Data from: Personality predicts foraging site fidelity and trip repeatability in a marine predator

1. Animal populations are often comprised of both foraging specialists and generalists. For instance, some individuals show higher foraging site fidelity (spatial specialisation) than others. Such individual differences in degree of specialisation can persist over timescales of months or even years in long-lived animals, but the mechanisms leading to these different individual strategies are not fully understood. 2. There is accumulating evidence that individual variation in foraging behaviour is shaped by animal personality traits, such as boldness. Despite this, the potential for boldness to drive differences in the degree of specialisation is unknown. 3. In this study, we used novel object tests to measure boldness in black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) breeding at four colonies in Svalbard, and deployed GPS loggers to examine their at-sea foraging behaviour. We estimated the repeatability of foraging trips, and used a hidden Markov model to identify locations of foraging sites in order to quantify individual foraging site fidelity. 4. Across the breeding season, bolder birds were more repeatable than shy individuals in the distance and range of their foraging trips, and during the incubation period (but not chick rearing), bolder individuals were more site faithful. Birds exhibited these differences while showing high spatial similarity in foraging areas, indicating that site selection was not driven by personality-dependent spatial partitioning. 5. We instead suggest that a relationship between boldness and site fidelity may be driven by differences in behavioural flexibility between bold and shy individuals. Together, these results provide a potential mechanism by which widely reported individual differences in foraging specialisation may emerge.

Black-tailed Gull GPS foraging trip data and acceleration raw data

Areas at which seabirds forage intensively can be discriminated by tracking the individuals' at-sea movements. However, such tracking data may not accurately reflect the birds' exact foraging locations. In addition to tracking data, gathering information on the dynamic body acceleration of individual birds may refine inferences on their foraging activity. Our aim was to classify the foraging behaviors of surface-feeding seabirds using data on their body acceleration and use this signal to discriminate areas where they forage intensively. Accordingly, we recorded the foraging movements and body acceleration data from seven and ten black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) in 2017 and 2018, respectively, using GPS loggers and accelerometers. By referring to video footage of flying and foraging individuals, we were able to classify flying (flapping flight, gliding, and hovering), foraging (surface plunging, hop plunging, and swimming), and maintenance (drifting, preening, etc.) behaviors using the speed, body angle, and cycle and amplitude of body acceleration of the birds. Foraging areas determined from acceleration data corresponded roughly with sections of low speed and area-restricted searching (ARS) identified from the GPS tracks. However, this study suggests that the occurrence of foraging behaviors may be overestimated based on low-speed trip sections, because birds may exhibit long periods of reduced movement devoted to maintenance. Opposite, the ARS-based approach may underestimate foraging behaviors since birds can forage without conducting an ARS. Therefore, our results show that the combined use of accelerometers and GPS tracking helps to adequately determine the important foraging areas of black-tailed gulls. Our approach may contribute to better discriminate ecologically or biologically significant areas in marine environments.

Source Data for Crowdsourcing Bridge Dynamic Monitoring with Smartphone Vehicle Trips

<p>This data accompanies the study "Crowdsourcing Bridge Dynamic Monitoring with Smartphone Vehicle Trips" published in (Nature) Communications Engineering. This paper focuses on using large and inexpsensive datasets for obtaining information on the dynamics of bridges. In this study, data is collected by smartphones in moving vehicles as the cross over a bridge, in three distinct applications. Smartphone data was collected in controlled field experiments and uncontrolled Uber rides on a long-span suspension bridge in the USA (The Golden Gate Bridge) and an analytical method was developed to accurately recover modal properties. The method was also successfully applied to partially-controlled crowdsourced data collected on a short-span highway bridge in Italy. The results suggest that larve and inexpensive datasets collected by smartphones could play a role in monitoring the health of existing transportation infrastructure.</p> <p>The data provided includes the source data for the figures in the publication as well as the "controlled data" referenced in the study.</p>

A sighting was, however, reported from Bali Barat National Park, in a birdwatching trip report. Given the live-animal trade of this species on Java, further records are needed to confirm whether or not there is a native population of the genus on Bali. If there is, biogeographic considerations suggest it would be most closely related to the Javan population and quite probably conspecific. in Tragulidae
