Raw data for Role of the ferroelastic strain in the optical absorption of BiVO4
<p>The following raw data are the basis of the paper "Role of the ferroelastic strain in the optical absorption of BiVO<sub>4</sub>" published in APL Materials in 2020 at http://doi.org/10.1063/5.0011507h. </p> <p>The UV/VIS measurements were carried out in air with a Jasco MSV-370 microspectrophotometer. The spectrophotometer operates a deuterium lamp for the UV and a halogen lamp for the visible and near infrared light range and collects the light using non-dispersive Schwarzschild objectives. Two samples have been investigated. The samples were cut and polished from a larger single crystal pulled by the Czochralski-method. The first sample has a (110) surface orientation and a thickness of 360 μm; the second sample has a (001)-oriented surface and a thickness of 100μm. The samples were placed in a Linkam THMS600 heating stage. Using an aperture, the measurement areas were set to 400μm x 400μm and 300μm x 300μm for the (110)-oriented sample and the (001)-oriented sample, respectively. For all reflectance measurements, an aluminium mirror was used for calibration.</p>
Quantitative Nanoscale Absorption Mapping: A Novel Technique To Probe Optical Absorption of Two-Dimensional Materials
<p>Two-dimensional semiconductors, in particular transition metal dichalcogenides and related heterostructures, have gained increasing interest as they constitute potential new building blocks for the next generation of electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this work, we develop a novel nondestructive and noncontact technique for mapping the absorption properties of 2D materials, by taking advantage of the underlying substrate cathodoluminescence emission. We map the quantitative absorption of MoS<sub>2</sub> and MoSe<sub>2</sub> monolayers, obtained on sapphire and oxidized silicon, with nanoscale resolution. We extend our technique to the characterization of the absorption properties of MoS<sub>2</sub>/MoSe<sub>2</sub> van der Waals heterostructures. We demonstrate that interlayer excitonic phenomena enhance the absorption in the UV range. Our technique also highlights the presence of defects such as grain boundaries and ad-layers. We provide measurements on the absorption of grain boundaries in monolayer MoS<sub>2</sub> at different merging angles. We observe a higher absorption yield of randomly oriented monolayers with respect to 60° rotated monolayers. This work opens up a new possibility for characterizing the functional properties two-dimensional semiconductors at the nanoscale.</p> <p> </p> <p>This dataset contains some of the raw data for Figures 1 and 2.</p>
Measuring the Optical Absorption of Single Nanowires
<p>In this work we present a method to quantitatively measure the optical absorption of single nanowires that can be applied over a wide range of temperatures and with a high enough sensitivity to enable the measurement of below-band-gap absorption (as well as the absorption of single molecules). The method is based on accurately measuring the heat flow coming from a nanowire when it is illuminated by a laser beam. We experimentally verify this method by measuring the absorption of both a zincblende and a wurtzite GaAs, a wurtzite GaP, and a superlattice <span class="MathJax_CHTML mjx-chtml"><span class="mjx-math"><span class="mjx-mrow"><span class="mjx-msub"><span class="mjx-base"><span class="mjx-mi"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">Zn</span></span></span><span class="mjx-sub"><span class="mjx-mn"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">3</span></span></span></span><span class="MJXc-space1 mjx-msub"><span class="mjx-base"><span class="mjx-mi"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">P</span></span></span><span class="mjx-sub"><span class="mjx-mn"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">2</span></span></span></span></span></span></span> nanowire. Furthermore, we find that the <span class="MathJax_CHTML mjx-chtml"><span class="mjx-math"><span class="mjx-mrow"><span class="mjx-msub"><span class="mjx-base"><span class="mjx-mi"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">Zn</span></span></span><span class="mjx-sub"><span class="mjx-mn"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">3</span></span></span></span><span class="MJXc-space1 mjx-msub"><span class="mjx-base"><span class="mjx-mi"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">P</span></span></span><span class="mjx-sub"><span class="mjx-mn"><span class="MJXc-TeX-main-R mjx-char">2</span></span></span></span></span></span></span> nanowires have the largest absorption of all these materials. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the method and study its range of applicability.</p>
