Cross-border Migrant Entrepreneurship in Switzerland
<p>Across the globe, entrepreneurship is promoted as an opportunity for migrants and refugees to use their various economic potentials and contribute to society. Yet, these debates often portray the phenomenon as static and homogenous, ignoring diverse mobility patterns and the fact that not everyone is in a position to start a successful business.<br> The presented study examines the lived experiences of migrants from different<br> backgrounds trying to create a business in Switzerland. Building on the mobility perspective, it explores how entrepreneurship is embedded in individual im/mobility trajectories that go beyond a single movement from an origin to a destination country but include ongoing mobilities between several countries. Methodologically, it is based on 34 biographic interviews, as well as ethnographic observations within an organisation that supports migrant entrepreneurship in Zurich.<br> The study contributes by showing how the interviewees try to capitalise on their experiences of living in multiple places and how this process is shaped by intersecting social markers, such as socio-economic position, gender/ family situation, and legal status.</p> <p>Codebook along DDI standard in pdf and xml formats, scanned maps in jpg format.</p>

Interpolated Clay Fraction and Resistivity model of the Aare Valley, Switzerland
<p>The dataset is an underground model of the Upper Aare Valley in Switzerland. It has been made in the framework of the Phenix project at the University of Neuchâtel. It has been produced by applying the CF prediction method (doi : 10.5194/hess-18-4349-2014) to an EM dataset (doi : 10.5194/essd-13-2743-2021).</p> <p>The Model was then interpolated using Multiple Point statistics, with robust uncertainty quantification (doi : In review).</p> <p>The two files contain the same data, as pointset or gridVTK files. Radar data for 12 hail events in Switzerland
Radar-based daily hail hazard data at 1km spatial resolution for 12 hail days in Switzerland between 2017 and 2021 provided by the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss). Included dates are the ones where hail damage information is available from <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11064767">"Reported hail damage for 12 hail events in Switzerland"</a> (YYYY-MM-DD): 2017-06-27, 2017-07-08, 2017-08-01, 2019-06-15, 2019-06-30, 2019-07-01, 2021-06-20, 2021-06-21, 2021-06-28, 2021-07-12, 2021-07-13, 2021-07-24. The dataset contains two variables based on single-polarization radar data: the Maximum Expected Severe Hail Size (MESHS) and the Probability of Hail (POH).

<p><strong>Anonymised transcriptions (local and translated versions) of 18 Focus Groups with RWPP voters in Spain, UK, Denmark, Germany, Hungay, Switzerland</strong></p> <p>In the UNTWIST project, we have carried out a total of 18 focus groups in Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. They explore RWPP voters’ subjective perceptions of their needs and demands, their horizon of expectations, and their level of ‘gender fatigue’. Groups’ design followed two minimum criteria: same-sex composition (with a minimum of two same sex -male and female- groups per country) and voting behaviour (current voters of RWPP who have previously voted for mainstream parties or abstained or have doubts about RWPP and mainstream or abstain in case of voting for the first time).</p> <p> The composition of the groups varied between 6 and 10 participants per group in all but one partner’s country. In Denmark, all focus groups experienced dropouts. These unforeseen issues led to conducting the focus groups with fewer participants than was initially designed.</p> <p> In 83% of countries, the empirical composition of focus groups was considered and controlled for participants’ age, social class position and level of education.</p> <p>Finally, groups were same-sex moderated.</p> <p>Two comprised folders are provided. One contains the anonymised transcriptions of 18 Focus Groups carried out for WP2 of the UNTWIST project in their local languages. The other contains the IA-translated (Deepl) version of the same focus groups. The values have to be interpreted accordingly: -10'000 means an NDVI difference of -1, +10'000 an NDVI difference of +0.<br><br></em></p> <p>The NDVI difference rasters for annual forest change in Switzerland are created by using Sentinel 2 based NDVI composites (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The code for the generating method can be found in the <a href="https://github.com/HAFL-WWI/Digital-Forest-Monitoring/tree/main/methods/use-case1">waldmonitoring-repository</a>, the method itself is also described and translated in further detail in the <a href="https://wiki.waldmonitoring.ch/index.php/Use_Case_1_-_J%C3%A4hrliche_Waldver%C3%A4nderungen">corresponding waldmonitoring-wiki</a>: For the automatic detection of areas of change, the differences between two years were examined using the NDVI. In order to automatically filter out cloudy images, the maximum NDVI value of all available images of the summer months (June - August) was used for each pixel (10 x 10 m). During this time, practically all the vegetation is green. This results in almost cloud-free, annual raster images with the maximum NDVI ("NDVI maximum composite"). The difference between two years is formed from these composites. The difference values accordingly reflect the strength of the change. </p> <p>As an example for interpretation, values of -0.1 or smaller (closer to -1.0) indicate strong forest changes (e.g. clearing), whereas positive values indicate vegetation regeneration or re-greening of previously unvegetated areas. Using a threshold value (we suggest -0.06 for forest applications), areas with considerable negative change can be separated out and be vectorized (converted to polygons) to create a dataset that can be queried.</p>

A new Geo-Lithological Map (Geo-LiM) for Central Europe (Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and Northern Italy)
<p><strong>We introduce a new geo-lithological map of Central Europe (Geo-LiM) elaborated adopting a lithological classification compliant to the methods more used in the litterature for estimating the consumption of atmospheric CO2 due by chemical weathering. <br> Geo-LiM represents a novelty if compared with published global geo-lithological maps. The first novelty is due by the attention paid in discriminating metamorphic rocks that were classified according to the chemistry of protoliths. The second novelty is that the procedure used for the definition of the map is made available on the web to allow the replicability and reproducibility of the product.</strong></p>

Self-organized Art Initiatives in Switzerland
<p>This data set was created as part of the <a href="https://www.hslu.ch/en/lucerne-university-of-applied-sciences-and-arts/research/projects/detail/?pid=1045" rel="nofollow">"Off OffOff Of?"</a> research project at the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art. It contains information about more than 700 self-organized art initiatives in Switzerland and is the basis for the project website <a href="https://selbstorganisation-in-der-kunst.ch/" rel="nofollow">selbstorganisation-in-der-kunst.ch</a>.</p>

Wind speed and power potential for Switzerland

Spatio-temporal estimation of wind speed and wind power using machine learning: predictions, uncertainty and technical potential. arXiv preprint arXiv:2108.00859.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Summary: </strong></p> <p>This dataset contains an estimation of the average yearly wind speed and of the wind power potential for Switzerland, at a spatial resolution of 250 x 250 meters and over the period from 2008 to 2017.</p> <p>Wind speed data are obtained by modelling data collected at an hourly frequency on a set of up to 208 monitoring stations over the country. The data are then interpolated using a spatio-temporal machine learning model, allowing the estimation of wind speed and its uncertainty at unsampled locations. Then, the modelled spatio-temporal wind speed field is used to estimate the wind power. This is computed based on the characteristic parameters of an Enercon E-101 wind turbine at 100 meters hub height. The latter indicates the distance from the turbine platform to the rotor of an installed wind turbine, showing how high the turbine stands above the ground without considering the length of the turbine blades.</p> <p>The hourly estimations of wind speed are then averaged over each of the ten years studied, for each 250 x 250 spatial location, while wind power data are summed over each year for each spatial unit. Advantages and limitations of the proposed method are discussed in Amato et al. (2021).</p> <p><strong>Data description: </strong></p> <p>The hourly estimation of wind speed and power for Switzerland from 2008 to 2017 are available under request. Here we share the annual values. For both wind speed and power, the data are available over 660697 spatial units of 250 x 250 meters each, covering the entire Swiss territory. <p>This is the dataset related to the back analysis of the 2015 rockfall event from the Mel de la Niva Mountain near Evolène village, Valais canton, Switzerland. It includes the digital surface model and orthophoto generated by structure from motion photogrammetry, the video files of the event, the reconstructed 3D trajectories and blocks, the shapefiles containing the rockfall paths segments and deposited blocks, and the simulation results.</p>
