscellaneous outputs are created by the script too as a bonus. Everything in the paper can be done with the script; additional work outputs are also created. 3. A *.csv file containing city, the HOLC grade, and the percent tree canopy cover. This can be used to create the main findings of the paper and this flat file is provided as an alternative to running the R script to extract information from the geodatabases, combine, and analyze them. The intention is that this file is more widely accessible; the underlying information is the same. Redlining was a racially discriminatory housing policy established by the federal government’s Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) during the 1930s. For decades, redlining limited access to homeownership and wealth creation among racial minorities, contributing to a host of adverse social outcomes, including high unemployment, poverty, and residential vacancy, that persist today. While the multigenerational socioeconomic impacts of redlining are increasingly understood, the impacts on urban environments and ecosystems remains unclear. To begin to address this gap, we investigated how the HOLC policy administered 80 years ago may relate to present-day tree canopy at the neighborhood level. The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices

<p><strong>Code and data for Mata et al.'s&nbsp;<em>The ecological and economic benefits of sustainable agricultural practices: Evidence from on-farm trials in broad-acre crops.&nbsp;</em></strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>1. A transition to more sustainable agricultural practices is essential to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of conventional farming and to ensure long-term food security. However, widespread adoption requires robust evidence demonstrating their efficacy and economic viability.</p> <p>2. We co-designed a two-year field trial with farmers and agronomy advisors in Australia to evaluate the ecological and economic outcomes of sustainable agricultural practices for managing the redlegged earth mite, a major pest of Australian crops and pastures. We compared 'Novel' treatments &ndash; representing long-term farmer-implemented sustainable practices based on biological control &ndash; with 'Conventional' treatments, and 'Plus' treatments designed as counterfactuals to disentangle the effects of specific pest control and plant nutrient components.</p> <p>3. Redlegged earth mite densities remained below economic thresholds across all treatments and years, demonstrating effective pest control in both conventional and sustainable systems. Notably, the Novel treatment supported higher densities of beneficial arthropods, suggesting increased biological control potential.</p> <p>4. Yield and gross profit margins were generally similar across treatments, indicating that sustainable agriculture practices can maintain profitability while fostering biodiversity.</p> <p>Practical implication. Our study provides evidence that biological control and biofertiliser supplementation can be effectively used to manage agricultural pests. It also demonstrates the value of close collaboration with farmers and agronomy advisors in conducting ecological field research with real-world applications.</p>

The composite benchmarks-driven analytical protocol is used as an instrument to examine the understanding, effects, and expert opinions concerning the development patterns and current state of open data ecosystems implemented in eight European countries - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Serbia, Sweden. 3-round Delphi method is applied to identify, reach a consensus, and validate the observed development patterns and their effects that could lead to disparities and divides. Specifically, this study conducts a comparative analysis of different patterns of open (government) data initiatives and their effects in the eight selected countries using six open data benchmarks, two e-government reports (57 editions in total), and other relevant resources, covering the period of 2013&ndash;2022.</p> <p>***Description of the data in this data set***</p> <p>The file "OpenDataIndex_<em>2013_</em>2022" collects an overview of 27 editions of 6 open data indices - for all countries they cover, providing respective ranks and values for these countries.&nbsp;These indices are:</p> <p>1) Global Open Data Index (GODI) (4 editions)</p> <p>2) Open Data Maturity Report (ODMR) (8 editions)</p> <p>3) Open Data Inventory (ODIN) (6 editions)</p> <p>4) Open Data Barometer (ODB) (5 editions)</p> <p>5) Open, Useful and Re-usable data (OURdata) Index (3 editions)</p> <p>6) Open Government Development Index (OGDI) (2 editions)</p> <p>These data shapes the third context - open data indices and rankings. The second sheet of this file covers countries covered by this study, namely, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Serbia, Sweden. It serves the basis for Section 4.2 of the paper.</p> <p>Based on the analysis of selected countries, incl. the analysis of their specifics and performance over the years in the indices and benchmarks, covering 57 editions of OGD-oriented reports and indices and e-government-related reports (2013-2022) that shaped a protocol (see paper, Annex 1), 102 patterns that may lead to disparities and divides in the development and benchmarking of ODEs were identified, which after the assessment by expert panel were reduced to a final number of 94 patterns representing four contexts, from which the recommendations defined in the paper were obtained.
