Data from: Clinical characteristics and prognosis of drug-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome compared with non-drug-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome: a single-centre retrospective study in Japan
Objectives To report the clinical features and prognosis of drug-associatedacute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Design A retrospective analysis of data collected during a prospective cohort study. Setting Intensive care unit in a teaching hospital. Participants A total of 197 Japanese patients with ARDS diagnosed by the Berlin definition who were admitted to the Division of Respiratory Medicine from October 2004 to December 2015 were enrolled in the study and were classified as two groups according to their causes: a drug-associated ARDS group (n=27) and a non-drug-associated ARDS group (n=170). Primary outcome measure is 28-day mortality, and the secondaryoutcome measure is ventilator-free days. Results The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores were significantly lower in the drug-associated ARDS group than in the non-drug-associated ARDS group (median (IQR): 18.0 (16.5–21.0) vs 23.0 (18.0–26.0), p<0.001), and the arterial oxygen tension/fractional inspired oxygen ratio was higher (148.0 (114.1–177.5) vs 101.0 (71.5–134.0), p=0.003). In the drug-associated ARDS group, although high-resolution CT scores indicative of the extent of fibroproliferation (301.6 (244.1–339.8) vs 208.3 (183.4–271.6), p<0.001), serum lactate dehydrogenase levels (477 (365–585) vs 322 (246–434), p=0.003) and the McCabe scores (score 1/2/3, n (%): 20 (74)/4 (15)/3 (11)vs154 (91)/7 (4)/9 (5), p=0.04) were significantly higher, ventilator weaning was earlier (p<0.001) and 28-day mortality was better (p=0.043). After adjusting for potentially confounding covariates, drug-associated ARDS group was associated with lower 28-day mortality (adjusted HR (HR) 0.275; 95% CI 0.106 to 0.711; p=0.008). Conclusions Although more severe lung damage with fibroproliferation was observed in patients with drug-associated ARDS, ventilator weaning was earlier, and their prognosis was better than the others. Further well-designed prospective studies are needed.

Elevated expression of TUBA1C in breast cancer predicts poor prognosis
<p>α1C-tubulin (<em><span>TUBA1C</span></em>) is a member of the α-tubulin family and has served as a potential biomarker in a variety of cancers in many studies. In this study, the gene expression profile of <em><span>TUBA1C </span></em>in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was extracted for analysis, and the prognostic value of <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> in breast cancer was comprehensively evaluated. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and logistic regression analysis were performed to confirm the correlations between <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> expression and the clinical characteristics of breast cancer patients. The effect of <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> expression on the survival of breast cancer patients was assessed by Kaplan-Meier curve, Cox regression analysis, and the Kaplan-Meier plotter (an online database). The TCGA data set was used for the Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). The results confirmed that high <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> expression in breast cancer was closely correlated with survival time, survival status, and tumor size. In addition, elevated <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> expression can predict poor overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). Univariate and multivariate analyses (Cox regression analyses) confirmed that <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> was an independent prognostic factor for the OS of breast cancer patients. The GSEA identified that the high <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> expression phenotype was differentially enriched in cell cycle, basal transcription factor, P53 signaling pathway, pathways in cancer, TOLL-like receptor signaling pathway, and NOD-like receptor signaling pathway. In summary, high messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of <em><span>TUBA1C</span></em> is an independent risk factor for poor prognosis of breast cancer.</p>

Influence of COVID‑19 on the prognosis and medication compliance of glaucoma patients in the Nile Delta Region
<p><span>Purpose: To assess the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the medication adherence and follow-up of glaucoma patients in the Nile Delta Region.</span></p> <p><span><span>Patients and Methods:</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Study design: An observational cross-sectional study</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Study setting: Nile Delta Region, Egypt</span></span></p> <p><span>Patients' records (2019-2020; group A) and (2020-2021; group B) were assessed for missed follow-up visits, medication adherence, number of trabeulectomies performed, and number of uncontrolled patients. In addition, a telephone-based questionnaire involving randomly chosen 200 patients from B.G.U. was carried out to clarify the potential causes of poor patients' compliance.</span></p> <p><span>Results: There was a marked decline in the number of newly diagnosed patients and patients on regular follow-up with incidence rates 0.208 and 0.088 in group (A) and group (B), respectively. The number of compliant patients in the second year (group B) decreased, with an incidence rate difference of 0.312. The number of trabeculectomies declined in group (B) with an incidence rate in group (A) 0.131 compared to 0.081 in group (B). On the other hand, the number of uncontrolled glaucoma patients increased in group B with an incidence rate difference -0.231between the two groups. 21.5% of patients who participated in the questionnaire identified financial issues as the leading cause of non-compliance. Comorbidities (19.5%), lockdown and transportation difficulties were also highlighted. </span></p> <p><span>Conclusion: COVID-19 had greatly hampered glaucoma care in the Nile Delta region. As a result, we need to implement new technologies like telemedicine and improve patients' awareness of glaucoma care.</span></p>
