Animations of Uncertainty in Scalar Volume Data

<p>A collection of videos presenting the animations created for the master&#39;s thesis with the title &quot;<strong>Visualization of Uncertainty in 3D Scalar Data Using Extended 2D Transfer Functions and Animations&quot; </strong>of Tobias Neeb, master&#39;s student at Hochschule Worms (DE).&nbsp;</p> <p>The videos present animations of the application examples given in the thesis. Goal of the thesis here is to investigate possible new insights regarding uncertainty visualization by extending the functionality of classification widgets of the&nbsp;2D transfer function-editor in OpenWalnut, by introducting color maps, widget animations and a variety of new widget shapes.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The animations present a volume rendering of different scalar datasets from which the mean and standard deviation has been derived. The histogram of the 2DTF-editor here presents the 2D-distribution of mean and standard deviation(stdDev) as value pairs, the x-axis presenting the mean-field, while the y-axis presents the stdDev-field.</p>

Data for figures in "Next-generation ice nucleating particle sampling on aircraft: Characterization of the High-volume flow aERosol particle filter sAmpler (HERA)"

<p>Atmospheric ice nucleating particle (INP) concentration data from the free troposphere are sparse, but urgently needed to understand vertical transport processes of INPs and their influence on cloud formation and properties. Here, we introduce the new High-volume flow aERosol particle filter sAmpler (HERA) which was specially developed for installation on research aircraft and subsequent offline INP analysis. HERA is a modular system constisting of a sampling unit and a powerful pump unit and has several features which were integrated specifically for INP sampling. Firstly, the pump unit enables sampling at flow rates exceeding 100 L min<sup>&minus;1</sup>, which is well above typical flow rates of aircraft INP sampling systems described in the literature (~10 L min<sup>&minus;1</sup>). Consequently, required sampling times to capture rare, high-temperature INPs (&ge;-15 &deg;C) are reduced in comparison to other systems and potential source regions of INPs can be confined more precisely. Secondly, the sampling unit is designed as a seven-way valve, enabling switching between six filter holders and a bypass with one filter being sampled at a time. In contrast to other aircraft INP sampling systems, the valve position is controlled remotely via software so that manual filter changes in-flight are eliminated and the potential for sample contamination is decreased. This design is compatible with a high degree of automation, i.e., triggering filter changes depending on parameters like flight altitude, geographical location, temperature, or time. In addition to the design and principle of operation of HERA, this paper presents laboratory characterization experiments with size-selected test substances, i.e., SNOMAX&reg; and Arizona Test Dust. The particles were sampled on filters with HERA, varying either particle diameter (300 nm to 800 nm) or flow rate (10 L min<sup>&minus;1</sup> to 100 L min<sup>&minus;1</sup>) between experiments. The subsequent offline INP analysis showed good agreement with literature data and comparable sampling efficiencies for all investigated particle sizes and flow rates. Furthermore, the deposition efficiency of atmospheric INPs in HERA was compared to a straightforward filter sampler and good agreement was found. Finally, results from the first campaign of HERA on the High Altitude and LOng range research aircraft (HALO) demonstrate the functionality of the new system in the context of aircraft application.</p> <p>The given csv files contain the data for reproducing the figures in the publication. The data structure of the csv files is explained in the README file.</p>

Data from: Efficacy of Aedes aegypti control by indoor Ultra Low Volume (ULV) insecticide spraying in Iquitos, Peru

Background: Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and urban yellow fever viruses. Indoor, ultra low volume (ULV) space spraying with pyrethroid insecticides is the main approach used for Ae. aegypti emergency control in many countries. Given the widespread use of this method, the lack of large-scale experiments or detailed evaluations of municipal spray programs is problematic. Methodology/Principal Findings: Two experimental evaluations of non-residual, indoor ULV pyrethroid spraying were conducted in Iquitos, Peru. In each, a central sprayed sector was surrounded by an unsprayed buffer sector. In 2013, spray and buffer sectors included 398 and 765 houses, respectively. Spraying reduced the mean number of adults captured per house by ~83 percent relative to the pre-spray baseline survey. In the 2014 experiment, sprayed and buffer sectors included 1,117 and 1,049 houses, respectively. Here, the sprayed sector's number of adults per house was reduced ~64 percent relative to baseline. Parity surveys in the sprayed sector during the 2014 spray period indicated an increase in the proportion of very young females. We also evaluated impacts of a 2014 citywide spray program by the local Ministry of Health, which reduced adult populations by ~60 percent. In all cases, adult densities returned to near-baseline levels within one month. Conclusions/Significance: Our results demonstrate that densities of adult Ae. aegypti can be reduced by experimental and municipal spraying programs. The finding that adult densities return to approximately pre-spray densities in less than a month is similar to results from previous, smaller scale experiments. Our results demonstrate that ULV spraying is best viewed as having a short-term entomological effect. The epidemiological impact of ULV spraying will need evaluation in future trials that measure capacity of insecticide spraying to reduce human infection or disease.

Data for: Climate warming and projected loss of thermal habitat volume in lake populations of brook trout

<p>We applied an ensemble of climate warming models and the seasonal temperature profile model for lakes (STM) to assess changes in brook trout thermal habitat volume (THV) among lakes (N=100) within a large, protected area under two climate warming scenarios, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. Brook trout thermal habitat was defined as 9-17°C. Climate warming projections for the balance of this century, regardless of RCP category, will result in the loss of brook trout habitat in lakes that range widely in size. THV loss will be most extensive in lakes that are relatively shallow given their surface area. By 2071-2100 under RCP 4.5, the 90<sup>th</sup> percentile of THV loss = 31% vs. 63% under RCP 8.5. By the century's end under RCP 8.5, the protected area landscape will be a matrix of lakes with some serving as climate refugia (with reduced THV) and others having severe reductions in THV (&gt;90<sup>th</sup> percentile THV loss).</p>

Supplementary material and data from: Cranial volume and palate length of cats, Felis spp., under domestication, hybridisation and in wild populations

<p>Reduced brain size, compared with wild individuals, is argued to be a key characteristic among domestic mammal species, and is often thought to be a component of the "domestication syndrome". However, brain size comparisons are often based on old, inaccessible literature and in some cases drew comparisons between domestic animals and wild species that are no longer thought to represent the true progenitor species of the domesticated variant in question. Here we set out to replicate results concerning cranial volumes in domestic cats that were published in the 1960s and 1970s and compared wildcats, domestic cats and their hybrids. In light of new research and ideas surrounding domestication and its effects on domestic animals a replication of these studies is highly relevant. Apart from replicating these studies we also present new data on palate length in Felis cat skulls.</p> <p>Here we provide all data (both new and old digitzed data) upon which we based the analysis discussed in this manuscript.  We further provide a link to the code used in the analysis.</p>

Data from: Scaling of leaf area with biomass in trees reconsidered: Constant metabolically active sapwood volume per unit leaf area with height growth

<p>Hypoallometric (slope&lt;1) scaling between metabolic rate and body mass is often regarded as near-universal across organisms. However, there are compelling reasons to question hypoallometric scaling in woody plants, where metabolic rate=leaf area. This leaf area must provide carbon to the metabolically active sapwood volume (VMASW). Within populations of a species, variants in which VMASW increases per unit leaf area with height growth (e.g. ⅔ or ¾ scaling) would have proportionally less carbon for growth and reproduction as they grow taller. Therefore, selection should favor individuals in which, as they grow taller, leaf area scales isometrically with shoot VMASW (slope=1). Using tetrazolium staining, we measured total VMASW and total leaf area (LAtot) across 22 individuals of Ricinus communis and confirmed that leaf area scales isometrically with VMASW, and that VMASW is much smaller than total sapwood volume. With the potential of the LAtot-VMASW relationship to shape factors as diverse as the crown area-stem diameter relationship, conduit diameter scaling, reproductive output, and drought-induced mortality, our work suggests that the notion that sapwood increases per unit leaf area with height growth requires revision.</p>
