It Takes a Village to Build a Robot: An Empirical Study of The ROS Ecosystem - Replication Package
<p>Over the past eleven years, the Robot Operating System (ROS), has grown from a small research project into the most popular framework for robotics development. Composed of packages released on the Rosdistro package manager, ROS aims to simplify development by providing reusable libraries, tools and conventions for building a robot. Still, developing a complete robot is a difficult task that involves bridging many technical disciplines. Experts who create computer vision packages, for instance, may need to rely on software designed by mechanical engineers to implement motor control. As building a robot requires domain expertise in software, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as artificial intelligence and robotics, ROS faces knowledge based barriers to collaboration.</p> <p>In this paper, we examine how the necessity of domain specific knowledge impacts the open source collaboration model. We create a comprehensive corpus of package metadata and dependencies over three years in the ROS ecosystem, analyze how collaboration is structured, and study the dependency network evolution. We find that the most widely used ROS packages belong to a small cluster of foundational working groups (FWGs), each organized around a different domain in robotics. We show that the FWGs are growing at a slower rate than the rest of the ecosystem, in terms of their membership and number of packages, yet the number of dependencies on FWGs is increasing at a faster rate. In addition, we mined all ROS packages on GitHub, and showed that 82% rely exclusively on functionality provided by FWGs. Finally, we investigate these highly influential groups and describe the unique model of collaboration they support in ROS.</p>
Reduced biodiversity in modernised villages: a conflict between sustainable development goals
<p><span>1. Despite large conservation efforts to halt the loss of farmland biodiversity in Europe, negative population trends are still observed, especially for common species. Old villages and human settlements are biodiversity hotspots and important breeding habitats for farmland birds, but recent requirements for energy saving measures and improved living comfort have changed their architecture and habitats. Consequently, modernisation of villages may negatively affect bird diversity due to the loss of nesting and foraging sites.</span></p> <p><span>2. We investigated how the abundance and diversity of birds breeding in 104 Polish villages varied in relation to the degree of modernisation as estimated by the proportion of new and renovated homesteads. </span></p> <p><span>3. Abundance of building-nesting species, but not tree-nesting species, declined by 50% across a gradient of old to highly modernised villages. The contribution of new vs. renovated houses to the observed decline was similar.</span></p> <p><span>4. <i>Applications and synthesis</i>. Rural modernisation has a dramatic effect on abundance of birds nesting in/on buildings, thus may be an important and overlooked contributor to farmland bird population declines in Europe. Villages and rural properties may fall outside of current conservation policy as they are neither protected areas nor agricultural lands (where AES can be applied). Therefore, bird diversity declines in rural landscapes could continue unchecked. The observed conflict between sustainability goals such as increased building energy efficiency and biodiversity conservation suggests that sustainable rural development should better link modernisation with conservation measures, e.g. by constructing nesting sites when renovating and building new houses.</span></p>
Data from: Genetic structure in village dogs reveals a Central Asian domestication origin
Dogs were the first domesticated species, originating at least 15,000 y ago from Eurasian gray wolves. Dogs today consist primarily of two specialized groups—a diverse set of nearly 400 pure breeds and a far more populous group of free-ranging animals adapted to a human commensal lifestyle (village dogs). Village dogs are more genetically diverse and geographically widespread than purebred dogs making them vital for unraveling dog population history. Using a semicustom 185,805-marker genotyping array, we conducted a large-scale survey of autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y chromosome diversity in 4,676 purebred dogs from 161 breeds and 549 village dogs from 38 countries. Geographic structure shows both isolation and gene flow have shaped genetic diversity in village dog populations. Some populations (notably those in the Neotropics and the South Pacific) are almost completely derived from European stock, whereas others are clearly admixed between indigenous and European dogs. Importantly, many populations—including those of Vietnam, India, and Egypt—show minimal evidence of European admixture. These populations exhibit a clear gradient of short-range linkage disequilibrium consistent with a Central Asian domestication origin.
Data from: Analysis of genome-wide structure, diversity and fine mapping of Mendelian traits in traditional and village chickens
Extensive phenotypic variation is a common feature among village chickens found throughout much of the developing world, and in traditional chicken breeds that have been artificially selected for traits such as plumage variety. We present here an assessment of traditional and village chicken populations, for fine mapping of Mendelian traits using genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping while providing information on their genetic structure and diversity. Bayesian clustering analysis reveals two main genetic backgrounds in traditional breeds, Kenyan, Ethiopian and Chilean village chickens. Analysis of linkage disequilibrium (LD) reveals useful LD (r2greater than or equal to0.3) in both traditional and village chickens at pairwise marker distances of ~10 Kb; while haplotype block analysis indicates a median block size of 11–12 Kb. Association mapping yielded refined mapping intervals for duplex comb (Gga 2:38.55–38.89 Mb) and rose comb (Gga 7:18.41–22.09 Mb) phenotypes in traditional breeds. Combined mapping information from traditional breeds and Chilean village chicken allows the oocyan phenotype to be fine mapped to two small regions (Gga 1:67.25–67.28 Mb, Gga 1:67.28–67.32 Mb) totalling ~75 Kb. Mapping the unmapped earlobe pigmentation phenotype supports previous findings that the trait is sex-linked and polygenic. A critical assessment of the number of SNPs required to map simple traits indicate that between 90 and 110K SNPs are required for full genome-wide analysis of haplotype block structure/ancestry, and for association mapping in both traditional and village chickens. Our results demonstrate the importance and uniqueness of phenotypic diversity and genetic structure of traditional chicken breeds for fine-scale mapping of Mendelian traits in the species, with village chicken populations providing further opportunities to enhance mapping resolutions.

Study on the status of ground-water quality in villages of padra taluka
<p>The purpose of the research was to evaluate the quality of the groundwater in the Padra Taluka communities of Dudhwada, Piludra, and Karakhdi. Groundwater samples were taken at several sites across the research region and analyzed for a range of physicochemical characteristics. Groundwater in the study region was found to have significant concentrations of nitrates, fluoride, and total dissolved solids (TDS), among other contaminants. The report suggests taking action to fix the water quality problems found so that residents may drink safe water.</p>
