Active Regions of Secondary Ice Production in a Modeled Tropical Mesoscale Convective System

<p>The animations of the modeled tropical mesoscale convective system (MCS). The red regions indicate the cloud regions with the secondary ice production rate dNice/dt &gt;10<sup>5</sup> m<sup>-3</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>. Data from: Boechera, a model system for ecological genomics

The selection and development of a study system for evolutionary and ecological functional genomics (EEFG) depends on a variety of factors. Here we present the genus Boechera as an exemplary system with which to address ecological and evolutionary questions. Our focus on Boechera is based on several characteristics: 1) native populations in undisturbed habitats where current environments reflect historical conditions over several thousand years; 2) functional genomics benefitting from its close relationship to Arabidopsis thaliana; 3) inbreeding tolerance enabling development of recombinant inbred lines, near-isogenic lines, and positional cloning; 4) interspecific crosses permitting mapping for genetic analysis of speciation; 5) apomixis (asexual reproduction by seeds) in a genetically tractable diploid; and 6) broad geographic distribution in North America, permitting ecological genetics for a large research community. These characteristics, along with the current sequencing of three Boechera species by the Joint Genome Institute, position Boechera as a rapidly advancing system for EEFG studies.

Data from: How biological attention mechanisms improve task performance in a large-scale visual system model

How does attentional modulation of neural activity enhance performance? Here we use a deep convolutional neural network as a large-scale model of the visual system to address this question. We model the feature similarity gain model of attention, in which attentional modulation is applied according to neural stimulus tuning. Using a variety of visual tasks, we show that neural modulations of the kind and magnitude observed experimentally lead to performance changes of the kind and magnitude observed experimentally. We find that, at earlier layers, attention applied according to tuning does not successfully propagate through the network, and has a weaker impact on performance than attention applied according to values computed for optimally modulating higher areas. This raises the question of whether biological attention might be applied at least in part to optimize function rather than strictly according to tuning. We suggest a simple experiment to distinguish these alternatives.

Viet Nam Technology catalogue for power generation and storage. Input for power system modelling

<p>The first Viet Nam Technology Catalogue was published in 2019. This new version includes all the technologies from the 2019 version that have been reviewed and updated where necessary. A main focus of the update has been to add new subcategories of technologies (roof-top solar PV, floating offshore wind, low wind speed turbines, improved flexibility of coal fired plants and pollution prevention technologies for coal power) as well as completely new technology descriptions and data sheets (tidal power, wave power, carbon capture and storage, coal CFB boilers and industrial cogeneration).</p> <p>This publication is developed under the Danish-Vietnamese Energy Partnership.</p> <p>The technologies described in this catalogue cover both very mature technologies and emerging technologies, which<br> are expected to improve significantly over the coming decades, both with respect to performance and cost. This<br> implies that the cost and performance of some technologies may be estimated with a rather high level of certainty<br> whereas, in the case of other technologies, both cost and performance today and in the future is associated with a<br> high level of uncertainty. All technologies have been grouped within one of four categories of technological<br> development described in the section on research and development indicating their technological progress, their<br> future development perspectives and the uncertainty related to the projection of cost and performance data.</p> <p>The technologies in the catalogue include the power production unit and the connection to the grid. This means<br> that the boundary for both cost and performance data are the generation assets plus the infrastructure required to<br> deliver the energy to the main grid. For electricity, this is the nearest substation of the transmission grid. This<br> implies that a MW of electricity represents the net electricity delivered, i.e. the gross generation minus the auxiliary<br> electricity consumed at the plant. Hence, efficiencies are also net efficiencies.</p> <p>The text and data have been edited based on Vietnamese cases to represent local conditions. For the mid- and long-<br> term future (2030 and 2050) international references have been relied upon for most technologies since Vietnamese<br> data is expected to converge to these international values. In the short run differences may exist, especially for the<br> emerging technologies. Differences in the short run can be caused by e.g. current rules and regulations and level of<br> market maturity of the technology. Differences in both the short and long run can be caused by local physical<br> conditions, e.g. seabed material and offshore conditions can affect costs of offshore wind farms and wind speed can<br> affect the dimensioning of rotor vs. generator which can influence the cost, or domestic coal quality can affect<br> efficiency and variable cost of coal-fired plants as well.</p> <p>Land use is assessed but the cost of land is not included in the total cost assessment since this depends on local<br> conditions.</p>

Two new hybrid populations expand the swordtail hybridization model system

<p>Natural hybridization events provide unique windows into the barriers that keep species apart as well as the consequences of their breakdown. Here we characterize hybrid populations formed between the northern swordtail fish Xiphophorus cortezi and X. birchmanni from collection sites on two rivers. We use simulations and new genetic reference panels to develop sensitive and accurate local ancestry calling in this novel system. Strikingly, we find that hybrid populations on both rivers consist of two genetically distinct subpopulations: a cluster of pure X. birchmanni individuals and one of phenotypically intermediate hybrids that derive ~85-90% of their genome from X. cortezi. Simulations suggest that initial hybridization occurred ~150 generations ago at both sites, with little evidence for contemporary gene flow between subpopulations. This population structure is consistent with strong assortative mating between individuals of similar ancestry. The patterns of population structure uncovered here mirror those seen in hybridization between X. birchmanni and its sister species, X. malinche, indicating an important role for assortative mating in the evolution of hybrid populations. Future comparisons will provide a window into the shared mechanisms driving the outcomes of hybridization not only among independent hybridization events between the same species but also across distinct species pairs.</p>

Invasibility is defined as the characteristics of a habitat that makes it vulnerable to be invaded by introduced species. Invasiveness is defined as those characteristics or traits of introduced species that enable them to establish in a new area. Stochastic events are events that may or may not change invasibility and invasiveness affecting the establishment process. We predict the rate of successful establishment will increase at the mid-point where all three categories overlap. However, in the absence of stochastic events that would influence the establishment process, we may predict the success rate of establishment by assessing only the species' match in invasiveness with invasibility of the recipient ecosystem.
