Extended Storm Track Files for the GridRad-Severe Dataset

Extended versions of the storm track files available from the GridRad-Severe dataset (https://doi.org/10.5065/2B46-1A97). Files are grouped in .tar format for each year. Each storm track file is a copy of that included in the original archive, with select radar variables, storm mode classifications, and auxiliary information extracted along each storm's path and appended to the track file. The resulting data can be used to aid in objective supercell storm identification and other typing efforts.

Loss of branches due to winter storms could favor deciduousness in oaks

Premise of the study. Ecologists have an incomplete understanding of the factors that select for deciduous, evergreen, and marcescent leaf habits. Evergreens have more opportunities for photosynthesis but may experience costs when abiotic conditions are unfavorable such as during ice and windstorms.

Methods. We documented branch loss for species of oaks (Quercus spp) in a common garden in California during an unusual windstorm.

Key Results. Branches of marcescent trees were more likely to break during the storm and this pattern had a negligible phylogenetic signature. Branches of evergreen and marcescent species were mostly alive prior to breaking, which likely accrued a fitness cost, while those of deciduous species were mostly already dead. One explanation for the overrepresentation of broken branches from marcescent species is that their petioles are inflexible and have greater wind loading compared to the flexible petioles of evergreen leaves and the leafless condition of deciduous branches.

Conclusions. These results suggest that branch loss during unusual winter storms may be an important cost of a marcescent leaf habit.

Multi-instrument analysis of spatio-temporal confinement of ionospheric responses over African-Asian regions during St. Patrick's Day storm of March 2015

This data set is associated with a paper submitted to Space Weather Journal (AGU). The title of the paper is "Multi-instrument analysis of spatio-temporal confinement of ionospheric responses over African-Asian regions during St. Patrick's Day storm of March 2015" by Kader, Sk Samin, Dashora, N. and Niranjan, K.,

The data set consists of either *.dat or *.mat files arranged in separate folders for each figure. The data set can be used directly to plot the graphical results as presented in the above mentioned paper, upon final publication.

The ZIP file includes all the folder mentioned above.

This data set may be used for open access.

Geomagnetic Induced Currents (GICs) estimations for Portugal mainland - Top 8 geomagnetic storms of solar cycle 24

Geomagnetic Induced Currents, or GICs, are electric currents induced in conductive infrastructures (such as power lines and pipelines) due to changes in the Earth's magnetic field. GICs can cause power outages, damage transformers and other electrical equipment, and interfere with the operation of pipelines.

We present here the GIC estimation for all the high voltage lines (150, 220 and 400 kV) over mainland Portugal for the eight most intense geomagnetic storms during solar cycle 24. The induced electric field is calculated from geomagnetic series obtained at Coimbra or San Fernando magnetic observatories, according to the Nearest Neighbour method and from 31 magnetotelluric soundings (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7147543).

The GIC peak and standard deviation values for each substation are listed in the dataset. The criteria used for the definition of the geomagnetic storm duration in order to compute standard deviation values are based on the Ebre Observatory tables (https://www.obsebre.es/en/rapid) and the Hutchinson et al. (2011) criteria for the storm beginning and end, respectively.
