Effect of hip abduction assistance on metabolic cost and balance during human walking

<p>The use of wearable robots to provide walking assistance has rapidly grown over the last decade, with significant advances made in robot design and control methods toward reducing physical effort while performing an activity. The reduction in the walking effort has mainly been achieved by assisting forward progression in the sagittal plane. Human gait, however, is a complex movement that combines motions in three planes, not only the sagittal but also the transverse and frontal planes. In the frontal plane, the hip joint plays a key role in gait, including balance. However, wearable robots targeting this motion have rarely been investigated. In this study, we developed a hip abduction assistance wearable robot by formulating the hypothesis that assistance that mimics the biological hip abduction moment or power could reduce the metabolic cost of walking and affect the dynamic balance. We found that hip abduction assistance with a biological moment second peak mimic profile reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 11.6% compared to the normal walking condition (p=0.009). The assistance also influenced balance-related parameters, including the margin of stability. Hip abduction assistance influenced the center-of-mass movement in the mediolateral direction. When the robot assistance was applied as the center of mass moved toward the opposite leg, the assistance replaced some of the efforts that would have otherwise been provided by a human. This indicates that hip abduction assistance can reduce physical effort during human walking while influencing balance.</p>

Multiple motor tasks while walking in patients with chronic bilateral and unilateral vestibulopathy

<p><em><span>This dataset contains whole body movements (i.e. 3D trajectories) and 3D kinematics from 30 subjects (10 with bilateral vestibulopathy, 10 with unilateral vestibulopathy, and 10 healthy subjects) during multiple motor tasks while walking: change of speed, double task, gait with eyes closed, gait with head horizontal turns, gait with head vertical turn, step over an obstacle, gait and U-turn. Participants were instrumented with 35 reflective placed on the whole body according to the Convention Gait Model 1.0. </span></em><em><span>A 12-camera motion capture system (Oqus 7+, Qualisys, G&ouml;teborg, Sweden), set at a 100 Hz sampling frequency, was used to track cutaneous reflective markers. The marker trajectories were labeled using Qualisys Tracking Manager software (QTM 2019.3, Qualisys, G&ouml;teborg, Sweden) and exported in the C3D file format. Joint kinematics were calculated from the raw data of the marker trajectories and stored in C3D files.</span></em></p>

Fig. 1. The parasite fauna of Arctic ungulates has been shaped by historical and contemporary processes. Today, the Arctic today is characterized by extremes in temperature, high seasonality, and low host species diversity and abundance. Rapid climate warming is now a dominant feature that is altering host–parasite interactions in several ways. Temperatures directly affect parasite development and survival in the environment and in ectotherm hosts, and although warming temperatures may initially accelerate transmission, they may quickly exceed the upper thermal tolerance limits for some arctic parasites. Using the Metabolic Theory of Ecology, temperature dependencies can be modeled and generalized to provide broader insights across genera and ecological regions. Climate changes may also alter both host and parasite life-history strategies and phenology, including migration patterns, leading to non-linear changes and tipping points in transmission ecology. Climate warming and associated changes in the cryosphere also alters ecological barriers and corridors, leading to range shifts and new contact zones.

Only the data of stair walking were taken for further analysis. The staircase was equipped with a handrail on one side but none of the participants used it. To monitor the gaze a SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) eye-tracking glasses (ETG) system (SMI, Inc.) at a frequency of 60 frames per second and 1280x960 pixel picture was used. Calibration was performed using a matrix of 3 points placed on a board in different highs and different horizontal placement. Mean gaze vectors of the right eye (x, y, z) for stair descent and stair ascent were obtained for each data collection session. Gaze vector x, y, z starts at the eye and heads off in mediolateral, up and down, and anterior-posterior direction, respectively (Figure 2) (Haffegee, Alexandrov, &amp; Barrow, 2007; Scheel, &amp; Staadt, 2015).</p>

Continuous Digital Monitoring of Walking Speed in Frail Elderly Patients: Noninterventional Validation Study and Longitudinal Clinical Trial (Data for independent validation study)

<p>Digital technologies and advanced analytics have drastically improved our ability to capture and interpret health relevant data from patients. However, to date, limited data and results have been published detailing real-world patient compliance, demonstrating accuracy in target indications or examining what novel insights and clinical value can be derived. Here we present novel, digital mobility data from two studies: an independent, non-interventional validation study with elderly, naturally slow walking subjects, and a global, multi-site phase IIb clinical trial involving patients with age-related muscle loss and slow walking speed (sarcopenia). Based on these data, we validate the accuracy of a novel algorithm for capturing in-clinic and real-world gait speed in frail, slow-walking adults. We demonstrate the feasibility of continuous monitoring with a wearable inertial sensor in elderly adults in real-world settings, and propose minimum thresholds for compliance required for robust capture of gait behaviors in this population. We also show how simple, inferred contextual information, describing the length of a given walking bout, can explain some of the variation in real-world gait speed, and use this information to demonstrate for the first time a relationship between in-clinic performance and real-world gait speed behavior. This work lays a foundation for exploration of the clinical relevance and value of such measures and is a first step in building a more complete chain of evidence between standardized physical performance assessment, real-world behavior, and subjective perceptions of mobility, independence and health.</p> <p>This dataset contains data collected during the independent validation study: derived data from raw accelerometry data, and summary performance data.</p> <p>The full dataset, including raw accelerometry data, is available here:&nbsp;<a href="https://mueller-et-al-2019.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html">https://mueller-et-al-2019.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html</a></p>
