Numbers of War

<p>The data describes the total number of casualties of each war in the time span 768CE till 2019. This data is collected from the website www.necrometrics.com where for each war in the time span a number of sources are given each source providing an estimate of the number of casualties in the war. Along with the minimum and maximum estimates of the total number of casualties, respectively the median and mean values of these sources are collected and have been put into an excel file. The data can be used to analyze wars and the severity of wars in the past.</p>

Civil war is associated with longer escape distances among Sri Lankan birds - flight-initiation distances of Sri Lankan birds

<p>War influences wildlife in a variety of ways but may influence their escape responses to approaching threats, including humans, because of its effect on human populations and behaviour, and landscape change. We collected 1,400 Flight-Initiation Distances (FIDs) from 157 bird species in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, where civil war raged for 26 years, ending in 2009. Accounting for factors known to influence FIDs (phylogeny, starting distance of approaches, body mass, prevailing human density, group size and location), we found birds have longer FIDs in the part of the dry zone which experienced civil war. Larger birds, often preferred by human hunters, showed greater increases in FID in the war zone, consistent with the idea that war was associated with greater hunting pressure, that larger birds experienced longer-lasting trauma, or had more plastic escape behaviour, than smaller species. While the mechanisms linking the war and avian escape responses remain ambiguous, wars evidently leave legacies which extend to behavioural responses in birds.</p>

Web wars: Males of the golden orb-web spider invest more in fights for mated and aggregated females

<p>In addition to resource value, the cost of finding mates may affect how much males invest in fights for females. The cost of finding females may be imposed through natural factors extrinsic to males, such as female spatial distribution and predation pressure, which can be challenging to simulate in laboratory conditions. Therefore, studies under natural conditions may be suitable for understanding how the costs of finding mating partners affect male investment in fights. We used the spider <i>Trichonephila clavipes </i>to evaluate the hypotheses that males in field conditions invest more in contests for access to (1) unmated and (2) more fecund females, and (3) when access to females is harder. To test these hypotheses, we recorded the occurrence, duration and escalation of induced contests between males located in webs of females that differed in reproductive status (estimated by female life stage), fecundity (estimated by female abdominal area) and spatial distribution (i.e. isolated or aggregated with webs of other females). The occurrence and duration of contests were unrelated to female value or search costs. However, the probability for escalation was higher when males were fighting for adult (and probably mated) females. We also found that males tended to start a contest more often in aggregated webs. These results indicate that males of <i>T. clavipes</i> adjust investment in contests, but contrarily to what we expected. We suggest males invest more in contests for adult females because they are defending females that they previously fertilized to avoid sperm competition.</p>

Data from: In love and war: the morphometric and phylogenetic basis of ornamentation, and the evolution of male display behavior, in the livebearer genus Poecilia

Exaggerated male traits under sexual selection are often used for both competition and courtship, raising the question of whether ornaments evolved simultaneously for both functions, or if use in one context preceded use in another. Here we apply a phylogenetic approach to study the evolution of ornamental dorsal fins in male poeciliid fish of the subgenera Mollienesia and Limia, which exhibit convergent development of an enlarged dorsal fin, and often direct erect-fin displays to male and female conspecifics. Unlike prior categorical assessments of poeciliid adornments, we measure dorsal fin exaggeration with a continuous index of ornamentation. Phylogenetic logistic and generalized least-squares regression analyses indicate that high index values are significantly associated with the use of two component postures of courtship and aggressive displays, dorsal fin erection and body curvature, but not with the presence of sexual dichromatism. Male displays initially evolved for male-male aggression in the common ancestor of Mollienesia and Limia, suggesting that this signal originated for competition, then became co-opted for courtship. These results support the armament-ornament hypothesis for evolution of exaggerated male traits, and are consistent with an evolutionary shift in the predominant mechanisms of sexual selection from intra- to intersexual.

Spanish Civil War Observatory (Guadarrama)

Live in a secondary front during the Spanish Civil War was anything but quiet. Shooting and assaults were common business for the soldiers in any frontline. This position in Cuesta de la Casa (northern Madrid mountains) was no exception. At the bottom of the trench we found all the scrap produced by the shooters located in the upper pillbox, who threw it down. More than 30 clips and shells of spanish and german mauser, as well as some anecdotical 303British LeeEnfield and even greek shell, surely captured to the republicans. The mayority of the spanish ammo was from 1910/20's and little was found of german mauser. The material assemble indicates two main issues: 1- The mayority of the ammo was old, from spanish industries and include Lee-Enfield and greek mauser; german mausers were reserved to more elite units in critical areas and offensives. 2- The amount of shells and clips is indicative that a lot firing was taking place since 1938 (when the position was built) and that this was no quite front at all. Spanish Civil War Concentration Camp Guard House

Casa de Guarda is a concentration camp located in the north of Guadalajara (Spain). In previous models (https://skfb.ly/outRR) I share some of the barracks were the prisoners lived from 1938 until the end of the war, April 1939 and after. In this case, I brought you something completely different, a guard house. Its configuration is the opposite to the long dug out barraks of the republican prisoners. These are little rectangular houses with stone walls, for a little garrison. They are located at the entrance and key points of the camp and the material culture variates from the one found in the barracks, ammunition as well as alcoholic drinks (it is a cold region) and medecines were found all around the house, which means more availability of things in comparation with the barracks. An identificatory plate was found nearby. This project was carried out by the Incipit, directed by Alfredo González-Ruibal and Luis A. Casero and financed by the Secretariat of Democratic Memory. Shell Box recoved by Dive Newquay from the wreck of the Wart Barron sunk 9nm from Newquay Harbour SS War Baron, built by Northwest Steel Co., Portland, Oregon in 1917 and owned at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller (Cunard SS. Co. Ltd.), London, was a British steamer of 6.240 tons. On January 5th, 1918, War Baron, on a voyage from Southampton to Barry in ballast, was sunk by the German submarine U-55 (Wilhelm Werner), 8 miles northeast of the Godrevy lighthouse, St Ives. 2 persons were lost.
