FLAMITS: FLAMmability plant traiTS database

<p><span>FLAMITS database</span> contains 19,972 records of 40 flammability variables (classified according to the measured component of flammability). For each record, relevant details of the flammability experiment are included, such as the burning device, the ignition source, and the burned plant part. In addition, FLAMITS compiles taxonomic and functional data of the studied species and information on the study site (locality, geographic coordinates, biome, biogeographic realm, and fire activity). We compiled data from 295 studies located in 39 countries and distributed across 12 biomes worldwide over the last 62.5 years (1961 to 15th May 2023). The dataset has 1790 plant taxa from 186 families, 833 genera, and 1790 species.</p>

Avoiding growing pains in reproductive trait databases: the curse of dimensionality

<p><strong>Aim: </strong>Reproductive output features prominently in many trait databases, but the metrics describing it vary and are often untethered to temporal- and volumetric-dimensions (e.g., fecundity-per-bout). Using such ambiguous reproductive measures to make broadscale comparisons across taxonomic groups will only be meaningful if they show a 1:1 relationship with a reproductive measure that explicitly includes both a volumetric and temporal component (i.e., reproductive mass-per-year). We sought to map the prevalence of ambiguous and explicit reproductive measures across taxa, and explore their relationships with one another to determine the cross-compatibility and utility of reproductive metrics in trait databases.</p> <p><strong>Location: </strong>Global.</p> <p><strong>Time period: </strong>1990-2021.</p> <p><strong>Major taxa studied:</strong> We searched for reproductive measures across all Metazoa, and identified 19,785 Chordata species, along with 440 species of Arthropoda, Cnidaria, or Mollusca.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We included 37 databases from which we summarised the commonality of reproductive metrics across taxonomic groups. We also quantified scaling relationships between ambiguous reproductive traits (fecundity-per-bout, fecundity-per-year and reproductive mass-per-bout) and an explicit measure (reproductive mass per-year) to assess their cross-compatibility.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Most species were missing at least one temporal or volumetric dimension of reproductive output, such that reproductive mass-per-year could be reconstructed for only 4,786 vertebrate species. Ambiguous reproductive measures were poor predictors of reproductive mass-per-year – in no instance did these measures scale at 1:1.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions:</strong> Ambiguous measures systematically misestimate reproductive mass-per-year. Until more data are collected, we suggest authors use the clade-specific scaling relationships provided here to convert ambiguous reproductive measures to reproductive mass-per-year.  </p>

<p>This file contains a database of hydraulic and stomatal traits that accompanies the paper untitled &quot;Pant resistance to drought relies on timely stomatal closure&quot; publish in Ecology Letters. This database was used to built the Figure of this manuscript.</p> <p>&gt; The first page (&quot;Stem_VCurves&quot;) contains the parameter of vulnerability curve to embolism for 150 species. Family, genus and species names as well as original reference are provided.</p> <p>&gt; The second page (&quot;Pgs90&quot;) contains a first proxy for the water potential causing stomatal closure, it is the value of water potential causing 90% stomatal closure computed from gs versus water potential. Family, genus and species names as well as original reference are provided.</p> <p>&gt; The third page (Ptlp) contains a second proxy for the water potential causing stomatal closure, it is the turgor loss point computed from pressure volume curves. A trait database for Phytoplankton of temperate lakes: numerical file

<p>Phytoplankton is a choice ecological indicator of lake ecological quality. Microalgae composing this biological compartment display a large diversity of morphological, physiological and ecological features, which are useful for understanding the interactions they have with other biotic and abiotic elements. Such kind of information together with classical Uterm&ouml;hl phytoplankton analyses are useful for lake management and basic science. We present here a reference database of morphological (cell and colony sizes, biovolumes, mobility apparatus, colony formation), functional (functional groups of Reynolds, Padisak and Kruk, zooplankton edibility groups), physiological (trophic capacities) and ecological traits (Brettum index values) of more than 1200 taxa often observed in temperate lakes. This database, maintained since the 70&rsquo;s until nowadays is now realized open access. A scientific paper associated to this database presents&nbsp;an overview of its content.</p>

Ecological traits of the world's primates database

<p>Here we present a database on some important ecological traits of the world&rsquo;s primates, including home range size, locomotion type, diel activity, trophic guild, body mass, habitat type, current conservation status, population trend, and geographic realm. We compiled this information through a&nbsp;review of 1216&nbsp;studies published between 1941 and 2018, resulting in a comprehensive, easily accessible and user-friendly database.</p>

Data from: Life-history trait database of European reptile species

Life-history data are essential for providing answers to a wide range of questions in evolution, ecology, and conservation biology. While life history data for many species, especially plants, are available online, life history traits of European reptiles are available only widely scattered in different languages and primarily in printed media. For this reason, we generated a comprehensive trait database covering all European reptile species. Data were compiled by searching the peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed literature. The database covers the whole of Europe and neighbouring Asian and African countries. Traits were categorised under five main headings: Activity / Energy / Habitat; Phenology; Movement; Sexual Maturity; and Morphometry. To ensure that the data were standardised, we defined trait data categories before we started compiling data. All entries were checked by at least one other person. The dataset provides a unique source for meta-analyses and modelling in ecology and conservation biology.
