Big in Japan, Zimbabwe or Brazil – global reach and national preferences for open access books

<p>When we consider the main differences in publication practices between the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and Science Technology and Mathematics (STM) there are two aspects that almost always get mentioned: the prominence of books and the role of local languages. Not surprisingly, the work of HSS researchers written in in other languages than English is more often linked to more regional concerns or a more regional community. Simply put, an author using Dutch will have a different audience in mind than an author writing in English.</p> <p>The OAPEN Library contains thousands of open access monographs in dozens of languages and sees global usage. While books in English are in the majority &ndash; over 60% of the collection &ndash; this still leaves a large collection of publications in other languages. If a global audience can freely choose from this collection, will there be a preference for global subjects or will more regional concerns take preference? This explorative research will look at the most popular books from 100 countries and try to determine the level of regional interest.</p> <p>We will examine the preference of global readers in a systematic manner. Based on the ten most downloaded books from 100 countries during a 12 month period , the focus on regional topics will be measured in two ways: the amount of books written in non-English languages, and the amount of English language books that mention the country.</p>

An open-access database of infectious disease transmission trees to explore superspreader epidemiology

Historically, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases have caused large, deadly, and expensive multinational outbreaks. Often outbreak investigations aim to identify who infected whom by reconstructing the outbreak transmission tree, which visualizes transmission between individuals as a network with nodes representing individuals and branches representing transmission from person to person. We compiled a database, called OutbreakTrees, of 382 published, standardized transmission trees consisting of 16 directly transmitted diseases ranging in size from 2 to 286 cases. For each tree and disease, we calculated several key statistics, such as tree size, average number of secondary infections, the dispersion parameter, and the proportion of cases considered superspreaders, and examined how these statistics varied over the course of each outbreak and under different assumptions about the completeness of outbreak investigations. We demonstrated the potential utility of the database through 2 short analyses addressing questions about superspreader epidemiology for a variety of diseases, including Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). First, we found that our transmission trees were consistent with theory predicting that intermediate dispersion parameters give rise to the highest proportion of cases causing superspreading events. Additionally, we investigated patterns in how superspreaders are infected. Across trees with more than 1 superspreader, we found preliminary support for the theory that superspreaders generate other superspreaders. In sum, our findings put the role of superspreading in COVID-19 transmission in perspective with that of other diseases and suggest an approach to further research regarding the generation of superspreaders. These data have been made openly available to encourage reuse and further scientific inquiry.

Data accessibility for conservation implications of genetic structure in the narrowest endemic quillwort from the Eastern Amazon

<p>The quillwort <em>Isoetes cangae</em> is a critically endangered species occurring in a single lake in Serra dos Carajás, Eastern Amazon. Low genetic diversity and small effective population sizes (N<sub>e</sub>) is expected for narrow endemic species (NES). Here, we evaluated genetic diversity, population structure, and N<sub>e</sub> of <em>I. cangae </em>to provide information for conservation programs. Conservation biology studies centered in a single‐species show some limitations but they are still useful considering the limited time and resources available for the protection of species at risk of extinction. Our analyses were based on 55 individuals collected from the Amendoim lake and 35,638 neutral SNPs. Our results indicated a single panmictic population, moderate levels of genetic diversity, and effective population size (N<sub>e</sub>) in the order of thousands, contrasting the expected for NES. Negative FIS values were also found, suggesting that <em>I. cangae</em> is not under risk of inbreeding depression. Our findings imply that <em>I. cangae </em>contains enough genetic diversity to ensure evolutionary potential, all individuals should be treated as one demographic unit.</p>

Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Open Access Compliance Monitoring 2021

<p><strong>I. Executive summary</strong></p> <p>The Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which is Austria&#39;s main funding organisation for basic research, encourages and helps all project leaders and project staff members to make their peer-reviewed research results freely available on the Internet. Any exceptions must be clearly indicated and justified. For projects that started after 1 January 2015, open access has been compulsory for all peer-reviewed publications. All principal investigators in FWF-funded projects are obliged to submit a final report within four months of completing their projects.</p> <p>In 2021, a total of 584 final reports were submitted to the FWF, 48 of which could not report any publications so far. The publications and other data mentioned in those reports are archived and analysed by the FWF. This report examines the state of compliance with open access requirements for peer-reviewed publications on the basis of final project reports submitted in the year 2021.</p> <p>Main findings:</p> <p>-A total of 7,025 publications were listed in the final project reports submitted in 2021.</p> <p>-Of those publications, 5,735 were conclusively identified as peer-reviewed.</p> <p>-Regarding compliance with the FWF&#39;s Open Access Policy, the analysis shows that 82% of the peer-reviewed publications listed in the final project reports submitted in 2021 were openly accessible (2015: 83%, 2016: 92%, 2017: 90%, 2018: 92%, 2019: 89%, 2020: 84%).</p> <p>-The most frequently chosen option was hybrid open access (39%). The share of gold open access was 23%, the share of green open access 20%, and no open access 18%.</p> <p>-The majority of peer-reviewed publications submitted were journal articles (85%), 86% of which were openly accessible.</p> <p>-The lowest rate of compliance with the FWF&#39;s Open Access Policy could be found in editions, contributions to edited volumes, and monographs (50%).</p> <p>-The absolute number of publications listed in final reports in 2021 included 403 publications that were mentioned several times in different projects; however, those repetitions did not ultimately affect the relative share of open access publications (81%).</p> <p>II. Bias</p> <p>Most of the publications were submitted to the FWF via a research documentation system (provided by &copy;Researchfish), in which FWF-funded researchers are able to enter and update their research data on an ongoing basis. The last check of the open access status was performed in March 2022. In some cases, the embargo period may have already expired, and publications labelled &lsquo;closed&rsquo; in the FWF&rsquo;s database may now be accessible through green open access.</p> <p>Whenever the status &lsquo;peer-reviewed&rsquo; could not be clearly identified according to the FWF&rsquo;s guidelines, the publications were classified as non-peer reviewed.</p> <p>Openly available non-peer reviewed publications were entered as &#39;openly available&rsquo;.</p>

Hybridization alters the shape of the genotypic fitness landscape, increasing access to novel fitness peaks during adaptive radiation

<p>Estimating the complex relationship between fitness and genotype or phenotype (i.e. the adaptive landscape) is one of the central goals of evolutionary biology. However, adaptive walks connecting genotypes to organismal fitness, speciation, and novel ecological niches are still poorly understood and processes for surmounting fitness valleys remain controversial. One outstanding system for addressing these connections is a recent adaptive radiation of ecologically and morphologically novel pupfishes (a generalist, molluscivore, and scale-eater) endemic to San Salvador Island, Bahamas. We leveraged whole-genome sequencing of 139 hybrids from two independent field fitness experiments to identify the genomic basis of fitness, estimate genotypic fitness networks, and measure the accessibility of adaptive walks on the fitness landscape. We identified 132 SNPs that were significantly associated with fitness in field enclosures. Six out of the 13 regions most strongly associated with fitness contained differentially expressed genes and fixed SNPs between trophic specialists; one gene (<em>mettl21e</em>) was also misexpressed in lab-reared hybrids, suggesting a potential intrinsic genetic incompatibility. We then constructed genotypic fitness networks from adaptive alleles and show that scale-eating specialists are the most isolated of the three species on these networks. Intriguingly, introgressed and<em> de novo</em> variants reduced fitness landscape ruggedness as compared to standing variation, increasing the accessibility of genotypic fitness paths from generalist to specialists. Our results suggest that adaptive introgression and <em>de novo</em> mutations alter the shape of the fitness landscape, providing key connections in adaptive walks circumventing fitness valleys and triggering the evolution of novelty during adaptive radiation.</p>

Data from: Access to resources buffers against effects of current reproduction on future ability to provide care in a burying beetle

<p>Studies investigating the trade-off between current and future reproduction often find that increased allocation to current reproduction is associated with a reduction in the number or quality of future offspring. In species that provide parental care, this effect on future offspring may be mediated through a reduced future ability to provide care. Here, we test this idea in the burying beetle <em>Nicrophorus vespilloides</em>, a species in which parents shift the cost of reproduction towards future offspring and provide elaborate parental care. We manipulated brood size to alter the costs females experienced in association with current reproduction and measured the level of parental care during a subsequent breeding attempt. Given that these beetles breed on carcasses of small vertebrates, it is important to consider confounding effects due to benefits associated with resource access during breeding. We therefore manipulated access to carrion and measured the level of parental care during a subsequent breeding attempt. We found that females provided the same level of care regardless of previous brood size and resource access, suggesting that neither affected future ability to provide care. This may reflect that parents feed on carrion during breeding, which may buffer against any costs of previous breeding attempts. Our results show that increased allocation to current reproduction is not necessarily associated with a reduction in future ability to provide care. Nevertheless, this may reflect unique aspects of our study system, and we encourage future work on systems where parents do not have access to a rich resource during breeding.</p>

Dataset: Ultra-Wideband Ranging Measurements Acquired With Three Different Platforms (Qorvo, TDSR, 3db Access)

<p>This dataset contains distance measurements acquired with three different ultra-wideband (UWB) platforms developed by Qorvo (DW3000), TDSR (P452A), and 3db Access (3DB6380C) at the same locations.</p> <p>The dataset accompanies the paper: &quot;Challenges in Platform-Independent UWB Ranging and Localization Systems&quot; by Laura Flueratoru, Elena Simona Lohan, Dragoș Niculescu, published in the 16th ACM Workshop on Wireless Network Testbeds, Experimental evaluation and Characterization (WiNTECH) 2022. If you find this dataset useful, please consider citing our paper.</p> <p>The dataset (<strong>uwb_multiple_platforms.zip</strong>) contains the following directories:</p> <ul> <li><strong>parallel_measurements</strong> -- The actual dataset, containing all the measurements acquired with the three UWB platforms at the same locations. This directory contains three subdirectories, one for each device.
