A Multi-Year Data Set of Beach-Foredune Topography and Environmental Forcing Conditions at Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands

<p>The&nbsp;data set contains 39 digital elevation models&nbsp;and 11 orthophotos of a&nbsp;beach-foredune system near Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands,&nbsp;a high-wave storm-dominated site with an approximately 25 m high foredune. The elevation data set combines a long duration (six years; January 2013 - January 2019) with a high temporal resolution (typically 2-4 months) and is spatially extensive (1.4 km alongshore) with a high spatial (1 m) resolution. To facilitate the testing and further development of coastal dune evolution models, the data set is supplemented with high-frequency time series of offshore wave, water level and wind characteristics as well as several subtidal bathymetries.</p><p>The data set is described in detail in the following open-access, peer-reviewed paper:</p><p>Ruessink, G.; Schwarz, C.S.; Price, T.D.; Donker, J.J.A. A Multi-Year Data Set of Beach-Foredune Topography and Environmental Forcing Conditions at Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands.&nbsp;<i>Data</i>&nbsp;<strong>2019</strong>,&nbsp;<i>4</i>, 73.&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/data4020073">https://doi.org/10.3390/data4020073</a></p><p>Update December 7, 2023: The data descriptor paper contains a typo related to the rotation of the RD and local coordinate schemes. On page 4/15 it is said that this rotation angle is 177 degrees, it should be 172.8 degrees. A big thank-you to Haoyang Peng&nbsp;(UNSW, Australia) for pointing out that the 177 degrees is incorrect.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Surveys of coastal foredune topography and vegetation abundance, U.S. North Carolina Outer Banks, 2016-2018

These datasets include paired measurements of beach and foredune topographic profiles and dune vegetation surveys along the North Carolina Outer Banks, collected from October 2016 to June 2018. In October 2016, we conducted topographic and vegetation surveys at 55 transect locations along the southern Outer Banks (Shackleford Banks, South Core Banks, and North Core Banks) that were approximately 2 km apart. We then surveyed an additional 34 transect locations along the northern Outer Banks (Ocracoke Island, Hatteras Island, Pea Island, Bodie Island, and False Cape) that ranged from approximately 2-20 km apart in June 2017. In October 2017 and June 2018, we repeated these surveys at the same transect locations. At each cross-shore transect, we measured elevation and position using an RTK GPS and plant species abundance and dune grass density (within 0.25 m2 quadrats) every 5 m from the foredune toe to the foredune heel. We measured the areal percent cover of all plant species found within each quadrat and counted the live and dead shoot density of four native Atlantic Coast dune building grasses (Uniola paniculata, Ammophila breviligulata, Panicum amarum, and Spartina patens).

Snag-fall patterns following stand-replacing fire vary with stem characteristics and topography in subalpine forests of Greater Yellowstone

We assessed the stem- and landscape-level drivers of snag persistence and snag-fall mode within the area burned as stand-replacing fire in the 1988 Yellowstone Fires in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Snags were sampled 14-15 years postfire (n = 131) and again in a separate set of plots 34 years postfire (n = 55). Stem characteristics such as species identity (e.g., lodgepole pine, whitebark pine, Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, and Douglas-fir), diameter at breast height, whether the tree was alive or dead at the time of fire, and the mode of snag-fall (snapping or uprooting) were measured and used to explain patterns of snag persistence and modes of snag-fall. In addition, plot-level environmental variables (e.g., slope, aspect, elevation, stand density) were measured and related to the proportion of stems still standing as snags at 14-15 and 34 years postfire. Data collection is complete and is part of a forthcoming manuscript in revision at Forest Ecology and Management.

Epiphytic macrolichens in relation to forest management and topography in a western Oregon watershed, 1997-1999 (Berryman thesis)

Epiphytic macrolichen communities were sampled in 117 coniferous stands in Blue River watershed of western Oregon. Stands were sampled across various stand types defined by stand structure, according to age classes of the younger tree cohort and remnant tree retention. Remnant trees were those in an older cohort that remained following a stand disturbance that initiated tree regeneration, such as a timber harvest or natural forest fire. Stands were located in upland and riparian forests of two vascular plant series (western hemlock and true fir). Presence and abundance of all epiphytic macrolichen species were sampled in a 0.4 ha circular Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) plot in the 117 stands. Epiphytic lichen biomass (oven-dried, kg/ha) was estimated for three functional groups: nitrogen-fixing cyanolichens, forage lichens, and matrix lichens in 63 of the 117 stands.

MCR LTER: Reef Topography data from Duvall et al., JGR Oceans 2019

This archive contains natural coral reef topography data from the southeast coast of Mo’orea, French Polynesia and idealized reef topography generated with a fractional Brownian motion (fBm) algorithm. These data were used to understand and compare different metrics for quantifying coral reef roughness. These data relate to this publication: Duvall, M. S., J. L. Hench, and J. H. Rosman, in press, Collapsing complexity: metrics to quantify multi-scale properties of reef topography. To appear in Journal of Geophysical Research (Oceans). This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2018). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.

Topography Aspect - Ipswich Watershed - Idrisi Raster File

This datalayer is part of a group of layers used for research in the Ipswich River Watershed. This is the aspect model for the study area. The source elevation tile data was provided on the MassGIS website www.state.ma.us/mgis/massgis.htm in ESRI-format shapefile format and imported into IDRISI software using the ShapeIdr command. The resulting vector elevation files were converted to raster format using successive Lineras macro commands. This has the effect of mosaicing the tiles as well. The raster image was filtered once using a low-pass (mean) filter, then masked to the Ipswich study area parameters (extent). The aspect map was created using the surface analysis module. This datalayer was produced as part of a research project concerning the Ipswich River Watershed.

Topography: Slope - Ipswich Watershed - Idrisi Raster File.

This datalayer is part of a group of layers used for research in the Ipswich River Watershed. This is slope data for the study area. Taken from the source elevation tile data which was provided on the MassGIS website www.state.ma.us/mgis/massgis.htm in ESRI-format shapefile format and imported into IDRISI software using the ShapeIdr command. The resulting vector elevation files were converted to raster format using successive Lineras macro commands. This has the effect of mosaicing the tiles as well. The raster image was filtered once using a low-pass (mean) filter, then masked to the Ipswich study area parameters (extent). We then used the DEM to produce the slope model using the SURFACE module in IDRISI. This datalayer was produced as part of a research project concerning the Ipswich River Watershed.

Figure 2. Summer core area delineation. The straight line with a in Demographic characteristics, seasonal range and habitat topography of Balkan chamois population in its southernmost limit of its distribution (Giona mountain, Greece)

Figure 2. Summer core area delineation. The straight line with a slope of –1 represents the random use of space within the population seasonal range. The curve that sags below the line of random use represents the clumped use of space. The summer core area can be defined at the point whose tangent has slope –1, e.g. 85%, that is, whose tangent is parallel to the line of random use. This is also the point of the curve that is furthest from the line of random use.

The Disproportionate Role of Ocean Topography on the Upwelling of Carbon in the Southern Ocean

<p>This repository contains the filtered Lagrangian particle trajectories associated with the pre-print submitted to Geophysical Research Letters titled &quot; The Disproportionate Role of Ocean Topography on the Upwelling of Carbon in the Southern Ocean.&quot; These trajectories follow the 19,002 particles that last upwell across 1000 m in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in the Southern Ocean. Included are their x, y, z positions and a variety of tracers recorded along their transit in 2-day intervals, as well as a few Eulerian mesh files that are pertinent to the study. The output is the result of a global ocean biogeochemical simulation with the Model for Prediction Across Scales with online Lagrangian particle tracking. Also included are python notebooks which showcase the analysis and visualization used to create the main figures and tables in the text of the manuscript.</p>
