Data from: Vessel noise levels drive behavioural responses of humpback whales with implications for whale-watching

<p><span>Disturbance from whale-watching can cause significant behavioural changes with fitness consequences for targeted whale populations. However, the sensory stimuli triggering these responses are unknown, preventing effective mitigation. Here, we test the hypothesis that vessel noise level is a driver of disturbance, using humpback whales (<i>Megaptera novaeangliae</i>) as a model species. We conducted controlled exposure experiments (<i>n</i>= 42) on resting mother-calf pairs on a resting ground off Australia, by simulating whale-watch scenarios with a research vessel (range 100 m, speed 1.5 knts) playing back vessel noise at control/low (124/148 dB), medium (160 dB) or high (172 dB) LF-weighted source levels (re 1 μPa RMS@1m). Compared to<i> </i>control/low treatments,<i> </i>during<i> </i>high noise playbacks the mother's proportion of time resting decreased by 30%, respiration rate doubled and swim speed increased by 37%. We therefore conclude that vessel noise is an adequate driver of behavioural disturbance in whales and that regulations to mitigate the impact of whale-watching should include noise emission standards. </span></p>

Data from: Variation of xylem vessel diameters across a climate gradient: insight from a reciprocal transplant experiment with a widespread boreal tree

Xylem vessel diameters represent an important plant hydraulic trait to ensure sufficient water supply from the roots to the leaves. The ability to adjust the hydraulic pathway to environmental cues is key in order to satisfy transpirational demands and maximize growth and survival. We evaluated the variability of vessel diameters in trembling aspen in a reciprocal transplant experiment. We tested six provenances from three ecological regions of North America planted at four test sites in western Canada. All test sites were established at the same time with the same provenances arranged in a randomized complete block design. Vessel diameter showed a strong interaction of population and test site suggesting a high degree of phenotypic plasticity in this trait. Gaussian kernel density estimates support plastic as well as genetic contributions in vessel diameter control trending from bimodal distributions at the most northern test site towards unimodal distributions at the warmest and mildest test site. Furthermore, we used test site-specific climate data in form of a 2-year, 5-year and 10-year average of 21 directly and derived climatic variables and found that average site-specific vessel diameters correlated strongly with summer moisture availability. A previously found negative relationship with vessel diameter and tree height in central Alberta was also found at two other boreal test sites but reversed at a wetter and milder sub-boreal test site. In summary, vessel diameters were highly plastic in response to different environments and varied with summer moisture availability. The variability of vessel diameter and tree height correlations suggests that vessel diameter alone cannot serve as a reliable proxy for long-term growth performance beyond boreal environments. Instead, selecting aspen populations with a high degree of plasticity in this trait appears to be the safest option for assisted migration and seed transfer programmes under climate change.

Data from: Angiosperm wood structure: global patterns in vessel anatomy and their relationship to wood density and potential conductivity

Woody stems comprise a large biological carbon fraction and determine water transport between roots and leaves; their structure and function can influence both carbon and hydrological cycles. While angiosperm wood anatomy and density determine hydraulic conductivity and mechanical strength, little is known about interrelations across many species. We compiled a global dataset comprising two anatomical traits for 3005 woody angiosperms: mean vessel lumen area ( ) and number per unit area (N). From these, we calculated vessel lumen fraction (F = N) and size/number ratio (S = /N), a new vessel composition index. We examined extent to which F and S influenced potential sapwood specific stem conductivity (KS) and wood density (D; dry mass/fresh volume). F and S varied essentially independently across angiosperms. Variation in KS was driven primarily by S, and variation in D was virtually unrelated to F and S. Tissue density outside vessel lumens (DN) must predominantly influence D. High S should confer faster Ks but incur greater freeze-thaw embolism risk. F should also affect KS, and both F and DN should influence mechanical strength, capacitance, and construction costs. Improved theory and quantification are needed to better understand ecological costs and benefits of these three distinct dimensions.

Data from: Identifying fishing grounds from vessel tracks: model-based inference for small scale fisheries

Recent technological developments facilitate the collection of location data from fishing vessels at an increasing rate. The development of low-cost electronic systems allows tracking of small-scale fishing vessels, a sector of fishing fleets typically characterised by many, relatively small vessels. The imminent production of large spatial datasets for this previously data-poor sector, creates a challenge in terms of data analysis. Several methods have been used to infer the spatial distribution of fishing activities from positional data. Here, we compare five approaches using either vessel speed, or speed and turning angle, to infer fishing activity in the Scottish inshore fleet. We assess the performance of each approach using observational records of true vessel activity. Although results are similar across methods, a trip-based Gaussian mixture model provides the best overall performance and highest computational efficiency for our use-case, allowing accurate estimation of the spatial distribution of active fishing (97% of true area captured). When vessel movement data can be validated, we recommend assessing the performance of different methods. These results illustrate the feasibility of designing a monitoring system to efficiently generate information on fishing grounds, fishing intensity, or monitoring of compliance to regulations at a nationwide scale in near-real time.

Data from: Diosmin and its glycocalyx restorative and anti-inflammatory effects on injured blood vessels

<p>Endothelium, a crucial homeostatic organ, regulates vascular permeability and tone. Under physiological conditions, endothelial stimulation induces vasodilator endothelial nitric oxide (eNO) release and prevents adhesion molecule accessibility and leukocyte adhesion and migration into vessel walls. Endothelium dysfunction is a principal event in cardiovascular disorders, including atherosclerosis. Hence, current therapies focus on endothelium repair to prevent downstream cardiovascular events. However, minimal attention is given to the restoration of mechanotransducer endothelial glycocalyx (GCX), a negatively charged heterogeneous polysaccharide, which covers and protects endothelial cells. Endothelial GCX shedding plays a role in endothelial dysfunction, increasing vascular permeability and decreasing vessel tone. Diosmin, a flavone glycoside of diosmetin, downregulates adhesive molecule expression, decreases inflammation and capillary permeability, and upregulates eNO expression. Due to these pleiotropic effects of diosmin on the vasculature, a possible unidentified mechanism of action is through GCX restoration. Diosmin effect on GCX and endothelial function were assessed in a partial ligation left carotid artery (LCA) mouse model where the right carotid artery was the control for each mouse. Diosmin (50 mg/kg) was administered daily for 7 days, 48 hours after ligation. Within the ligated mice LCAs, diosmin treatment elevated the activated eNO synthase level, inhibited inflammatory cell uptake, decreased vessel wall thickness, increased vessel diameter, and increased GCX coverage of the vessel wall. ELISA showed a decrease in hyaluronan concentration in plasma samples of diosmin-treated mice, signifying reduced GCX shedding. In summary, diosmin supported endothelial GCX integrity, which preserved endothelial function by attenuating expression of inflammatory factors and restoring vascular tone.</p>

MarTREC Data Set for Report: Developing and Applying an Analysis Methodology to Identify Flow Generation Influences between Vessel and Truck Shipments

<p>Truck activity is logically connected to vessel activity at a port. In turn, vessel activity is also influenced by truck shipments. Although one might expect a direct and straightforward relation between these two types of shipments, that is rarely the case. For instance, many maritime containers carry consolidated cargos that have multiple and different final destinations. Also, different truck capacities, customs clearance and regulations play a critical role in determining the actual relation between these two types of shipments. This project aims at shedding light on the nuances of maritime and roadway flow relations by quantitatively analyzing the linkages between these two types of shipments.</p> <p>The study performed a statistical analysis to determine the probability distributions of vessel and truck activity, and then explore the correlation of each activity with the other. The analysis yielded coefficients that function as explanatory values for specific truck flows.</p> <p>The ultimate purpose of this study is to provide a clearer and quantitative understanding of the relationship between maritime and truck shipments, and by doing so, to provide tools to develop a system for managing trucks that maximizes efficiency for industry, while minimizing industry&rsquo;s negative impacts on a region.</p> <p>For this purpose, the study selected the Port Freeport as a case study.</p>
