FIGURE 1. A. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a small, glabrous, shrubby species. Leaf margins are coarsely crenate or undulate-crenate into rounded, harmless teeth. The adaxial surfaces of the corolla lobes are bright crimson red. B. The stems of K. manginii are thin, rather weak, and often droop. The corolla tube and adaxial lobe surface vary slightly from orange-red to deep crimson red. As in K. blossfeldiana, the lobes are spreading. Both photographs: Gideon F. Smith.

FIGURE 1. Kalanchoe streptantha. A. The herbaceous, light green stems of this shrubby species can reach 30 mm in diameter and over 1 m in height. B. The midrib of the lanceolate-oblong to slightly obovate leaves is often prominent, especially when leaves are slightly desiccated. C. Leaf margins are more or less straight to slightly irregularly sinuate and carry evenly spaced purplish or brownish spots, especially abaxially (see also Fig. 1F). This inflorescence is sparse-flowered. D. The yellow flowers are quite large and usually distinctly red-veined on the inside and, to a lesser extent, on the outside of the corolla lobes. Flowers are pendent at anthesis, as shown in the photograph. The corolla lobes are apically apiculate. Scale marker = 20 mm. E. Once dry, the cream-coloured calyx tubes are persistent, with the papery remains of both the corolla and calyx enveloping the ripening follicles. This inflorescence is dense-flowered. F. The sepals are prominently fused and can cover up to ½ of the length of the corolla tube. Note the greyish black, hastate anthers between the corolla lobes. All photographs: Gideon F. Smith.

Permission was granted to Dr Laurence J. Dorr by FJKM to disassemble a framed collection of photographs of 19th century missionaries to obtain individual portraits for use in Dorr (1997). Dr Dorr kindly supplied the image to the author of this paper. C. Kalanchoe tomentosa is a sparsely- to many-leaved, entirely hairy, sparsely branched, small to medium-sized, terrestrial, succulent shrub that can reach a height of about 1 m. Note the hard, stiff aerial roots that often develop on the stem and branches. D. The hairy flowers of K. tomentosa are borne erect to erectly spreading to spreading, and are hairy throughout. Flowers are campanulate to sometimes very slightly urceolate, yellowish brown to greenish and often sometimes purple-infused. Large growing plants with leaves variously covered in a golden-bronze tomentum are marketed and sold under a range of monikers, some of which are likely trade designations only. The plants illustrated in A to C are generally available under K. beharensis 'Aureo-aeneus', although this is not an established cultivar name. The variant illustrated in B has entire leaf margins. The plant of K. beharensis illustrated in C is cultivated in the Shoenberg Temperate House in the Missouri Botanical Garden, St Louis, U.S.A. D–F. Cultivar names, or at least monikers presented as cultivar names, such as K. beharensis 'Brown Dwarf', K. beharensis 'Monstrose', K. beharensis 'Nana', and K. beharensis 'Curly', are generally applied to a range of small-growing, hairy variants of K. beharensis, some of which are illustrated here. FIGURE 2. Plants of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in the horticultural trade sometimes referred to as "var. feuerblüte Hort.", have brilliant red flowers borne on firm, erect peduncles. Jacobsen (1954: 819, 1986: 609) speculates that it might be a hybrid between K. blossfeldiana and K. glaucescens (Britten 1871: 393). One of the earliest-documented, artificially produced hybrids between representatives of K. subg. Kalanchoe and K. subg. Bryophyllum, i.e., across subgenus boundaries, were recorded by Resende (1956: 241–242) when he produced hybrids between K. blossfeldiana "var. feuerblüte Hort." [included in K. subg. Kalanchoe] and K. daigremontiana Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 128) [included in K. subg. Bryophyllum]. Photograph: Gideon F. Smith.
