Heliconiini butterflies can learn time-dependent reward associations

For many pollinators, flowers provide predictable temporal schedules of resource availability, meaning an ability to learn time-dependent information could be widely beneficial. However, this ability has only been demonstrated in a handful of species. Observational studies of Heliconius butterflies suggest that they may have an ability to form time-dependent foraging preferences. Heliconius are unique among butterflies in actively collecting pollen, a dietary behaviour linked to spatiotemporally faithful 'trap-line' foraging. Time-dependency of foraging preferences is hypothesised to allow Heliconius to exploit temporal predictability in alternative pollen resources. Here, we provide the first experimental evidence in support of this hypothesis, demonstrating that Heliconius hecale can learn opposing colour preferences in two time periods. This shift in preference is robust to the order of presentation, suggesting that preference is tied to the time of day and not due to ordinal or interval learning. However, this ability is not limited to Heliconius, as previously hypothesised, but is also present in a related genus of non-pollen feeding butterflies. This demonstrates that time learning likely pre-dates the origin of pollen-feeding and may be prevalent across butterflies with less specialized foraging behaviours.

Schiff Base Crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels with Tunable and Cell Instructive Time-Dependent Mechanical Properties

<p>This folder contains raw data for the paper titled "<strong>Schiff Base Crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels</strong><strong> with Tunable and Cell Instructive Time-Dependent Mechanical Properties</strong>" authored by Taha Behroozi Kohlan, Yanru Wen, Carina Milena Mini, and Anna Finne-Wistrand, published in <em>Carbohydrate Polymers</em> journal. The raw data presented here contains NMR, FTIR, SEC, swelling and stability, and rheology data used to create figures.</p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>The dynamic interplay between cells and their native extracellular matrix (ECM) influences cellular behavior, imposing a challenge in biomaterial design. Dynamic covalent hydrogels are viscoelastic and show self-healing ability, making them a potential scaffold for recapitulating native ECM properties. We aimed to implement kinetically and thermodynamically distinct crosslinkers to prepare self-healing dynamic hydrogels to explore the arising properties and their effects on cellular behavior. To do so, aldehyde-substituted hyaluronic acid (HA) was synthesized to generate imine, hydrazone, and oxime crosslinked dynamic covalent hydrogels. Differences in equilibrium constants of these bonds yielded distinct properties including stiffness, stress relaxation, and self-healing ability. The effects of degree of substitution (DS), polymer concentration, crosslinker to aldehyde ratio, and crosslinker functionality on hydrogel properties were evaluated. The self-healing ability of hydrogels was investigated on samples of the same and different crosslinkers and DS to obtain hydrogels with gradient properties. Subsequently, human dermal fibroblasts were cultured in 2D and 3D to assess the cellular response considering the dynamic properties of the hydrogels. Moreover, assessing cell spreading and morphology on hydrogels having similar modulus but different stress relaxation rates showed the effects of matrix viscoelasticity with higher cell spreading in slower relaxing hydrogels.</p>

Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA): Time-Dependent Convection, Energy Conservation, Automatic Differentiation, and Infrastructure

<p>We update the capabilities of the open-knowledge software instrument Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). The new auto_diff module implements automatic differentiation in MESA, an enabling capability that alleviates the need for hard-coded analytic expressions or finite difference approximations. We significantly enhance the treatment of the growth and decay of convection in MESA with a new model for time-dependent convection, which is particularly important during late-stage nuclear burning in massive stars and electron degenerate ignition events. We strengthen MESA&#39;s implementation of the equation of state, and we quantify continued improvements to energy accounting and solver accuracy through a discussion of different energy equation features and enhancements. To improve the modeling of stars in MESA we describe key updates to the treatment of stellar atmospheres, molecular opacities, Compton opacities, conductive opacities, element diffusion coefficients, and nuclear reaction rates. We introduce treatments of starspots, an important consideration for low-mass stars, and modifications for superadiabatic convection in radiation-dominated regions. We describe new approaches for increasing the efficiency of calculating monochromatic opacities and radiative levitation, and for increasing the efficiency of evolving the late stages of massive stars with a new operator split nuclear burning mode. We close by discussing major updates to MESA&#39;s software infrastructure that enhance source code development and community engagement.</p>

Stable leaders pave the way for cooperation under time-dependent exploration rates

<p>The exploration of different behaviors is part of the adaptation repertoire of individuals to new environments. Here, we explore how the evolution of cooperative behavior is affected by the interplay between exploration dynamics and social learning, in particular when individuals engage on the Prisoner's Dilemma along the edges of a social network. We show that when the population undergoes a transition from strong to weak exploration rates a decline in the overall levels of cooperation is observed. However, both constant and variable exploration rates are shown to be beneficial for cooperation as long as leaders (highly connected individuals) adopt lower exploration rates than followers (less connected individuals). This result suggests that noisy decision-making at the periphery of social networks may, in some cases, translate into major benefits at the population level. </p>

Data from: Time-dependent decline of body-specific attention to the paretic limb in chronic stroke patients

Objective: To examine whether reduced body-specific attention to paretic limb is found in chronic stroke patients in the time-dependent manner. Methods: Twenty-one patients with chronic hemiparesis (10 left and 11 right hemiparesis) after subcortical stroke and 18 age-matched healthy controls were recruited in this study. Standard neuropsychological examinations showed no clear evidence of spatial neglect in all patients. In order to quantitatively measure the spatial attention to paretic hand, a visual detection task for detecting a target appearing on the surface of either a paretic or dummy hand was used. This task can measure the body facilitation effect, which makes faster detection of a target on the body compared with one far from the body. Results: In stroke patients, there was no difference in the reaction time for visual target between on the paretic and the dummy hands, while the healthy participants showed faster detection for the visual target on the real hand than that on dummy one. The Index of the body facilitation effect, subtracting the reaction time for the target-on-paretic hand from that for the target-on-dummy one, was correlated with the duration since onset and with finger function test on the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set. Conclusions: The reduction of the body facilitation effect in paretic limb suggests the decline of body-specific attention to the paretic one in patients with chronic hemiparesis. This decline of the body-specific attention, leading to neglect for paretic limb, will be one of the most serious problems for rehabilitation based on use-dependent plasticity.

Data from: Time-dependent speciation and extinction from phylogenies: a least squares approach

Molecular phylogenies contribute to the study of the patterns and processes of macroevolution even though past events (fossils) are not recorded in these data. In this paper, I consider the general time-dependent birth–death model in order to fit any model of temporal variation in speciation and extinction to phylogenies. I establish formulae to compute the expected cumulative distribution function of branching times for any model, and, building on previous published works, I derive maximum likelihood estimators. Some limitations of the likelihood approach are described, and a fitting procedure based on least squares is developed that alleviates the shortcomings of maximum likelihood in the present context. Parametric and nonparametric bootstrap procedures are developed to assess uncertainty in the parameter estimates, the latter version giving narrower confidence intervals and being faster to compute. I also present several general algorithms of tree simulation in continuous time. I illustrate the application of this approach with the analysis of simulated data sets, and two published phylogenies of primates (Catarrhinae) and lizards (Agamidae).
