Viscoelasticity modeling of clay minerals by dynamic viscoelasticity measurement and its implications for earthquake faulting

We conducted dynamic viscoelastic measurements on three clay minerals, kaolinite, illite and smectite with water. These concentrated (dense) suspension systems of clay minerals were investigated using a high-temperature and high-fluid-pressure rheometer to determine their viscoelastic properties, which help further the understanding of tectonic and non-tectonic phenomena in the shallow unconsolidated portion of the lithosphere. Our results suggested that the rheological properties resulting from the network structure of the clay mineral were temperature, pressure and peak shear strain rate dependent. In addition, it was observed during this study that the amount of change in the phase angle varied systematically with the type of clay mineral. This suggests that the viscoelastic behaviour of unconsolidated systems saturated with fluid varies with the type of clay minerals that compose it. (Abstract)

Thermal Response due to Crack Growth in Viscoelasticity

The study of thermal response in the crack tip due to crack growth is very important to study the material behavior. Actually, the thermal response in the crack tip is generated by the mechanical dissipation energy properties, e.g. the viscous energy dissipation. Therefore, we proposed the PFM for crack propagation in thermoviscoelasticity solids and demonstrated several numerical examples. Our present model is derived from the Francfort–Marigo energy with the Ambrosio–Tortorelli regularization, and thermal energy. Our study aims to investigate the thermal response in the material due to crack growth numerically using the proposed model. In the numerical method, since we need the mesh which has to be fine enough to capture the damage variable $z$, we apply the adaptive finite element method. Several interesting numerical examples are demonstrated, such as; Mode I crack propagation, Mixed Mode I+II crack propagation, and scalar Mode III crack propagation in the non-isothermal and adiabatic processes. Numerical experiments demonstrate the capability of the proposed model to capture the temperature increasing around crack tips which is consistent with the viewpoint of laboratory experiments in the literature.

Wide-range viscoelastic compression forces in microfluidics to probe cell-dependent nuclear structural and mechanobiological responses

The cell nucleus plays a critical role in mechanosensing and mechanotransduction processes, by adaptive changes of its envelope composition to external biophysical stimuli such as substrate rigidity and tensile forces. Current measurement approaches lack of precise control in stress application on nuclei, thus significantly impairing a complete mechanobiological study of cells. Here, we present a contactless microfluidic approach capable to exert a wide-range of viscoelastic compression forces (10-103 μN) -as an alternative to adhesion-related techniques- to induce cell-specific mechano-structural and biomolecular changes. We succeed in monitoring substantial nuclear modifications in Lamin A/C expression and coverage, diffusion processes of probing molecules, YAP shuttling, chromatin re-organization and cGAS pathway activation. As a result, high compression forces lead to a nuclear reinforcement (e.g. up to +20% in Lamin A/C coverage) or deconstruction (e.g. down to -45% in Lamin A/C coverage with a 30% reduction of chromatin condensation state parameter) up to cell death. We demonstrate how wide-range compression on suspended cells can be used as a tool to investigate nuclear mechanobiology and to define specific nuclear signatures for cell mechanical phenotyping.
