Water budget components and forest structure in burned and unburned longleaf pine stands, the Jones Center at Ichauway, Southwest Georgia, USA, 2015 - 2021
This data package includes data tables used to assemble a stand-level water budget of the longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem in southwestern Georgia, USA, between 2015 and 2021. Water budgets were estimated by measuring or modeling each distinct water budget component. Thus, the data tables included in the package are generally divided by stratum (i.e. overstory, midstory, vegetative groundcover, litter layer) and/or process (i.e. evaporation or transpiration). Relevant forest structure data is also included; they are often presented in tables alongside estimates of transpiration. Much of the data were collected across a soil moisture gradient, at both mesic and xeric sites, and in stands treated with different fire regimes: frequent prescribed fire (FF) or fire exclusion (EX). For some data, site or treatment may not be specified if the data were not collected for comparative purposes, but rather as representative baseline data for models that would be applied across sites and treatments. Transpiration data contained within this package include: 1) seasonal averages of daily sap-flux for pines and oaks measured with thermal dissipation probes 2) daily and seasonal transpiration for individual trees 3) seasonal transpiration for functional groups of shrubs and small trees 4) seasonal transpiration of groundcover functional groups Evaporation data contained within this package include: 1) Continuously-measured canopy interception and throughfall 2) overstory stemflow 3) midstory stemflow 3) groundcover interception and throughfall 4) litter moisture content data paired with time since rain (to develop litter drying curves), and 5) litter moisture content data paired with recent rain event depth (to develop litter wetting curves) Forest structure data contained within this package include: 1) Annual measures of tree DBH 2) Biannual estimates of small tree and shrub DBH, by functional group 3) Monthly estimates of groundcover functional group leaf area index 4) Monthly

Data from: Two new species of Parnassia (Celastraceae) from karst cave and Danxia landform in Southwest China
Two new species of Parnassia found in mountainous areas of Chongqing City, Southwest China, are described and illustrated: P. zhengyuanum M.X. Ren & J. Zhang and P. simianshanensis M.X. Ren, J. Zhang & Z.Y. Liu respectively. Parnassia zhengyuanum is found in a limestone cave near Mt. Jinfo, Nanchuan District, Chongqing City. This tiny plant has special spoon-shaped leaves and undivided staminodes with green apices. Parnassia simianshanensis was discovered in Mt. Simian, Jiangjin County, Chongqing City. This species grows along streams on red sandstones, i.e. in Danxia landform. It can be easily distinguished by its unique rhombic leaves and the five- or four-branched staminodes. The conservation status of P. zhengyuanum and P. simianshanensis are assessed respectively as 'Critically Endangered' (CR) and 'VU' (Vulnerable) according to IUCN criteria. The roles of karst and Danxia landforms in the speciation process are discussed.

A meta-analysis reveals increases in soil organic carbon following the restoration and recovery of croplands in Southwest China
<p>In China, the Grain for Green Program (GGP) is an ambitious project to convert croplands into natural vegetation, but exactly how changes in vegetation translate into changes in soil organic carbon remains less clear. Here we conducted a meta-analysis using 734 observations to explore the effects of land recovery on the soil organic carbon and nutrients in 4 provinces in Southwest China. Following GGP, the soil organic carbon content (SOCc) and soil organic carbon storage (SOCs) increased by 33.73% and 22.39%, respectively. Likewise, soil nitrogen increased, while phosphorus decreased. Outcomes were heterogeneous, however, depending on variation in soil and environmental characteristics. Both the regional land use and cover change indicated by landscape type transfer matrix and net primary production from 2000 to 2020 further confirmed that GGP promoted the forest area (2.95%) and regional mean net primary production (52.94%). Our findings suggest that GGP could enhance soil and vegetation carbon sequestration in Southwest China and help to develop carbon neutral strategy.</p>

Uribe-Rivera et al 2017 DataSet: High resolution bioclimatic layers for southwest of South America for three recent past periods (1970, 1990 and 2010)
<p>These files were generated as part of the article "Dispersal and extrapolation on the accuracy of temporal predictions from distribution models for the Darwin’s frog" (Uribe-Rivera et al. 2017; accepted in Ecological Applications)</p> <p>We used point data of meteorological stations between 34°-48°S and 70°-75°W, to generate new climatic surfaces for three recent past periods (1970; 1990; 2010). Meteorological data encompassed 293 weather stations, and were extracted from three databases: Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (DMC); Dirección General de Aguas de Chile (DGA); and the FAOClim-NET Agroclimatic database management system (FAO 2001), recording monthly records of mean daily minimum temperature, mean daily maximum temperature and total rainfall for 5-year periods (1965-1969 for 1970 climatic conditions; 1985-1989 for 1990 climatic conditions; and 2005-2009 for 2010 climatic conditions). For each period monthly mean values of each climatic variable were interpolated to generate surfaces using Anusplin v.4.4 (Hutchinson and Xu 2006), which applies the same algorithm used to derive the WorldClim bioclimatic surfaces (Hijmans et al. 2005). Interpolations were fitted following Pliscoff et al. (2014) at a ~1x1 Km resolution, with elevation as an independent variable using the GTOPO30 global digital elevation model (USGS, 1996). Because some weather stations do not have information for every month, we used the option of non-data of Anusplin. The quality of interpolations of climatic data was assessed calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient at the cell level between the monthly climatic values from the CRU-TS v3.10.01 Historic Climate Database for GIS (Climatic Research Unit - Time Series, 2012), and the monthly climatic values from the new climatic layers. Finally, surfaces of 19 bioclimatic variables were generated using the dismo package in R (Hijmans et al. 2014).</p> <p>All bioclimatic layers were uploaded in a single compressed ZIP file. Individual layers can be found inside it as georeferenced ASCII raster files, and nominated primarily by time period, and secundarily by the number of bioclimatic layer, following the worldclim nomenclature (http://www.worldclim.org/bioclim).</p>
Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and ice volume driven variations in hydrological environment in southwest China

Line scans of Element/Calcium ratios of the speleothem were measured by laser ablation ICPMS. Chronology is based on 58 U-Th ages.</p>

Divergence in cold tolerance promotes niche differentiation between diploid and polyploid kiwifruits along an altitudinal gradient in Southwest China
<p>Polyploidization is hypothesized to improve the freezing resistance of plants in cold regions. However, adaptive strategies and key physiological mechanisms involved in the freezing resistant ability of polyploids remain unclear. In <em>Actinidia chinensis</em> (kiwifruits), the tetraploids and hexaploids occupy higher altitude habitats with colder climates than the diploids, providing a study system to investigate mechanisms responsible for differentiation in freezing resistance between cytotypes. We characterized environmental conditions of their natural distribution areas, and measured leaf-level traits of cold damages and water relations at typical sites of each cytotype along an altitudinal gradient. Polyploids showed lower semi-lethal temperature (LT<sub>50</sub>) than ice nucleation temperature (INT), reflecting a tolerance strategy to cope with freezing events in the plateau regions. More negative turgor loss points and larger cell elastic modulus of polyploids could help to alleviate damages from freezing-induced cell dehydration, thus strengthening their tolerance to lower subzero temperatures (lower LT<sub>50</sub>). The increased supercooling capacity of polyploids (lower INT) might correlate with less extracellular ice formation due to lower osmotic potential at full turgor, apoplastic water fraction and tissue capacitance. Our study uncovers a greater cold tolerance in polyploid kiwifruits than diploids, and suggests the potential linkage between freezing tolerance and water relations. Taken together, such a divergence in stress resistance may underlie the niche shift of polyploid plants towards harsh environments.</p>
Data from: Brittle sedimentary strata focus a multimodal depth distribution of seismicity during hydraulic fracturing in the Sichuan basin, southwest China
<p>The number of background earthquakes (<em>M<sub>L</sub></em> ≥ 0) in the southern Sichuan basin, southwest China, has increased thirtyfold as a result of hydraulic fracturing. Background events are originally deep (4-6 <em>km</em>) within the sedimentary section but build into a multimodal distribution both at depth and in the shallow stimulated reservoir (2-4 <em>km</em>) - representing a counterpoint to the usual triggering of seismicity on deep sub-reservoir basement faults. Surprisingly, the largest events (<em>M<sub>L</sub></em> ≥ 3) evolve in the deep sedimentary strata (4-6 <em>km</em>) that are hydraulically isolated from the injection zone (2-4 <em>km</em>) by low permeability layers. We evaluate the friction-stability rheology of the strata within the full stratigraphic section to define the feasibility of nucleation within these shallow and deep strata. These show velocity-neutral to velocity-weakening behavior in the shallow reservoir transitioning to more strongly velocity-weakening with increase in both depth and temperature. Poroelastic stress calculations confirms that stress transfer, rather than transmitted fluid pressures, are capable of directly reactivating critically-stressed faults at depth, with fluid pressures the triggering source within the shallow reservoir.</p>
