Food and waterborne outbreaks data complementing the European Union One Health 2022 Zoonoses Report

<p>Food and waterborne outbreaks data reported under the framework of Directive 2003/99/EC and in accordance with the update of the technical specifications for harmonised reporting of FBOs through the EU reporting system in accordance with Directive 2003/99/EC. This dataset includes the number of outbreaks, as well as the number of human cases, hospitalisations and deaths, per causative agent. In addition, other information can include data on causative agents, food vehicles, and the factors in food preparation and handling that contributed to the food-borne outbreaks. Reporting countries can also provide information on the nature of the evidence supporting the suspicion of the food vehicle. This evidence can be epidemiological, microbiological, descriptive environmental, or based on product tracing investigations.&nbsp;</p>

Bacterial zoonoses impacts to conservation of wildlife populations: A global synthesis

<p>Emerging infectious diseases have significantly increased in recent years; approximately 60% of these emerging diseases are of zoonotic origin, and of those, around 70% were identified to start with wild animals. To better understand the impacts of zoonotic diseases on wildlife, there is a need to identify the distribution and impact of zoonotic pathogens in wildlife, particular those species with threatened populations. To investigate this question, we constructed a zoonotic disease database identifying wildlife hosts for each bacterial zoonotic disease and recorded clinical signs of disease for each host-pathogen relationship if found. Species of least concern were found to have a significantly higher prevalence and richness of zoonotic bacterial diseases (n= 0.0608, x<sup>2</sup>= 5.898, p=0.01516). The taxonomic level Order was found to be the best predictor for pathogen richness, and the Artiodactyla and Carnivora contain a significantly higher pathogen richness than other vertebrate Orders. Species with the greatest pathogen richness include the wild boar (<em>Sus scrofa</em>, n=66), Northern raccoon (<em>Procyon lotor</em>, n=16) and the red fox (<em>Vulpes vulpes</em>, n=41). Our results indicate bacterial zoonoses are not likely to be a driving factor of species population declines, and future zoonotic disease surveillance efforts should target species in the Artiodactyla and Carnivora families. The wild boar (<em>Sus scrofa</em>) in particular may be a good candidate for zoonotic disease monitoring due to its high pathogen richness, wide range, and large population. Understanding the impacts and distribution of bacterial zoonoses in wildlife populations can help in planning for future wildlife management efforts, particularly in species of conservation concern and wildlife disease monitoring.</p>

Excel mapping tools for 2021 zoonoses data reporting

<p>The main objective of the mapping tools is to provide a simple and useable platform for Member states and other reporting countries to map their country-specific standard terminology to that used by EFSA and to enable the production of an XML file for the submission of sample or aggregated-based zoonoses monitoring data via the Data Collection Framework (DCF).</p> <p>The catalogues and the specific hierarchy of each data model (PRV, FBO, AP, DS&nbsp;and SSD2 for&nbsp;<em>Echinococcus multilocularis</em>) are already inserted into each of the specific mapping tool. Specific Excel mapping tools corresponding to each of the five data models are available.</p> <p>Dynamic or manual version of the tool can be chosen for the first four&nbsp;data models.</p> <p>The Emulti_SSD2_tool can be used to report sample-based results of&nbsp;<em>Echinococcus multilocularis</em>&nbsp;under the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2018/772.</p>

Impact of disease characteristics and knowledge on public risk perception of Zoonoses

<p>Zoonoses represent a global public health threat. Understanding lay perceptions of risk associated with these diseases can better inform proportionate policy interventions that mitigate their current and future impacts. While individual zoonoses (e.g. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) have received scientific and public attention, we know little about how multiple zoonotic diseases vary relative to each other in lay risk perceptions. To this end, we examined public perceptions of eleven zoonoses across twelve qualitative attributes of risk among the UK public (n = 727, volunteer sample), using an online survey. We found that attribute ratings were predominantly explained via two basic dimensions of risk related to public knowledge and dread. We also show that, despite participants reporting low familiarity with most of the diseases presented, zoonoses were perceived as essentially avoidable. These findings imply that infection is viewed as dependent upon actions under personal control which has significant implications for policy development.</p>
