Spatiotemporal distributions of the thunderstorm and lightning structures over the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

This dataset is for the article titled "Spatiotemporal distributions of the thunderstorm and lightning structures over the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau" which is being submitted to the Remote Sensing for review.

Abstract: Utilizing data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite's Precipitation Radar (PR) and Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS), our study explores the previously uncharted spatiotemporal distributions of thunderstorm and lightning structures over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The structural aspects are crucial when considering the impact of thunderstorm and lightning activity in the atmospheric processes. The vertical development height and horizontal extension area of QTP thunderstorms exhibit distinct spatial patterns, with greater heights in the south and larger areas in the east. The spatial distribution of thunderstorm vertical development height relative to the surface aligns more closely with the horizontal extension, indicating stronger convection in the eastern QTP. Thunderstorm lightning frequency shows an eastward and northward prevalence, while lightning density peaks in the western and northeastern QTP, with a minimum in the southeast. Additionally, lightning duration, spatial expansion, and radiance are more pronounced in the eastern QTP than the western part. Monthly variations reveal heightened values during the summer season for thunderstorm vertical extension, areas with reflectivity greater than 30dBZ, and lightning frequency. Diurnal variations highlight an afternoon increase in thunderstorm vertical and horizontal extension, lightning frequency, duration, and spatial scale. From a statistical perspective, under weak convective conditions, lightning length exhibits a positive correlation with thunderstorm convection intensity, contrasting with the opposite relationship suggested by previous studies. The article further analyzes and discusses the correlations between various thunderstorm and lightning structural parameters, enhancing our understanding of the distinctive features of thunderstorm and lightning activities in the QTP.

New Insights into the Correlation between Flash Rate and Size in Thunderstorms

The uploaded are the figures (involve data) shown in the paper titled "New Insights into the Correlation between Flash Rate and Size in Thunderstorms". This paper is submitting to GRL. The abstract is as follows:

The correspondence of the flash rate and size of the thunderstorms between the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and Central and Eastern China (CEC) and Southern Foothills of the Himalayas (SHF) is unlike the previously recommended reverse correspondence between flash rate and size when they are compared between thunderstorms with different dynamic intensity. We find that the size of the effective charge region (ECR) in the TP thunderstorms may be limited to be small by the generally low charge density and small thunderstorm extent resulting from the weakest convection among the three regions, therefore causing the common appearance of lower rate and smaller size of flash. The results suggest that the weak and strong convections both can generate small ECR, and then the small flash size; meanwhile, the reverse correspondence between flash frequency and size may be premised on that the convection intensity of the contrasted thunderstorms both exceed a certain threshold.

Charge regions indicated by LMA lightning flashes in Hokuriku's winter thunderstorms

The attached is the dataset assoicated with the paper titled "Charge regions indicated by LMA lightning flashes in Hokuriku’s winter thunderstorms" which was submitted to Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.

The charge distribution of some cells in three winter thunderstorms in the Hokuriku region of Japan is investigated based on Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) flash data. The vertical arrangements of charge regions involved in lightning discharges suggest diverse charge patterns, including quad-polar, tripole, positive dipole, inverted dipole, and inverted tripole. The riming electrification between graupel and ice crystals or their aggregations are thought to be responsible for the electrification of most cells. The charging process between snow/aggregates and ice crystals may be responsible for some inverted charge structure occurred above 0 ℃ isotherm and accompanying with weak radar echoes. Convection indicated by the vertical development of radar reflectivity appears crucial to shaping the diverse charge distribution patterns by determining which charging mechanisms occur and where; it also influences changes in height or even the disappearance of the charge regions. The charged cores are distributed from 0.7 to 5.3 km heights and 2 to –31 ℃ temperatures, while the distances between adjacent charged cores with opposite polarities change between 0.2 and 3.4 km, with a mean of 1.3 km. The mean flash duration, and horizontal distance are 425.0 ms and 19.8 km, respectively. The average height, temperature, and power of flash initiations are 2.8 km, −11.9 ℃ and 15.6 dBW, respectively.

High-Spatiotemporal Resolution Observations of Jupiter Lightning-Induced Radio Pulses Associated With Sferics and Thunderstorms

Abstract:
Jupiter lightning discharges produce various kinds of phenomena including radio wave pulses at different frequencies. On 6 April 2019, the Juno Waves instrument captured an extraordinary series of radio pulses at frequencies below 150 kHz on timescales of submilliseconds. Quasi-simultaneous multi-instrument data show that the locations of their magnetic footprints are very close to the locations of UHF sferics recorded by the Juno MWR instrument. Hubble Space Telescope images show that the signature of active convection includes cloud-free clearings, in addition to the convective towers and deep water clouds that were also recognized in previous spacecraft observations of lightning source regions. Furthermore, the detections of 17 VLF/LF radio pulses suggest a minimum duration of lightning processes on the order of submilliseconds. These observations provide new constraints on the physical properties of Jupiter lightning.

Note:
This paper was published in Geophysical Research Letters (https://doi.org/10.1029/2020GL088397). Climatological characteristics of thunderstorm clouds over the Tibetan Plateau indicated by TRMM/RPFs with lightning

The uploaded are the data associated with the figures in the paper titled "Climatological characteristics of thunderstorm clouds over the Tibetan Plateau indicated by TRMM/RPFs with lightning" which is submitted to the JGR.

Using radar precipitation feature (RPF) data from 1998 to 2014 derived from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite observations, we analyzed the activity and properties of thunderstorm clouds (TCs) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and compared them with those over two contrasting land regions (CR1 and CR2). We revealed the properties of TCs over the TP including their flash rate, flash density, flash properties (duration, length and radiance), horizontal and vertical extent, and vertical profiles of reflectivity and compared them with those over CR1 and CR2. We further suggested a comparison of the effective charge regions (ECRs) in the TCs over the three regions and indicated the possible relationship between the flash rate of the TC and number of ECRs as well as between the flash density of the TC and the proportional ECR area. A conceptual sketch map was proposed that reveals the uniqueness of TCs over the TP. The results indicate that TCs over the central TP are most active; generally, the flash rates, flash properties, and sizes of the TCs are greater over the eastern TP than over the western TP. Meanwhile, the TCs over the southern and western TP have a larger vertical extent and flash density, respectively. The analysis of monthly and diurnal variations indicated the prominent preference of TC activity to occur in the warm season and afternoon, and multiple variations of TC properties.
