Plant community responses to functional group and species removals along biodiversity experiment vegetation transects at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1997-2002

This dataset contains vegetative cover data of plots that have had various plant functional groups or species experimentally removed at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. This data was collected with the objective to distinguish the differential effects of plant community biomass, functional groups, and biodiversity within functional groups on ecosystem and plant community function. To make these distinctions, treatments were established by the selective removal of plant species or functional groups within experimental plots. There are eight treatments: control (C, no removals); four functional group removal treatments (PG, perennial grass removed; S, shrubs removed; SSh, subshrubs removed; Succ, succulents removed), and three species richness manipulation treatments. Richness manipulations included a simplified treatment (Simp), where only the single most abundant species of each growth form is preserved and all other species in the growth form are removed, a reduced‐Larrea treatment (rL), where the Larrea is assumed to be the dominant and is removed while minority components remain, and a reduced-Prosopsis treatment (rP), where Prosopis rather than Larrea is removed as the shrub dominant. Following treatments, vegetative data was collected by sampling each plot along three transects twice a year (Spring and Fall) for 5 years from 1997-2002 (no data collected in 1998). This data set consists of the date of collection, plot number, treatment type, transect number, quadrat number, species codes, two diameters, height, condition, count, record IDs, and error codes. Cold air drainage transect studies at the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2002 to Present

Temperature data are being collected to investigate the effects of elevation and local topographic position on the patterns of cold air drainage and pooling in the HJ Andrews Forest, and how they vary with synoptic weather patterns. The main focus of the study is cold air drainage in the Lookout Creek area, but others sites have been added to sample temperature signatures at other locations of the forest with topographic positions that need to be better understood. Here, quality controlled 15-minute raw data and aggregated daily minimum and maximum temperatures are available from several stations along 4 separate transects or clusters with some additional single sensors also included. Several of the quality flags indicate that the data failed the test and should not be used in analysis.

Elevation and soil salinity transects at Airport Marsh and Old Beach Road on Sapelo Island, Georgia in 2001

To examine the relationship between elevation and soil characteristics, I sampled two sites on Sapelo Island (Old Beach Road and Airport Marsh) in July of 2001. At each site, I collected 160 soil samples across a transect from the high to the low marsh, and surveyed the relative elevation of each sample location with a theodolite. I determined soil water content gravimetrically, soil organic content by ashing samples, and soil salinity by rehydrating dried soils, adding deionized water, measuring the salinity of the supernatant, and back calculating to the original soil water content.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This file contains the consolidated data for percent cover of dominant bryophytes and other easily identifiable macro-algae in the experimental reaches of the Kuparuk River beginning in 1993 and updated annually. In some years percent cover was recorded more than one time per season. In all years percent cover was recorded in riffle habitats and in some (early) years percent cover was recorded for pool habitats. Moss point transects have been done on the Kuparuk since 1993. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton were collected in spring and late summer/fall at four stations representing the salinity gradient in the Parker River-Plum Island Sound estuary. Two size classes, greater than 335 micron and greater than 150 micron, were collected by net tows. Conductivity or salinty and temperature were recorded for each sample. Samples were concentrated to less than 250 mls and preserved in 70 percent EtOH. For taxonomy, sample splits were taken such that a minimum of 250 individuals were present, and counted under a dissecting microscope. Individuals were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, generally to species. Adult copepods were additionally characterized by sex. The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER has, since its inception in 1998, been working towards a predictive understanding of the long-term response of coupled land-estuary-ocean ecosystems to changes in three drivers: climate, sea level, and human activities. The Plum Island Estuary-LTER includes the coupled Parker, Rowley, and Ipswich River watersheds, estuarine areas including a shallow open sound, and extensive tidal marshes. PIE is connected to the Gulf of Maine in the Acadian biogeographic province, which is a cold water, macrotidal environment that is geographically and biologically distinct from coastal ecosystems to the south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Water column samples are collected along an estuarine salinity gradient as part of our monitoring surveys of the Parker River estuary each spring and late summer (typically high vs low freshwater input). Samples are filtered, and stored frozen for later pigment analyses by HPLC. Pigment data are then analyzed by CHEMTAX, calibrated to a matrix of pigment ratios based on taxonomy and enumeration of selected subsamples by microspcopy. Data are presented in terms of chlorophyll a concentrations partitionaed among the major phytoplankton groups as determined by CHEMTAX. For 2003-2006, sampling stations along the Plum Island Sound-Parker River were at fixed geographic locations at specific "Bends" in the river. In 2008, we began sampling the water column in salinity space rather than at specific geographic locations along the river. This sampling approach was adopted in order to follow particular water masses in this macrotidal estuary. In practical terms, it means that sampling locations, or stations, are not static. Therefore, we have mapped the 11 sampling locations (latitude and longitude are logged at each station) from each transect along the mainstem of the estuary, so each station may be placed along the river (to the nearest 0.5km) as well as in salinity space. We have also used the km marker to assign the sampling locations from each survey to one of four bounding boxes : the Sound (Plum Island Sound; EST-PR-SoundBND) which encompasses approximatly the first 9.5 km or the transect, with Okm at the mouth of the sound; the Lower Parker River (EST-PR-LowerParkerBND) , ~9.5 - 1

Occurrence of animals along five transects at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1989-1994

This dataset contains data on the occurrence of rabbits, birds, and lizards observed along the Jornada Basin LTER (II) animal transects in southern New Mexico, USA. Five, 1 km transects were established, each in a different vegetation zone, near the current NPP study locations C-CALI, G-IBPE, M-NORT, P-COLL, and T-EAST. An observer walked each transect once every two weeks from early 1989 through 1994 recording animals observed along the transects. The data consists of species names, numbers of individuals, and perpendicular distances observed from transects, as well as weather and other context observations. Observation history and species codes are described in additional files. This study is complete.

Biomass of harvested annual and perrenial forbs and grasses along fertilized and unfertilized ecosystem transects at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1989

This data package contains biomass data for annual or perennial grasses and forbs harvested from quadrats along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The Treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Along each transect, 91 stations, each with a plant intercept line, are spaced at 30 meter intervals. Each plant intercept line is perpendicular to the transect and is 30 meters in length broken into 5-meter segments. The included dataset includes biomass data for grasses and forbs clipped from 1 square meter quadrats directly downslope from some, but not all, of these segments. The harvest measurements occurred in September 1989. Data consists of the date, transect, station number, quad, JRN and USDA Plants species codes, species binomial, habit, form, and biomass. This study is complete.

This data package contains nitrogen mineralization data from soils collected along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The Treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Along each transect, 91 stations, each with a plant intercept line, are spaced at 30 meter intervals. For this dataset, 60 soil samples (total) were collected along the control and fertilized treatment transects and mixed with potassium chloride solution (KCl) on Nov 27, 1989, then filter extracted the following day. The dataset contains a soil moisture correction factor, sample weights, total inorganic nitrogen (NO3+NO2-N), and nitrogen in ammonium (NH4-N) for Week F (field) of nitrogen mineralization potentials. The soil mineralization data complements the biomass harvest measurements that occurred in September 1989 (dataset knb-lter-jrn.210015001). This study is complete.

CBP01 Variable distance line-transect sampling of bird population numbers in different habitats on Konza Prairie

Records of bird species based on line transect sampling, giving perpendicular distance of sighting from the transect line on 16 separate transects. Bird surveys were conducted 2-4 times per year in January, April, June, and October for a 29-year period from 1981 to 2009. Transects were designed to determine bird communities and population numbers associated with tallgrass prairie habitats with different experimental treatments (fire frequency, grazed by bison vs. ungrazed), riparian habitats on forest edge, and gallery forests dominated by oak woodland.

WAT01 Konza Prairie long-term irrigation transect study

In 1991, an irrigation transect experiment was established near the Konza Prairie HQ to assess the effects of supplemental water on ecological processes in tallgrass prairie. The site is burned annually in the spring. The transect spans upland, hillside and lowland topographic positions with irrigation and sampling points (12) located at 10 m intervals. Adjacent control transects are marked on both sides of the irrigation transect. Irrigation is scheduled according to estimates of actual evapotranspiration and measures of plant water status. In 1992, an additional 4 irrigation sprinklers were added to the transect (2 at each end). In 1993, a second line of sprinklers and control plots was added (#16-31). At the time of peak aboveground biomass (late August to October), six 0.1 m2 quadrats are harvested at each of the 30 sites (no #9 due to rock outcrop) for the irrigated and control/non-irrigated lines. Biomass is separated into live grass, forb and woody. As of 2006, c.dead is no longer separated from live grass. Vegetative species composition was initially measured in 1991 at each site, and continues to be measured at midseason by using a modified Daubenmire canopy coverage technique in a 10 m2 circular plot. At approximately 10 day intervals, predawn and midday plant water potentials are measured in Andropogon gerardii at each site in both irrigated and control transects. Since 1992, reproductive effort of the dominant grasses Andropogon gerardii (ANGE), Sorghastrum nutans (SONU), Schizachyrium scoparius (ANSC) has been assessed in irrigated and control transects by measuring heights (n=9) and densities (n=4) of flowering stalks. In 1993, soil moisture measurements at 15 and 30 cm depths were begun with a Time Domain Reflectometry system. Zooplankton abundance from net tows on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

This data package provides abundance data for zooplankton collected during seasonal transect cruises conducted as part of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) program, ongoing since 2018. Zooplankton are collected at standard NES-LTER transect stations (L1–L11) and the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) via oblique tows, using a 61-cm Bongo net with two mesh sizes (335 µm and 150 µm). The transect extends southward from near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, reaching approximately 150 km offshore along longitude 70 deg 53 min W, covering the continental shelf from nearshore to the shelf break, with sampling depths between 20 and 200 meters. Only the 335-µm mesh data is included here, as samples from this net are preserved on board and shipped to Morski Instytut Rybacki in Szczecin, Poland, where they are counted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Counts of taxa identified are provided by the NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center. Samples from the 150 um are preserved for other purposes and will be published as a separate data package. This second version of the data package includes staged and unstaged abundance data in volumetric (100 m³) and aerial (10 m²) units from the 335-µm net. Supplemental tables provide metadata for the cruises and stations.

PIE LTER water-column nutrient and particulate transects along the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, 1994 - 2019.

Water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments and light extinction coefficients, was determined from bi-annual nutrient transects along the Plum Island Sound estuary from the Parker River Dam to the mouth of the sound. Grab samples were taken at 11 sites along a 24 km transect from the mouth of the estuary to as near the dam at the head of the estuary as poosible. These samples have generally been collected in Spring and Fall and are done in conjunction with metabolism transects measuring dissolved oxygen levels. The Spring and Fall transects correspond to the high-flow, pre-growth season and the low-flow, post-growth season, respectively.
