Data from: Evaluating the potential for bird-habitat models to support biodiversity-friendly urban planning

<ol> <li>Urban expansion poses a major threat to wildlife populations. Biodiversity-friendly urban landscapes could deliver benefits for both wildlife and people, by incorporating conservation and ecosystem services objectives. Well-designed urban developments could also soften the ecological impacts of urbanisation. However, delivering urban landscapes that integrate biodiversity requirements effectively remains challenging.</li> <li>Ecological models, designed to predict wildlife population responses to alternative urban designs, could prove effective in supporting the creation of biodiversity-friendly urban landscapes. Here, we combine national-scale bird abundance data with high resolution, spatially explicit habitat data to characterise relationships between bird densities and urban landscape form in Britain. From these analyses and cross-validation, we evaluate the potential for well-parameterised, species-specific models to be used to predict bird densities in novel or modified urban areas.</li> <li>Our analyses indicate that responses of bird abundance to urban habitat are species-specific and complex, with few variables consistently affecting a large proportion of species. However, contiguous areas of greenspace within urban sites are preferential for accommodating breeding birds, compared to a more fragmented arrangement of multiple, small greenspace patches. In combination, the bird-habitat relationships identified could successfully predict observed variation in abundance for most bird species considered.</li> <li>Further evaluation of habitat descriptor variables, spatial scales of species' habitat use and analytical modelling approaches may be needed to improve the predictive ability of bird-habitat models for certain species, particularly waterbirds and those observed less frequently in urban areas.</li> <li> <i>Synthesis and applications.</i> We modelled breeding bird abundance in built-up areas with respect to the characteristics and contexts of urban environments. While most variables were important for multiple species, responses overall were species-specific, so simple assemblage metrics, like diversity, will not describe the variation in bird communities well. However, the results illustrate the potential of an evidence-based, spatially explicit evaluation of urban development impacts on biodiversity, by predicting the consequences for bird numbers. Subject to verification of predictive ability, practitioners can apply the models to compare, for example, land-sparing and sharing within developments, or to quantify the biodiversity requirements for effective offsetting. This would be facilitated by incorporation into an online tool allowing user-determined input scenarios.</li> </ol>

Selecting the Most Feasible Construction Phasing Plans for Urban Highway Rehabilitation Projects

<p>Despite the abundance of research that has aimed to understand the effects of highway work zones, very little definitive<br> information is available concerning the determination of work zone length (WZL). Quantitative studies that holistically<br> model WZL are very rare. To fill this gap, this study identifies critical factors affecting WZL and develops decision<br> support models that determine the optimal WZL in a balanced tradeoff between motorists&rsquo; inconvenience due to traffic<br> disruption and their opportunity cost. A high-confidence dataset was created by conducting a series of scheduling and<br> traffic simulations and analyses. The results revealed that traffic loading and work zone duration are critical factors,<br> with traffic loading at approximately 41,000 vehicles-per-day being an important benchmarking point. Based on these<br> findings, a decision support model was developed to determine the most feasible WZL. As the first of its kind, this<br> study will help state transportation agencies devise sounder construction phasing plans by providing a point of<br> reference when establishing WZL in a viable way to minimize traffic disruption during construction.</p>

Sketch planning tool for sustainable and resilient urban goods distribution

<p>The urban goods distribution system is a critical component of modern society. However, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in this system, as it struggled to cope with an unforeseen surge in demand. This crisis highlighted the urgent necessity of developing a resilient and sustainable urban goods distribution system capable of efficiently recovering from high-severity disruptions. To address this challenge, our research team previously developed a novel analytical model, the Robustness, Redundancy, Resourcefulness, and Rapidity - Last-Mile Distribution - Resilience Triangle (R4-LMD-RT) framework. In line with the previous work, this work aims to create a sketch-planning tool tailored for local jurisdictions, based on the R4-LMD-RT model. This tool assists in the strategic planning of urban goods distribution systems, identifying land use requirements and proposing sustainable and resilient strategies, such as urban consolidation, micro-hubs, alternative delivery points, and zero-emission vehicles. As part of a case study, the authors validate the effectiveness of this planning tool by applying it to the city of Los Angeles for a COVID-19-like disruption. The outcome of this research paves the way for more sustainable and resilient urban goods distribution systems in the post-pandemic world.</p>

Urban planning effectiveness and citizen satisfaction. A systematic literature review.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> The population is increasingly demanding a better quality of life in their territories, which requires better urban planning. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of urban planning implemented by local governments on citizen satisfaction.</p> <p><strong>Method:</strong> A systematic literature review was conducted exploring the evolution of the state of the art databases in Scopus, WOS and Dimensions, involving a relevant selection of empirical studies on the effectiveness of urban planning on citizen satisfaction, using quality criteria and the application of the Prism diagram.</p> <p>Results: The findings in the various empirical contributions find converging in three main blocks the contributions related to: (i) Urban planning as a catalyst for the impact of citizen satisfaction, given that using the planning tool will lead to the development of local policies based on the Neoliberalism approach for smart urban development; (ii) Theoretical contributions for urban planning that contextualises a modernist planning based on a multidimensional aspect to address quality of life for modern well-being and (iii) Smart planning for citizen satisfaction for the design and implementation of public governance reforms aimed at optimising urban planning management at the local level for smart urban city development.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> There is strong theoretical and empirical support that is closely linked to sustainable development, happiness, public space, urban growth, urban areas, satisfied customers and urban residents.
