Experimental vacancies do not induce settlement despite habitat saturation in a cooperative breeder
<p><span>The paradox of cooperative breeding whereby individuals assist others instead of reproducing independently is generally explained through ecological constraints, but experimental evidence is scant. Here we performed the crucial test of the role of habitat saturation through experimental creation of vacancies and find that despite abundant presence of potential mates, subordinates are reluctant to disperse into suitable vacant habitat where conspecifics are absent. We argue that sudden disappearance of multiple group members might indicate a heightened risk of predation. Thereby the results of this study are consistent with the 'perceptual trap' hypothesis: the avoidance of habitats because cues do not accurately reflect their quality. Interestingly, this hypothesis can also explain previous findings, which were widely interpreted as evidence for ecological constraints as a driver of cooperative breeding. Our results can have considerable implications for conservation as it means that opportunities for colonization might go unexploited.</span></p>

Spectroscopic investigations of negatively charged tin-vacancy centres in diamond
<p>Spectroscopic investigations of negatively charged tin-vacancy centres in diamond<br> The recently discovered negatively charged tin-vacancy centre in diamond is a promising candidate for applications in quantum information processing (QIP). We here present a detailed spectroscopic study encompassing single photon emission and polarisation properties, the temperature dependence of emission spectra as well as a detailed analysis of the phonon sideband and Debye–Waller factor. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy we probe an energetically higher lying excited state and prove fully lifetime limited linewidths of single emitters at cryogenic temperatures. For these emitters we also investigate the stability of the charge state under resonant excitation. These results provide a detailed insight into the spectroscopic properties of the SnV− centre and lay the foundation for further studies regarding its suitability in QIP.</p>

Factors influencing halide vacancy transport in perovskite solar cells
<p>Python code will generate high grid structures in CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) and a migration path. It will collect the data from a customized number of grids and calculate the migration barrier. Various factors, such as defect charge states or pressure, can be applied to high grid structures to consider device-like conditions. Examples of CsPbI3 high grid structures are named by {#of grids}_{grid point x}_{grid point y}.</p>

Data from: Sociodemographic factors modulate the spatial response of brown bears to vacancies created by hunting
1.There is a growing recognition of the importance of indirect effects from hunting on wildlife populations, e.g., social and behavioral changes due to harvest, which occur after the initial offtake. Nonetheless, little is known about how the removal of members of a population influences the spatial configuration of the survivors. 2.We studied how surviving brown bears (Ursus arctos) used former home ranges that had belonged to casualties of the annual bear hunting season in southcentral Sweden (2007-2015). We used resource selection functions to explore the effects of the casualty's and survivor's sex, age, and their pairwise genetic relatedness, population density, and hunting intensity on survivors' spatial responses to vacated home ranges. 3.We tested the competitive release hypothesis, whereby survivors that increase their use of a killed bear's home range are presumed to have been released from intraspecific competition. We found strong support for this hypothesis, as survivors of the same sex as the casualty consistently increased their use of its vacant home range. Patterns were less pronounced or absent when the survivor and casualty were of opposite sex. 4.Genetic relatedness between the survivor and the casualty emerged as the most important factor explaining increased use of vacated male home ranges by males, with a stronger response from survivors of lower relatedness. Relatedness was also important for females, but it did not influence use following removal; female survivors used home ranges of higher related female casualties more, both before and after death. Spatial responses by survivors were further influenced by bear age, population density, and hunting intensity. 5.We have showed that survivors exhibit a spatial response to vacated home ranges caused by hunting casualties, even in non-territorial species such as the brown bear. This spatial reorganization can have unintended consequences for population dynamics and interfere with management goals. Altogether, our results underscore the need to better understand the short- and long-term indirect effects of hunting on animal social structure and their resulting distribution in space.

Binary Approach to Ternary Cluster Expansions: NO–O–Vacancy System on Pt(111)
<p>Cluster expansions (CEs) provide an exact framework for representing the configurational energy of interacting adsorbates at a surface. Coupled with Monte Carlo methods, they can be used to predict both equilibrium and dynamic processes at surfaces. In this work, we propose a three-binary-to-single-ternary (TBST) fitting procedure, in which a ternary CE is approximated as a linear combination of the three binary CEs (O–vac, NO–vac, and NO–O) obtained by fitting to the three binary legs. We first construct a full ternary CE by fitting to a database of density functional theory (DFT) computed energies of configurations across a full range of adsorbate configurations and then construct a second ternary using the TBST approach. We compare two approaches for the NO–O–vacancy system on the (111) surface of Pt, a system of relevance to the catalytic oxidation of NO. We find that the TBST model matches the ternary CE to within 0.018 eV/site across a wide range of configurations. Further, surface coverages and NO oxidation rates extracted from Monte Carlo simulations show that the two models are qualitatively consistent over the range of conditions of practical interest.</p>
