Data from: Ocean acidification induces biochemical and morphological changes in the calcification process of large benthic foraminifera

Large benthic foraminifera are significant contributors to sediment formation on coral reefs, yet they are vulnerable to ocean acidification. Here, we assessed the biochemical and morphological impacts of acidification on the calcification of Amphistegina lessonii and Marginopora vertebralis exposed to different pH conditions. We measured growth rates (surface area and buoyant weight) and Ca-ATPase and Mg-ATPase activities and calculated shell density using micro-computer tomography images. In A. lessonii, we detected a significant decrease in buoyant weight, a reduction in the density of inner skeletal chambers, and an increase of Ca-ATPase and Mg-ATPase activities at pH 7.6 when compared with ambient conditions of pH 8.1. By contrast, M. vertebralis showed an inhibition in Mg-ATPase activity under lowered pH, with growth rate and skeletal density remaining constant. While M. vertebralis is considered to be more sensitive than A. lessonii owing to its high-Mg-calcite skeleton, it appears to be less affected by changes in pH, based on the parameters assessed in this study. We suggest difference in biochemical pathways of calcification as the main factor influencing response to changes in pH levels, and that A. lessonii and M. vertebralis have the ability to regulate biochemical functions to cope with short-term increases in acidity.

Biochemical health profile of workers occupationally exposed to printing press inks in KP, Pakistan

<p><b>Background</b>: Printing press workers are occupationally exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals and solvents. Present study was designed to determine the biochemical health profile of printing press workers.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> Cross sectional study was performed in 50 printing press (male) workers (Exposed) and 20 Unexposed (male), age matched, individuals, who were not exposed to printing press environment but lived all around the printing press area. Non-fasting blood samples were collected, from both Exposed and Unexposed, for determining full blood counts, lipid profile, Uric acid and Creatinine.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Mean levels of cholesterol [Mean (SD) mg/dl: 213 (13.0) vs 146 (5.50), P=0.04], triglycerides [Mean (SD) mg/dl: 303 (16.9) vs 196 (7.13), P=0.03] and LDL [Mean (SD) mmol/l: 103 (3.32) vs 42.9 (2.57), P=0.01] were significantly higher in printing press workers than in Unexposed. Additionally, mean total leukocyte count and total lymphocytes, were significantly higher (Mean (SD): 8590 (830) vs. 7100 (542) per cmm, P = 0.04 and 44.8 (2.17) % vs. 33.1 (1.85) % respectively, P = 0.02) while mean neutrophil count was significantly lower (Mean (SD): 46.3 (1.97) % vs. 59.7 (1.88) % respectively, P= 0.03) in printing press workers than in Unexposed.</p> <p><b>Conclusion</b>: Exposure to various chemicals in inks may put printing press workers at risk of poor biochemical profile which is an important risk factor for developing non-communicable diseases.</p>

<p><span>Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a biophysical techniq</span><span>u<span>e used for non-destructive biochemical profiling of biological samples. It can provide comprehensive information about the total cellular biochemical profile of microbial cells. In this study, FTIR spectroscopy was used to perform biochemical characterization of twenty-nine bacterial strains isolated from the Antarctic meltwater ponds. The bacteria were grown on two forms of brain heart infusion (BHI) medium: agar at six different temperatures </span>(4, 10, 18, 25, 30, and 37 &deg;C) and on broth at 18 &deg;C. Multivariate data analysis approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were used to study the difference in biochemical profiles induced by the cultivation conditions.</span> <span>The observed results indicated a strong correlation between FTIR spectra and the phylogenetic relationships among the studied bacteria. The most accurate taxonomy-aligned clustering was achieved with bacteria cultivated on agar</span><span>. Cultivation on two forms of BHI medium provided biochemically different bacterial biomass. The impact of temperature on the total cellular biochemical profile of the studied bacteria was </span><span>species-specific</span><span>, however, similarly for all bacteria, lipid spectral region was the least affected while polysaccharide region was the most affected by different temperatures. <span>T</span>he biggest temperature-triggered changes of the cell chemistry were detected for bacteria with a wide temperature tolerance such <em><span>Pseudomonas lundensis </span></em><span>strains<em> </em>and<em> Acinetobacter lwoffii </em>BIM B-1558. </span></span></p>
