Habitat corridors alter relative trophic position of fire ants

Habitat fragmentation disrupts species movement, leading to local extinctions and altered community structure. Habitat corridors, which connect isolated patches of habitat and facilitate movement between patches, provide a potential solution to these negative impacts. However, most studies to date have examined the movement of species alone without considering emergent effects on the community (e.g., altered trophic structure). We use large-scale, experimental landscapes and nitrogen stable isotopes ratios (delta-N-15) of a common generalist consumer (the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta) to determine how corridors affect trophic structure. Thus, because the fire ant is a species whose trophic position is flexible and whose diet typically reflects local prey availability, we assume that shifts in fire ants' trophic position between connected and isolated patches are likely to reflect shifts in patch trophic structure. We found that colonies in isolated patches had lower means and ranges of delta-N-15 than colonies in otherwise similar connected patches, suggesting that corridors may increase fire ants' trophic position and breadth, respectively. Previous work in our landscapes documented higher species richness of plants in connected than unconnected patches. Patch means of ant delta-N-15 were positively correlated with plant richness, suggesting that increased plant richness may influence the observed responses in fire ant delta-N-15. Together these results suggest that fragmentation may reduce trophic position and narrow trophic breadth of dietary generalists such as the fire ant. These shifts likely reflect an alteration of food webs in isolated patches. Our results suggest that corridors may be effective in preventing or reducing such alterations.

Where are the trees? Extent, configuration, and drivers of poor forest recovery 30 years after the 1988 Yellowstone Fires.

Postfire recovery of fire-adapted forests remains uncertain as climate and fire regimes continue to change. Areas of poor postfire tree regeneration following late-20th-century fires may reveal characteristics associated with increased vulnerability to forest decline. However, sufficient time must have elapsed and pre- and postfire forest cover must be compared to distinguish areas that have not recovered. We used remotely sensed data and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to detect areas of poor forest recovery across >250,000 ha of area burned as stand-replacing fire 30 years after the 1988 Yellowstone fires. We asked three questions: (1) What is the extent and configuration of sparse and reduced forest recovery? (2) How do vegetation characteristics compare between areas of sparse and reduced recovery vs. recovered forest? (3) What environmental characteristics explain the distribution and patch size of sparse and reduced recovery? We related postfire (2013-14) NDVI to field-measured stem density to establish an NDVI threshold of sparse tree regeneration, and we contrasted pre- (1986-87) and postfire (2018-19) NDVI as a proxy for pre- and postfire forest cover. Sparse and reduced forest recovery occupied ~41,000 ha across the burned area, about half of which was ≥150 m from ex situ seed sources. Patches of poor recovery were generally large, with ~13,400 ha in patches ≥50 ha and an area-weighted mean patch size of 97 ha. Vegetation was short (<2 m) in areas of sparse and reduced recovery and non-evergreen biomass was three times greater than in recovered forest. Sparse and reduced recovery was more likely at high elevations, on steep slopes, and far from ex situ seed sources, and patches were larger at high elevations and far from seed sources. Corridors promote fire via connectivity and edge effects

Landscape corridors, strips of habitat that connect otherwise isolated habitat patches, are commonly employed during management of fragmented landscapes. To date, most reported effects of corridors have been positive; however, there are long-standing concerns that corridors may have unintended consequences. Here, we address concerns over whether corridors promote propagation of disturbances such as fire. We collected data during prescribed fires in the world's largest and best replicated corridor experiment (Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA), six ca. 50-ha landscapes of open (shrubby/herbaceous) habitat within a pine plantation matrix, to test several mechanisms for how corridors might influence fire. Corridors altered patterns of fire temperature through a direct connectivity effect and an indirect edge effect. The connectivity effect was independent of fuel levels and was consistent with a hypothesized wind-driven "bellows effect." Edges, a consequence of corridor implementation, elevated leaf litter (fuel) input from matrix pine trees, which in turn increased fire temperatures. We found no evidence for corridors or edges impacting patterns of fire spread: plots across all landscape positions burned with similar probability. Impacts of edges and connectivity on fire temperature led to changes in vegetation: hotter-burning plots supported higher bunch grass cover during the field season after burning, suggesting implications for woody/herbaceous species coexistence. To our knowledge, this represents the first experimental evidence that corridors can modify landscape-scale patterns of fire intensity. Corridor impacts on fire should be carefully considered during landscape management, both in the context of how corridors connect or break distributions of fuels and the desired role of fire as a disturbance, which may range from a management tool to an agent to be suppressed. Dynamics of Chapman's goldenrod (Solidago odora var. chapmanii) with fire at Archbold Biological Station, 1991-2000

This dataset summarizes the dynamics of Chapman's goldenrod (Solidago odora var. chapmanii) at Archbold Biological Station from 1991-2000. The data were collected from 23 quadrats, each 1 meter square. Quadrats were located across the Station, mainly in southern ridge sandhill (hickory phase), also known as oak-hickory scrub. The quadrats have a complex fire history during the study, as summarized by six fire variables indicating the years of burns and the total number of burns for each quadrat. Monitoring in quadrats started at various times from 1991-1995, usually shortly after prescribed fires. Quadrats were visited annually in the late summer or fall (August except in September and October in 1991 and 1992, respectively). With each visit, we counted the number of stems and the number of flowering stems. We also measured the heights of each stem and provided the mean height in cm for each quadrat. Because this species is clonal, we do not consider the data as representing a particular number of genetic individuals. We did not include data in plots that had burned within the previous four months. We also collected data from excavations and from observations of herbivores; these data are not included in this dataset. We found that densities decreased following fire, that flowering was concentrated in the first two years after fire, and that repeated burns reproduced these patterns. Together with other data, we suggested that Chapman's goldenrod was unusual among Florida scrub plants in having three modes of post-fire recovery (resprouting, clonal growth, seedling recruitment) and that its life history was characterized by persistence between fires (as a persistent bud bank) and strong post-fire positive responses.

Demography of scrub plum (Prunus geniculata) at Carter Creek, Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, 2001-2013, in relation to fire and felling

At the Carter Creek unit of the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, we collected demographic data annually on scrub plum (Prunus geniculata), a federally endangered shrub. We initially selected 903 plants (tagged and GPS'd) distributed among 12 management units in February 2001, a minimum of 65 plants per management unit. We worked with United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) staff and a crew from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to impose three management treatments on a unit basis (4 replicate units) in 2001 (finishing in August): control, chain-saw felling of large oaks, and chain-saw felling followed by prescribed burns. The treatments also served as the basis for vegetation sampling and demographic research on other species (Rickey et al. 2013). Beginning in 2001 and continuing through 2008, we collected annual data (in February) on each marked plant, including survival status, life history stage, height, maximum crown diameter, and reproductive structures. We also scoured areas near plants for new seedlings. We subsampled plants from 2009-2012, and then re-censused all plants in 2013. We also noted fire severity in 2001, 2007, and 2009 in four categories for each plant. Analyses through 2007 (Menges and Weekley 2013) showed that scrub plum had extremely high annual survival (98%) but minimal seedling recruitment. Scrub plum had high survival in all four burn treatments, although severely burned plants were more likely to die. Fire benefited scrub plum as plants resprouted vigorously, increased stem numbers post-fire, and had higher flower production 2-3 years after fires. Between fires, plants increased in height and diameter but retained fewer stems. We concluded that chainsaw felling of oaks did not have strong effects on scrub plum and could be a useful management tool, but we also emphasized the primacy of fire as an ecological disturbance and management treatment in this sandhill ecosystem.
