Hawaiian gallinule vital rate data from O'ahu and Kaua'i: Reproduction and survival data from an endangered bird

<p>Where stable source populations of at-risk species exist, translocation may be a reasonable strategy for re-establishing extirpated populations. However, the success rates of such efforts are mixed, necessitating thorough preliminary investigation. Stochastic population modeling can be a useful method of assessing the potential success of translocations. Here, we report on the results of modeling translocation success for the Hawaiian Common Gallinule ('alae 'ula; <em>Gallinula galeata sandvicensis</em>), an endangered waterbird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Using updated vital rates, we constructed a model simulating three existing extant (wild) source populations and a hypothetical recipient site on another island. We then projected the effects of six different translocation scenarios and sensitivity of the results to variation of three important demographic parameters on the probability of extinction (PE) of the reintroduced and donor populations. Larger translocations, of at least 30 birds, had low probability of extinction in the reintroduced population, but raised extinction risk of the smallest source population. Spacing out translocations in time (e.g., 10 birds translocated in total in three installments over nine years), led to lower PE than translocating all individuals at once (i.e., bulk translocations) for both the source and reintroduced populations. Brood size and hatch-year juvenile survival had a disproportionate impact on reintroduced population viability. Importantly, the reported juvenile survival rate is very near the threshold for population failure. This suggests that post-introduction and subsequent management of wetlands, particularly predator control, could be critical to reintroduction success. We recommend that individuals should be translocated from multiple, genetically distinct subpopulations to reduce the possibility of inbreeding depression. Based on this analysis, the recipient wetland should be sufficiently large that it can support at least 25 pairs of gallinules. Based on recent estimates of population densities on O'ahu, such a wetland would need to be between 3.75-74.6 ha.</p> <p>Where stable source populations of at-risk species exist, translocation may be a reasonable strategy for re-establishing extirpated populations. Future sea level rise in northwest Mexico is projected to decrease the distribution and habitat quality of the endangered Calidris canutus roselaari (Red Knot)

<p>Sea level rise (SLR) is one of the most unequivocal consequences of climate change, yet the implications for shorebirds and their coastal habitats is not well understood, especially outside of the north temperate zone. Here, we show that by the year 2050, SLR has the potential to cause significant habitat loss and reduce the quality of the remaining coastal wetlands in Northwest Mexico—one of the most important regions for Nearctic breeding migratory shorebirds. Specifically, we used species distribution modelling and a moderate SLR static inundation scenario to assess the effects of future SLR on coastal wetlands in Northwest Mexico and the potential distribution of <em>Calidris canutus roselaari </em>(Red Knot), a threatened long-distance migratory shorebird. Our results suggest that under a moderate SLR scenario, 55% of the current coastal wetland extent in northwest Mexico will be at risk of permanent submergence by 2050, and the high-quality habitat areas that remain will be 20% less suitable for <em>C. c. roselaari</em>. What is more, 8 out of the 10 wetlands currently supporting the largest numbers of <em>C. c. roselaari</em> are predicted to lose — on average — 17.8% of their highly suitable habitat areas, with two sites completely losing all their highly suitable habitat. In combination with increasing levels of coastal development and anthropogenic disturbance in Northwest Mexico, these predicted changes suggest that the potential future distribution of <em>C. c. roselaari</em> (and other shorebirds) will likely contract, exacerbating their ongoing population declines. Our results also make clear that SLR will likely have profound effects on ecosystems outside the north temperate zones, providing a clarion call to natural resource managers. Urgent action is required to begin securing sufficient space to accommodate the natural capacity of wetlands to migrate inland and implement local-scale solutions that strengthen the resilience of wetlands and human populations to SLR.</p>

Data from: First dispersal records of the endangered Banteng (Bos javanicus) in Thung Yai Naresuan West Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

<p>Banteng (<em>Bos javanicus</em>) is listed as an endangered species because of a global population decline of at least 50% over the last 25 years. The Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) of Thailand has been identified as a priority site for banteng population recovery, and Huai Kha Keang Wildlife Sanctuary (HKK) is the most important source site for this species within the WEFCOM. We have provided evidence and discussed banteng dispersal from HKK to Thung Yai Naresuan West Wildlife Sanctuary (TYW). We sampled an area of 147 km<sup>2</sup> in banteng habitat next to the border between HKK and TYW using camera traps. We divided the sampled area into four grid cells and placed camera traps during January to December 2022. We setup the camera traps near saltlicks and natural water sources, as important resources for banteng, to maximize capture probability. In total, 2,835 trap days were obtained. Bantengs were captured in all seasons (RAI=1.66), especially in dry dipterocarp forest, which contains the ground forage availability for banteng, and the low-slope area with elevation 600–700 m adjacent to the border between HKK and TYW. The results highlighted that banteng, which had never been reported in TYW before, appeared there for the first time. They most likely dispersed from the population source in HKK and settled in a habitat that is considered suitable for them. The habitat management and protection are significant for the future recovery of banteng populations in the TYW and the rest of protected areas in the WEFCOM.</p>

Slope position affects growth and allometry of the endangered conifer Calocedrus macrolepis by mediating soil properties and microbial communities

<p><strong>Premise:</strong><em> </em>The allometric relationships among growth traits are highly relevant for a tree's fitness, however, the mechanism of how the slope position affects the plant growth and allometry remains poorly understood, hindering our understanding of the variation in allometry of trees along slope position in mountainous areas.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A typical slope of <em>Calocedrus macrolepis</em> plantation in southwest China was chosen to measure growth traits and their allometric relationships. In addition, spatial variations in soil properties and microbial communities were also investigated.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong><em> </em>Slope position altered the allometric growth pattern with the larger allometric exponents of the tree height, diameter and wood volume relative to the crown size and height under the branch for the downslope. Additionally, most of soil nutrients, microbial diversity and abundances were greater at mesoslope and downslope, especially at the surface soil layer. The relative abundance both in Chloroflexi and Actinobacteria differed significantly among slope positions, while fungal dominant phyla abundances varied little across slope positions, indicating that bacterial community was more sensitive to slope position than fungal community. The growth traits and allometry were affected by the slope position, which is mainly caused by the variations of soil properties and microbial communities, and bacteria were more important than fungi in their relationships to growth traits and allometry.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Together, results emphasized that slope position indirectly influences the growth traits and allometry of <em>C. macrolepis</em> by regulating soil nutrients and microbial communities, which will provide important theoretical basis for the plantation management of <em>C. macrolepis</em>.</p>
