Data from: Visual attention and perception of road safety advertisements with different level of explicitness in Peruvian millennials and centennials
<p>In the face of the massiveness of content, social advertisements must explore the potential of other dimensions to improve their designs. This paper examines the effect of different levels of graphic explicitness on the attention and perception of road safety ads. An eye-tracking experiment was conducted to assess the visual attention of 60 young millennials and centennials on three ads with images of different levels of explicitness. Participants were agrouped into two groups where they watched two road safety ads with negative valence, but with different levels of explicitness in the second ad seen. For the image and text of each ad, metrics of number of fixations, time to first fixation and total fixation time spent were compared. A survey provided qualitative information about the perception and effectiveness of the ads. Significant effects were found when using negative emotional appeals through explicitness to enhance visual attention and audience perception. But, although the image has prominence, textual design should not be neglected to focus the emotional appeal of the ad.</p>

A large body of evidence supports the importance of focused attention for encoding and task performance. Yet young children with immature regulation of focused attention are often placed in elementary-school classrooms containing many displays that are not relevant to ongoing instruction. We investigated whether such displays can affect children's ability to maintain focused attention during instruction and to learn the lesson content. We placed kindergarten children in a laboratory classroom for six introductory science lessons, and we experimentally manipulated the visual environment in the classroom. Children were more distracted by the visual environment, spent more time off task, and demonstrated smaller learning gains when the walls were highly decorated than when the decorations were removed.
Data from: How biological attention mechanisms improve task performance in a large-scale visual system model
How does attentional modulation of neural activity enhance performance? Here we use a deep convolutional neural network as a large-scale model of the visual system to address this question. We model the feature similarity gain model of attention, in which attentional modulation is applied according to neural stimulus tuning. Using a variety of visual tasks, we show that neural modulations of the kind and magnitude observed experimentally lead to performance changes of the kind and magnitude observed experimentally. We find that, at earlier layers, attention applied according to tuning does not successfully propagate through the network, and has a weaker impact on performance than attention applied according to values computed for optimally modulating higher areas. This raises the question of whether biological attention might be applied at least in part to optimize function rather than strictly according to tuning. We suggest a simple experiment to distinguish these alternatives.

Perceiving not just values, but relations between values, is critical to human cognition. We tested the predictions of a proposed mechanism for processing categorical spatial relations between two objects—the shift account of relation processing—which states that relations such as 'above' or 'below' are extracted by shifting visual attention upward or downward in space. If so, then shifts of attention should improve the representation of spatial relations, compared to a control condition of identity memory. Participants viewed a pair of briefly flashed objects and were then tested on either the relative spatial relation or identity of one of those objects. Using eye tracking to reveal participants' voluntary shifts of attention over time, we found that when initial fixation was on neither object, relational memory showed an absolute advantage for the object following an attention shift, while identity memory showed no advantage for either object. This result is consistent with the shift account of relation processing. When initial fixation began on one of the objects, identity memory strongly benefited this fixated object, while relational memory only showed a relative benefit for objects following an attention shift. This result is also consistent, although not as uniquely, with the shift account of relation processing. Taken together, we suggest that the attention shift account provides a mechanistic explanation for the overall results. This account can potentially serve as the common mechanism underlying both linguistic and perceptual representations of spatial relations.
Data from: Human gaze tracks attentional focusing in memorised visual space
Brain areas that control gaze are also recruited for covert shifts of spatial attention (1-9). In the external space of perception, there is a natural, ecological link between the control of gaze and of spatial attention, since information sampled at covertly attended locations can inform where to look next (2,10,11). Attention can also be directed internally to representations held within the spatial layout of visual working memory (12-16). In such cases, the incentive for using attention to direct gaze disappears since there are no external targets to scan. Here we investigate whether the brain's oculomotor system also participates in attention within the internal space of memory. Paradoxically, we reveal this participation through gaze behaviour itself. We demonstrate that selecting an item from visual working memory biases gaze in the direction of the memorised location of that item – despite there being nothing to look at and even though location memory was never explicitly probed. This retrospective 'gaze bias' occurs only when an item is not already in the internal focus of attention, and predicts the performance benefit associated with the focusing of internal attention. We conclude that the oculomotor system also participates in the focusing of attention within memorised space, leaving traces all the way to the eyes.
