Global Coastal Transect System (GCTS)

<p>Cross-shore coastal transects are essential to coastal monitoring, offering a consistent reference line to measure coastal change, while providing a robust foundation to map coastal characteristics and derive coastal statistics thereof. The Global Coastal Transect System consists of more than 11 million cross-shore coastal transects uniformly spaced at 100-m intervals alongshore, for all OpenStreetMap coastlines that are longer than 5 kilometers.</p> <p>While the data is available here for download, we highly recommend direct access via the cloud. Marcell Experimental Forest 30-minute water table elevation and temperature from transects of wells in the S2 and S6 peatlands, 2018-ongoing

This data publication contains 30-minute water table elevation and temperature data collected along bog to lagg transects within two watersheds at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. The bog to lagg transects are located on the north and south sides of S2 and S6 peatlands and contain three surface water wells each. The water table elevations provide information to calculate the hydraulic gradients that drive flow to and from the bogs. The collection of these data was funded by the US Department of Energy. The research program at Marcell Experimental Forest is managed by the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station.

In some years percent cover was recorded more than one time per season. In all years percent cover was recorded in riffle habitats and in some (early) years percent cover was recorded for pool habitats. Moss point transects have been done on the Kuparuk since 1993. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton were collected in spring and late summer/fall at four stations representing the salinity gradient in the Parker River-Plum Island Sound estuary. Two size classes, greater than 335 micron and greater than 150 micron, were collected by net tows. Conductivity or salinty and temperature were recorded for each sample. Samples were concentrated to less than 250 mls and preserved in 70 percent EtOH. For taxonomy, sample splits were taken such that a minimum of 250 individuals were present, and counted under a dissecting microscope. Individuals were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, generally to species. Adult copepods were additionally characterized by sex. The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER has, since its inception in 1998, been working towards a predictive understanding of the long-term response of coupled land-estuary-ocean ecosystems to changes in three drivers: climate, sea level, and human activities. The Plum Island Estuary-LTER includes the coupled Parker, Rowley, and Ipswich River watersheds, estuarine areas including a shallow open sound, and extensive tidal marshes. PIE is connected to the Gulf of Maine in the Acadian biogeographic province, which is a cold water, macrotidal environment that is geographically and biologically distinct from coastal ecosystems to the south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Water column samples are collected along an estuarine salinity gradient as part of our monitoring surveys of the Parker River estuary each spring and late summer (typically high vs low freshwater input). Samples are filtered, and stored frozen for later pigment analyses by HPLC. Pigment data are then analyzed by CHEMTAX, calibrated to a matrix of pigment ratios based on taxonomy and enumeration of selected subsamples by microspcopy. Data are presented in terms of chlorophyll a concentrations partitionaed among the major phytoplankton groups as determined by CHEMTAX. For 2003-2006, sampling stations along the Plum Island Sound-Parker River were at fixed geographic locations at specific "Bends" in the river. In 2008, we began sampling the water column in salinity space rather than at specific geographic locations along the river. This sampling approach was adopted in order to follow particular water masses in this macrotidal estuary. In practical terms, it means that sampling locations, or stations, are not static. Therefore, we have mapped the 11 sampling locations (latitude and longitude are logged at each station) from each transect along the mainstem of the estuary, so each station may be placed along the river (to the nearest 0.5km) as well as in salinity space. We have also used the km marker to assign the sampling locations from each survey to one of four bounding boxes : the Sound (Plum Island Sound; EST-PR-SoundBND) which encompasses approximatly the first 9

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Watershed 3 soil moisture transect, 2007

Soil moisture was measured along a slope transect in Watershed 3 as part of a study examining hydrologic connectivity between hillslopes and the stream. Soil moisture sensors were located nearby shallow groundwater wells (available from https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/210b60a3d2f5ee2bb2635ee2fb33b637) along a topographically defined landform sequence (footslope–backslope– shoulder) in a sub-catchment of Watershed 3. The study was part of Joel Detty's M.S. thesis. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

RIV02 Plant transect data for the N2B experiment at Konza Prairie

Woody plant expansion is well-known to alter plant community composition, often including a decrease in plant biodiversity, such as species richness. This dataset was used to determine if plant communities are able to “bounce back” after repeated woody plant removal, returning to plant community more similar to tallgrass prairie without woody plant encroachment. Woody plant encroachment can affect plant communities in two key ways: increasing competition for light and limiting grassland propagules (if woody encroachment is widespread). Therefore, we also included a treatment in the riparian removal where seeds of native prairie plants were added to reduce propagule limitation. This data suggests that despite repeated tree removal, the plant community has not returned to a grassland state. Instead, shrubs and herbaceous woodland plants are dominant. Adding grassland propagules had no discernable impact.

Size-fractionated net primary productivity (NPP) estimates based on 13C uptake during cruises along the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect, ongoing since 2019

This dataset consists of primary production measurements based on uptake of carbon-13 added as 13C-bicarbonate during 24-h deckboard incubations of seawater. Sampling occurred on cruises along the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect during summer, fall, and winter, starting in summer 2019. Net primary production (NPP) was determined from particulate organic carbon (POC) content and associated stable isotope enrichment. Three data tables are included: 1. Depth-specific primary productivity based on fractional light levels of the surface irradiance with reference to the profile of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). 2. Integrated primary productivity. 3. Natural abundance POC. The tables derive from the raw data included as other entities.

These data represent the abundance, biovolume, and biomass of prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton and nanoplankton sampled continuously underway during Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. Samples were obtained with an Attune NxT Flow Cytometer sampling at approximately 2-min intervals from the underway science seawater. Cells were identified and enumerated from the flow cytometry data files based on their scattering, phycoerythrin (575 nm) and chlorophyll (680 nm) fluorescence signals.

Event logs from Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017

This package provides a concatenated table of events recorded on seasonal Transect cruises for Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) and other opportunistic cruises within the transect region. Events were recorded onboard with Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) event logger (elog) software. Event listings include date, time, ship's position, instrument, and action for over the side operations, underway data collection, and other miscellaneous events during the cruise. The event log is used post-cruise in physical sample cataloging and data integration. Cruises are seasonal and include NES-LTER dedicated voyages, spring and fall cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), and additional opportunistic cruises.

Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Sample collection is paired with particulate organic carbon at surface, subsurface chlorophyll max, and sometimes a third depth. Samples are filtered directly from the CTD rosette and acidified in the field, then analyzed using a Shimadzu TOC-LCPH total organic carbon analyzer coupled to a TNM-L analyzer for total nitrogen. Zooplankton sample inventory for Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

This dataset provides an inventory of physical samples collected from zooplankton bongo and/or ring net tows conducted during the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. The NES-LTER transect, located south of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, comprises standard stations L1-L11 and extends 150 km offshore. Dedicated NES-LTER cruises target all four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Samples are collected via oblique tows with a 61-cm bongo net fitted with 150- and 335-micron mesh nets, as well as a ring net with a 20-micron mesh net. During earlier spring and fall cruises along the NES-LTER Transect, in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative, samples were collected through vertical tows using a ring net with a 150-micron mesh. Samples collected are distributed among various laboratories for DNA metabarcoding, stable isotopes analysis, and morphological identification.

Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) from Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017

Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen are measured from discrete bottle samples collected during CTD-rosette casts on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017). Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were filtered and collected on combusted glass fiber filters, pelletized using ultra clean tin disks, and combusted using a Flash EA1112 CHN analyzer to calculate concentrations of particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen in micromoles per liter. Values are also reported as concentrations in micrograms per liter and carbon to nitrogen molar ratio.

These data represent the abundance, biovolume, and biomass of prokaryotic phytoplankton, eukaryotic pico- and nano- phytoplankton, and heterotrophic bacteria from discrete flow cytometry samples collected during the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. Samples were collected and preserved from the water column at multiple depths using Niskin bottles on a CTD rosette system along the NES-LTER transect, and analyzed post cruise. Cells were identified and enumerated from the flow cytometry data files based on their scattering, SYBR (525 nm), phycoerythrin (575 nm) and chlorophyll (680 nm) fluorescence signals. Gating was completed manually in the Attune NXT software interface.

Dissolved inorganic nutrients from NES-LTER Transect cruises, including 4 macro-nutrients from water column bottle samples, ongoing since 2017

Dissolved inorganic nutrients are measured from water column bottle samples taken on NES-LTER Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017) and include nitrate + nitrite, ammonium, silicate, and phosphate. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were filtered, frozen, then processed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Nutrient Analytical Facility. Each sample may have up to 2 replicates, indicated by a or b in the data table. These macro-nutrients are analyzed in seawater using a colorimetric assay in which light absorbance is measured versus known standards, and final concentrations are calculated in micromole per liter. Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates from NES-LTER transect cruises, ongoing since 2018.

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were measured from incubation experiments using the dilution method in the framework of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research project. The data set includes plankton population dynamics rates obtained during 12 cruises from winter 2018 (EN608) to summer 2022 (EN687) along a north/south transect from Martha’s Vineyard to the shelf-break. Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were measured for the total phytoplankton community (chl-a concentrations) and for size fractions (chl-a size fractionation) less than and greater than 10 µm. Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates, the first trophic interaction between primary producers and higher trophic levels, are essential parameters to assess the cycling and export of carbon in the ocean and to better understand marine food webs.

Oxygen-argon dissolved gas ratios using Equilibrator Inlet Mass Spectrometry (EIMS) and triple oxygen isotopes (TOI) from NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

In order to calculate net community production (NCP) rates on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) transect cruises, gas tracer data were collected with a continuous at-sea mass spectrometer. The ratio of O2/Ar, measured continuously from underway water, yields 8,000-15,000 rates of NCP per cruise. Discrete water samples (50 to 150 per cruise) were collected for triple oxygen isotope (TOI) analysis to estimate gross primary production (GPP) rates and ratios of NCP/GPP. Along-shelf (upstream-downstream) transects were conducted in addition to the main across-shelf transect. This data package provides two types of data tables for NES-LTER transect cruises beginning in 2018: a high-frequency continuous Equilibration Inlet Mass Spectrometer (EIMS) table, provided by year, and a low-frequency discrete triple oxygen isotope (TOI) table with all years combined. Rates calculated from these measurements are provided as separate packages, per year, in the EDI repository.
