Potential benefits of incorporating arable wildflowers into living mulches for sustainable agriculture
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Background: </b>As agriculture has intensified, many once-common wildflowers have declined in arable landscapes, which has widespread implications for associated ecosystem services. The incorporation of sustainable practices, for example, growing living mulches (in-field, non-crop plant ground cover, maintained during the target crop growing season), can boost arable biodiversity, but few wildflower species have been utilised in this context. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Aims: </b>Our aim was to determine the suitability of arable wildflower species, once considered weeds, for use as living mulches.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Methods: </b>We first screened a number of arable wildflower species for germination when growing with a common cereal, barley (<i>Hordeum vulgare</i>). We then grew two (<i>Centaurea cyanus</i> and <i>Scandix pecten-veneris</i>) in pots in a glasshouse with and without barley, and grew barley alone to test the impact of the wildflowers on barley growth and biomass.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Results: </b>Neither of the wildflowers significantly negatively impacted barley biomass. Barley initially facilitated germination in <i>S. pecten-veneris</i>, but ultimately suppressed the above-ground biomass of both wildflowers. However, both wildflower species were able to coexist alongside barley.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Conclusions: </b>Our experiment provides evidence that wildflowers that were considered weeds in traditional agriculture have the potential to be grown alongside barley and could be incorporated as part of a living mulch.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Assessing consumers' attitudes, expectations and intentions towards health and sustainability regarding seafood consumption in Italy
<p>The EU and its Member States have articulated a sustainability vision ‘to live well within the limits of our planet’ by 2050. In this context, consumers play a key role, being able to drive seafood production sustainability and responsibility according to their behaviour, also in relation to their attitudes towards health, nutrition and wellbeing. On the basis of these premises, this research explores Italian consumers' attitudes towards health and sustainability in relation to seafood, in order to segment different target of consumers. The framework used in this study is mainly focused on a quantitative exploratory data collection based on an online survey. Three groups of consumerswere identified based on general health interest, perceived benefits of eating seafoods and attitude towards seafoods: Health seekerswho eat seafood for duty; Health seekers and seafood lovers; Lowcommitment to health and indifferent to seafood. Differences among groups related to socio-demographic characteristics, sustainability attitudes, intentions and interest in information about seafood productswere also investigated. In particular, the first two groups are more familiar with sustainable seafood products and more interested in information on these products than the third, both in terms of product origin and seasonality. Consumers belonging to second group show a higher probability to buy seafood products considering this characteristic than the other two groups. Based on the results obtained, a strategic plan could be developed to achieve relevant goals in education, communication and sustainability labelling related with seafood products. Following a preliminary scouting carried out with all the seafood stakeholders, a specific territory to test this approach has been already identified in Torre del Cerrano (Italy). These results have a strong implication for policy makers and educational<br> institutions as they identify differences in attitudes and perceptions among consumers that are crucial in order to<br> design the right communication strategy strategies as well as messages content.</p>

Towards Sustainability of Systematic Literature Reviews
<p>Background: The software engineering community has increasingly conducted systematic literature reviews (SLR) as a means to summarize evidence from different studies and bring to light the state of the art of a given research topic. While SLR provide many benefits, they also present several problems with punctual solutions for some of them. However, two main problems still remain: the high time-/effort-consumption nature of SLR and the lack of an effective impact of SLR results in the industry, as initially expected for SLR. Aims: The main goal of this paper is to introduce a new view - which we name <strong>Sustainability of SLR</strong> - on how to deal with SLR aiming at reducing those problems. Method: We analyzed six reference studies published in the last decade to identify, group, and analyze the SLR problems and their interconnections. Based on such analysis, we proposed the view of Sustainability of SLR that intends to address these problems. Results: The proposed view encompasses three dimensions (social, economic, and technical) that could become SLR more sustainable in the sense that the four major problems and 31 barriers (i.e., possible causes for those problems) that we identified could be mitigated. Connectivity and succession of open structures as a key to sustaining light-demanding biodiversity in deciduous forests
<p>1. European forests are facing a rapid decline of light-demanding biota. This has prompted active interventions to re-establish and maintain partial habitat openness in protected areas. Managers of protected areas, however, need substantially more scientific evidence to support their decisions on where, when, and how to intervene.</p> <p>2. We investigated the importance of spatial continuity of open forest habitats in different years of succession, using six pairs of experimental clearings established in the formerly open, oak-dominated forests of the Podyji National Park (Czech Republic). In each pair, one clearing was connected to the forest edge, while the other was isolated in closed forest. We sampled butterflies (74 spp.), moths (435 spp.), saproxylic beetles (465 spp.), and vascular plants (567 spp.) on the 12 clearings during the first five years of succession. We then compared species richness, abundance, and composition of the four taxa between the two clearing types and along the succession.</p> <p>3. All studied insect groups were substantially more species-rich and more abundant in connected than in isolated clearings. Species composition of plants, moths, and butterflies differed between the clearing types.</p> <p>4. The number of species of all studied taxa generally increased from the first to the second or third year after cutting; species composition of all taxa differed among years. This suggests rapid changes in habitat quality and thus limited time for colonisation by light-demanding organisms.</p> <p>5. <i>Synthesis and applications</i>: Our results offer an evidence that spatial connectivity and rapid temporal dynamics are important habitat features for light-demanding insects. Attempts to create or restore habitats for light-demanding forest biota should take into account that: (i) Insects benefit from direct connection of new open patches to open habitats or flight corridors such as forest edges. (ii) Considering plants, the optimal solution is to connect newly created open forest habitats to existing habitats with established biota of high conservation value. (iii) Interventions should be carried out within short time intervals, i.e. within years rather than decades. (iv) A fine mosaic of interconnected<span>, open woodland patches in various successional stages is more beneficial than a single large patch with a single successional stage.</span></p>

<p>This file contains the dataset associated to the published research article "Nanoscaffold effects on air-cathode performance in microbial fuel cells: Fe/N-carbon electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction under neutral pH conditions". The dataset contains X-ray powder diffraction, Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy, elemental analysis, measurements of the specific surface area, transmission electron microscopies, x-ray photoelectron microscopy, electrochemistry and microbial fuel cells power outputs data from their relative instruments. Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund Project #52002: Climate warming effects on Chinook Salmon foraging conditions and growth
<p>The Chena River hosts one of the largest populations of Chinook Salmon in the Alaska portion of the Yukon River drainage, which has recently experienced poor Chinook returns throughout. Past work suggests that these fish do poorly when they grow slowly due to cold, high-flow conditions during their first summer in the river as juveniles, and the population does well when juveniles experience warm, low-flow years and grow larger. Because high flow drives low water temperatures and vice versa, it was previously unclear to what extent each factor—flow and temperature—affects the fish population.</p> <p>We collected data to run foraging and bioenergetics models that simulate how flow and temperature affect growth. We invented two sampling devices, a suction pump to sample drifting prey and a computer vision system to measure the inedible debris that occupy most of a fish's feeding effort. We combined our data with USGS and NOAA records to predict temperature, turbidity, prey, and debris on a daily basis throughout our study years (2019-2020) and others.</p> <p>This dataset contains the data we collected and compiled from other sources on fish growth, temperature, invertebrate drift, and drifting debris.</p>

Expert consensus on core topics of sustainable development online learning module for family physicians: A Delphi study
<p><strong>Objectives</strong></p> <p>Medical institutions must provide learning experiences that enhance the knowledge and perspectives of Sustainable Development (SD) to prepare trainees of family medicine to become competent global citizens. The aim of this study was to develop an SD online learning module for trainees of family medicine.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong></p> <p>This mixed-methods study was conducted from January 2020 to May 2021, beginning with a literature review concerning Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in medicine. In-depth interviews were held to assess the relevant needs of family medic<span>ine</span> training, followed by a two-round Delphi survey with experienced educators (n = 21) in family medicine to refine and achieve consensus on the appropriate SDG topics for family physicians.</p> <p><strong>Setting</strong></p> <p>All residency training programmes in Thailand.</p> <p><strong>Participants</strong></p> <p>Members of the Residency Training Committee, Royal College of Family Physicians of Thailand.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>The literature review and in-depth interviews identified 12 topics of SD that were required for family physicians. The first round of the Delphi survey was concluded by identifying 7 core topics with additional suggestions. In the second round, a consensus was obtained among the experienced educators regarding 7 core topics: 1) A definition of SD, 2) Principles of SD, 3) SDG, 4) A new concept of SD, 5) SD in the context of Thailand, 6) SD and principles of family medicine and 7) SD and family practice. These core topics were grouped within three main objectives and three sub-modules.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p> <p>An online <span>learning module of SD for family physicians was developed using a modified Delphi method. This included three sub-modules: 1) Concept and principles of SD, 2) SDG and 3) SD and its integration with family practice. This online learning module will provide additional resources for trainees of family medicine and Thai family physicians to expand their knowledge and perspectives of sustainable development.</span></p>
Data for: Tree symbioses sustain nitrogen fixation despite excess nitrogen supply
<p>Symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) is a key ecological process whose impact depends on the strategy of SNF regulation – the degree to which rates of SNF change in response to limitation by N vs. other resources. SNF that is obligate or exhibits incomplete down-regulation can result in excess N fixation, whereas a facultative SNF strategy does not. We hypothesized that tree-based SNF strategies differed by latitude (tropical vs temperate) and symbiotic type (actinorhizal vs rhizobial). Specifically, we expected tropical rhizobial symbioses to display strongly facultative SNF as an explanation for their success in low-latitude forests. In this study, we used <sup>15</sup>N isotope dilution field experiments in New York, Oregon, and Hawaii to determine SNF strategies in six N-fixing tree symbioses. Nitrogen fertilization with +10 and +15 g N m<sup>-2</sup> y<sup>-1</sup> for 4-5 years alleviated N limitation in all taxa, paving the way to determine SNF strategies. Contrary to our hypothesis, all six of the symbioses we studied sustained SNF even at high N. <em>Robinia</em> <em>pseudoacacia</em> (temperate rhizobial) fixed 91% of its N (%N<sub>dfa</sub>) in controls, compared to 64% and 59% in the +10 and +15 g N m<sup>-2</sup> y<sup>-1</sup> treatments. For <em>Alnus</em> <em>rubra</em> (temperate actinorhizal), %N<sub>dfa</sub> was 95%, 70%, and 60%. For the tropical species, %N<sub>dfa</sub> was 86%, 80%, and 82% for <em>Gliricidia</em> <em>sepium</em> (rhizobial); 79%, 69%, and 67% for <em>Casuarina</em> <em>equisetifolia</em> (actinorhizal); 91%, 42%, and 67% for <em>Acacia</em> <em>koa</em> (rhizobial), and 60%, 51%, and 19% for <em>Morella</em> <em>faya</em> (actinorhizal). Fertilization with phosphorus did not stimulate tree growth or SNF. These results suggest that the latitudinal abundance distribution of N-fixing trees is not caused by a shift in SNF strategy. They also help explain the excess N in many forests where N-fixers are common. In addition to influencing community dynamics and rates of nutrient cycling, excess N accumulation and export from sustained SNF may exacerbate water pollution and greenhouse gas fluxes.</p>
NRP "Cultural capital as a resource for the sustainable development of Latvia / CARD" Cultural Indicators Sub-project Dataset
<p>The aim of this research is to define what kind of key challenges and implemented solutions regarding the artist status are common in Europe, and how to develop a systematic approach for artist recognition and support in the Baltic context. Using qualitative research methodology (desk research, focus group discussions) the authors analyze the current theoretical and empirical discussion in the European Union member states and especially in the Baltic countries, highlighting different practices and experiences in defining the status and recognition of the artist, and support systems that adjust for specific needs in different countries.</p> <p>Full dataset contains tabular data (published here) and an audio recording of the focus group discussion, which is available under restricted access due to containing sensitive information (please contact luize.daksa@lka.edu.lv for further inquiries).</p>
Dataset: Global market drivers for sustainable cephalopod food systems
<p>1. Aquatic food systems are important contributors to global food security to satisfy an intensifying demand for protein-based diets, but global economic growth threatens marine systems. Cephalopod (octopus, squid, cuttlefish) fisheries can contribute to food security; however their sustainable exploitation requires understanding connections between nature's contributions to people (NCP), food system policies and human wellbeing.</p> <p>2. Our global literature review methodology examined what is known about cephalopod food systems, value chains and supply chains and associated market drivers. For analysis, we followed the IPBES conceptual framework to build a map of the links between cephalopod market drivers, NCP and good quality of life (GQL). Then we mapped cephalopod food system dynamics onto IPBES (in)direct drivers of change relating to catch, trade and consumption.</p> <p>3. This research contributes knowledge about key factors relating to cephalopods that can support transitions towards increased food security: the value of new aquatic food species; food safety and authenticity systems; place-based innovations and empowerment of communities; and consumer behaviour, lifestyle and motivations for better health and environmental sustainability along the food value chain. We outline requirements for a sustainable, equitable cephalopod food system policy landscape that values nature's contributions to people, considers UN Sustainable Development Goals and emphasises the role of seven overlapping IPBES (in)direct drivers of change: Economic, Governance, Sociocultural and Socio-psychological, Technological, Direct Exploitation, Natural Processes and Pollution. We present a novel market-based adaptation of the IPBES conceptual framework – our 'cephalopod food system framework', to represent how the cephalopod food system functions and how it can inform processes to improve sustainability and equity of the cephalopod food system.</p> <p>4. This synthesised knowledge provides the basis for diagnosing opportunities (e.g. high demand for products) and constraints (e.g. lack of data about how supply chain drivers link to cephalopod NCP) to be considered regarding the role of cephalopods in transformations towards a resilient and more diversified seafood production system. This social-ecological systems approach could apply to other wild harvest commodities with implications for diverse marine species and ecosystems and can inform those working to deliver marine and terrestrial food security while preserving biodiversity.</p>

<p><strong>The Role of Moderation Activities The influence of the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on the Planning of the Sustainability Report</strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>In order to show the consistency of agency theory as a theory to explain the influence of the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on Sustainability, this study will explore the role of moderating actions of the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on Sustainability. The firms that make up the demographic and research sample for this study, which uses a quantitative technique, are those that are included in the Jakarta Islamic Index for the years 2017 through 2021. the study's yearly financial report panel data. The data analysis methods employed in this study were robust, fixed effects, random effects, and ordinary least square regression. These methods are one of the regression solution approaches that may be used with a lot of flexibility in research that combines thoughts, ideas, and facts. The first study found that the audit committee had an effect on sustainability, whereas the second found that the board of directors has no effect.
