Rupture Jumping and Seismic Complexity in Models of Earthquake Cycles for Fault Stepovers with Off-Fault Plasticity

<p>Fault stepovers are prime examples of geometric complexity in natural fault zones which may affect seismic hazard by determining whether an earthquake rupture continues propagating, or abruptly stops. However, the long-term pattern of seismicity near fault stepovers and underlying mechanisms of rupture jumping in the context of earthquake cycles are rarely studied. Leveraging a hybrid numerical scheme combining the finite element and the spectral boundary integral methods, FEBE, we carry out fully dynamic simulations of Sequences of Earthquakes and Aseismic Slip (SEAS) for both compressive and tensile stepovers, with off-fault plasticity. We consider a rate-and-state friction law for the fault friction, and pressure sensitive Drucker-Prager plasticity for the off-fault bulk response.&nbsp;&nbsp; We observe that the accumulation of plastic deformation, an indication of off-fault damage, is significantly different in the two cases with more plastic deformation projected in the overlapping region for the tensile stepover. The seismic pattern for a tensile stepover is more complex than for a compressive stepover, and incorporating plasticity also increases complexity, relative to the elastic case. A tensile stepover with off-fault plasticity shows rupture segmentation, temporal clustering, and frequent rupture jumping from one fault to another. These results shed light on possible mechanisms of rupture jumping in fault stepovers as well as the long-term evolution of the fault zone.</p>

Carbon and oxygen isotope values of bulk carbonates for Castellas Fault zone and D19 fault zones, La Fare anticline (SE France).

<p>Carbon and oxygen isotope values of bulk carbonates for Castellas Fault zone and D19 fault zones, La Fare anticline (SE France).</p> <p><strong>B</strong>: bulk measurement; <strong>M</strong>: micrite&nbsp;value; <strong>C1, C3, C4,</strong> and <strong>C5</strong>: cement isotopic value; <strong>FR</strong>: fault rock isotopic value.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To determine stable carbon and oxygen isotopes (13C&nbsp;and 18O), 204 microsamples (&lt; 5 mg) were drilled, 194 of&nbsp;them were micro-drilled from polished thin sections with an&nbsp;80 &mu;m diameter micro-sampler (Merkantec Micromill) at VU&nbsp;15 Amsterdam&nbsp;(the Netherlands). We micro-sampled bulk&nbsp;rocks (57), sparitic cements (101), fault rocks (9) and micrite&nbsp;(27). The bulk rock values are related to a nonselective&nbsp;sampling giving information on the whole-rock isotopic values.&nbsp; These values do not capture the signature of isolated cement (Swart, 2015). Carbon and oxygen isotopic values were&nbsp;acquired with Thermo Finnigan DeltaCmass spectrometer equipped with a GasBench preparation device at VU Amsterdam.&nbsp; The internationally used standard IAEA-603, with&nbsp;official values of +2.46&permil;for 13C and -2:37&permil;for 18O, is&nbsp;25 measured as a control standard. The standard deviation (SD)&nbsp;of the measurements is, respectively, &lt; 0:1&permil; and &lt; 0:2&permil;&nbsp;for 13C and 18O. Ten whole-rock samples were analyzed&nbsp;using a GasBench II connected to a Thermo Fisher Delta V&nbsp;Plus mass spectrometer at the FAU University (Erlangen,&nbsp;30 Germany). Measurements were calibrated by assigning 13C&nbsp;values of +1:95&permil; to NBS19 and -47:3&permil; to IAEA-CO9&nbsp;and 18O values of -2:20&permil; to NBS19. All values are reported<br> in per mil relative to V-PDB.</p>

The potential for low-grade metamorphism to facilitate fault instability in a geothermal reservoir

<p>Swarms of earthquakes during shale gas exploitation in the Changning area of the Sichuan Basin indicate that hydraulic fracturing induces seismicity both within the target reservoir formation but also to depths of several kilometers below the horizontal well. These remote earthquakes are possibly triggered by total stress perturbations resulting from the hydraulic fracturing. We use a dislocation-based analytical model to simulate multistage hydraulic fracturing of three horizontal wells at a single well pad to explore the spatiotemporal evolution of the total stress perturbations. Results show that the number and distribution of fracturing stages affect both the distribution and magnitude of stress changes and that the stress change diminishes with distance. The undrained injection-induced stress change is less than 10-3 <i>MPa</i> at distances ≥1 <i>km</i> for single-stage fracturing but reach 10-1 <i>MPa</i> for multistage fracturing of 30 stages in all three wells. Undrained stress changes scale linearly with the magnitude of fluid leak-off into the formation – halving the effective fracture width halves the induced stress magnitudes and with an identical distribution – limiting the potential for fault reactivation. Scaling analysis for pressure diffusion distal from the reservoir indicates that the short-term (days to weeks) impact is indeed essentially undrained. Estimates for long-term reservoir depletion (months to years) identify a similar induced stress signal of opposite sign but with similar Coulomb potential for reactivation in the long term. Such magnitudes of Coulomb stress changes suggest the possibility of fault reactivation on deep critically-stressed faults at kilometer separation from the injection both in the short term due to stimulation and in the long term as a result of reservoir depletion.</p>

Matlab Algorithm for Systematic Vertical Separation Measurements of Tectonic Fault Scarps

<p>We have studied the topography along the Lost River Fault in Idaho (USA) and in particular the rupture zone generated by the strong 1983 Borah Peak earthquake (Mw 6.9) almost 40 years after its occurrence. Our first reason for acquiring these data was to systematically measure vertical separation (VS) along the fault.<br> To do this we have developed and implemented a scarp analysis algorithm in MATLAB (www.mathworks.com) which enables users to measure the vertical separation from a topographic profile. The code constructs a topographic profile along the preferred trend (generally perpendicular to the fault trace) and projects the best-fit lines to each of the hanging wall and footwall flat to the fault location. The vector difference between the intersection of these lines with a vertical plane at the fault location is the vertical separation. Please see the code guide for additional detail.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: A geology and geodesy based model of dynamic earthquake rupture on the Rodgers Creek-Hayward-Calaveras fault system, California

<p>The Hayward fault in California's San Francisco Bay area produces large earthquakes, with the last occurring in 1868. We examine how physics-based dynamic rupture modeling can be used to numerically simulate large earthquakes on not only the Hayward fault, but also its connected companions to the north and south, the Rodgers Creek and Calaveras faults. Equipped with a wealth of images of this fault system, including those of its 3D geology and 3D geometry, in addition to inferences about its interseismic creep rate pattern and rock-friction behavior, we use a finite-element computer code to perform 3D dynamic earthquake rupture simulations. We find that the rock properties affect the locations and amount of slip produced in our simulated large earthquakes. Crucial factors that control rupture behavior in our modeling are the earthquake nucleation locations, the fault geometry, and the data that reveal where the fault system is creeping or locked. Our findings suggest that large Rodgers Creek-Hayward-Calaveras-Northern Calaveras (RC-H-C-NC) fault-system earthquakes may result from dynamic rupture that starts in a locked part of the fault system, but is then stopped by the creeping parts, leading to high magnitude-6 earthquakes; or, from dynamic rupture that starts in a locked part of the fault system, then cascades through some of the creeping parts, leading to magnitude-7 earthquakes.</p>
