The neural correlates of embodied L2 learning. Does embodied L2 verb learning affect representation and retention?

<p>We investigated how naturalistic actions in a highly immersive, multimodal, interactive 3D virtual reality (VR) environment may enhance word encoding by recording EEG in a pre/post-test learning paradigm. While behavior data has shown that coupling word encoding with gestures congruent with word meaning enhances learning, the neural underpinnings of this effect have yet to be elucidated. We coupled EEG recording with VR to examine whether "embodied learning" improves learning and creates linguistic representations that produce greater motor resonance. Participants learned action verbs in an L2 in two different conditions: Specific action (observing and performing congruent actions on virtual objects) and Pointing (observing actions and pointing to virtual objects). Pre and post-training participants performed a Match-mismatch task as we measured EEG (variation in the N400 response as a function of match between observed actions and auditory verbs) and a Passive listening task while we measured motor activation (mu (8-13 Hz) and beta band (13-30Hz) desynchronization during auditory verb processing) during verb processing. Contrary to our expectations, post-training results revealed neither semantic nor motor effects in either group when considered independently of&nbsp;learning success. Behavioral results showed both groups learned the verbs, but also a great deal of variability in learning success. When considering performance, Low performance learners showed no semantic effect and High performance learners exhibited an N400 effect for Mismatch vs Match trails post-training, independent of the type of learning. Taken as a whole, our results suggest that embodied processes can play an important role in L2 learning.</p>

Data sets of the analysis of 1sg and 2sg subject expression with the verbs 'creer' and 'saber' in a corpus of spoken Spanish

<p>These are the two data sets used for the quantitative analysis in the paper &quot;&ldquo;Perspectival factors and <em>pro</em>-drop &ndash; A corpus study of speaker/addressee pronouns with <em>creer </em>&lsquo;think/believe&rsquo; and <em>saber </em>&lsquo;know&rsquo; in spoken Spanish&rdquo; (Peter Herbeck;<em> to appear </em>in <em>Glossa &ndash; a journal of general linguistics</em>). It contains the&nbsp;values of the annotation of null and overt speaker/addressee pronouns in the Madrid and Alcal&aacute; samples of the corpus PRESEEA (2014-). The first data set was used for the quantitative analysis of subject expression (null/overt) with the verbs <em>creer&nbsp;</em>and <em>saber&nbsp;</em>according to person (1sg vs. 2sg) and polarity (negative vs. positive verb forms). The second data set was used for the analysis of 1sg subject expression according to the complement type of <em>creer&nbsp;</em>and <em>saber</em>.</p>

The Grammatical Nature of Sino-Vietnamese "Verb-Object Compounds"

<p>This study investigates the grammatical nature of Sino-Vietnamese words borrowed from &ldquo;verb-object compounds&rdquo;. I selected 47 verb-object compounds borrowed into Vietnamese as target and investigated whether they maintain their dual identities (i.e., word and phrase) as in Chinese. The results show that functional words cannot be inserted between the constituents of the target words with one exception, and that a number of target words can be followed by an object. Based on the results, I argue that Sino-Vietnamese &ldquo;verb-object compounds&rdquo; have almost lost their phrasal identity and that some items have been reinterpreted as transitive verbs.</p>

Syllable Structure and Morphemicity in Tone Patterns on Verbs in Kanise Khumi

<p>In the Khomic group within Kuki-Chin, there have been conflicting representations of whether all morphemes bear tone, or whether tonelessness is related to syllable type. While verb roots in these languages can be monosyllabic or sesquisyllabic, they are always bound by affixes and clitics. This study offers a fine-grained analysis of tonal variation on various syllable types and morphemes. I examine verbs in Kanise Khumi using archived wordlist data. In addition to pitch specification in various contexts, I focus on the durability of voice quality cues that are associated with Kanise tones.</p>
