This dataset contains data from an ammonium uptake experiment conducted at the APEX Beta site in the BCEF. Data includes ammonium uptake of Carex aquatilis roots from porewater spiked with (NH4)2SO4 for 4 and 8 hours after excavation from thermokarst bogs. Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: Geochemical data from perched waters collected from boreholes on Gradient site during August-September 2019

In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems. Geochemical analysis of water perched on the permafrost table complements the overarching aim of this study by targeting the organic component transported laterally from the soils. The association between DOC and mineral elements in the waters perched on the permafrost table was determined. These mineral element-organic carbon associations must be accounted for when considering the stability of organic carbon transported laterally from the catchment.

Tree recruitment data for the Hubbard Brook Valley Plots, baseline data collected 1995 - 1998

The valley-wide plots are a grid of 431 sites along fifteen N–S transects established at 500-m intervals spanning the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. Multiple above- and below- ground attributes were measured between 1995 and 1998. This dataset includes tree recruitment data; soil data and other measurements are presented in separate datasets. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Fine Root Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1998 and 2013 collections

We restored calcium to soils of a forested watershed at Hubbard Brook and measured the response of fine root biomass fourteen years after treatment. Fine root samples were collected in Watershed 1 and the Bear Brook Watershed reference forest, located to the west of Watershed 6, in 1998 (pre-Ca treatment) and in 2013. In this northern hardwood forest fine root (< 1 mm diameter) biomass declined significantly in the Ca addition treatment relative to pretreatment and reference forest conditions. The decline was greatest in the high-elevation hardwood zone of the watershed where soils are thinnest and most base poor. In that zone fine roots were distributed more shallowly after treatment than for reference conditions. We suggest that relatively higher tree C allocation to roots contributes to depressed aboveground productivity in acidified northern hardwood forest ecosystems.

JUMP - Data collection - Part I: Jets from a Global Climate Model.

<p>We conduct in-depth analysis of statistical flow properties from Global Circulation Model that reproduce Saturn&#39;s macroturbulence, namely large-scale zonal winds. We use a high performance Global Climate Models (GCMs), named DYNAMICO, to model the atmospheric circulation of gas giants with appropriate physical parametrizations for Saturn&#39;s atmosphere. The high-resolution model DYNAMICO solves for 3D primitive equations of motion. We ran a Saturn simulation covering 15 Saturn years using the Saturn DYNAMICO GCM. Wind fields are output every 20 Saturn days at 32 pressure levels onto 1/2&deg; latitude-longitude grid maps. Details on this Saturn reference simulation are given in Spiga et al. (2020). In addition, to diagnose the relevant 3D dynamical mechanisms in Saturn&#39;s turbulent atmosphere, we run a set of four simulations using an idealized version of our Global Climate Model devoid of radiative transfer, with a well-defined Taylor-Green forcing and over several rotation rates (4, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 times Saturn&#39;s rotation rate). Here, we deliver a full data set, including velocity maps, at different pressure levels and time steps, from which it is possible to recompute the statistical analysis detailed in Cabanes et al. (2020). Geochemical data for fluids collected in Acoculco Geothermal Field

<p>The dataset <strong>CO<sub>2</sub>_flux_measurements_Acoculco&nbsp;</strong>contains data on CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes, coordinates (UTM), air temperature, atmospheric pressure measured in selected sites belonging to the Acoculco Geothermal Field: in particular, the areas named Lagunilla, Alcaparrosa, Los Azufres and also the area between them were investigated. CO<sub>2</sub> flux measurements were performed using the accumulation chamber method.</p> <p>The dataset&nbsp;<strong>Field_meas_Acoculco_waters</strong> reports the ID, coordinates (UTM), Altitude (m.a.s.l.), temperature, flow rate, pH, Electrical Conductivity and Dissolved Oxygen for water samples collected in the central sector of the Acoculco geothermal field, but also in other sectors located inside and outside the Acoculco caldera.&nbsp;Total depth is also included for samples collected from water wells.</p> <p>The dataset&nbsp;<strong>Chemical_isotopic_data_Acoculco_waters</strong> reports major and minor chemical components and stable isotopic composition for hydrogen and oxygen determined in collected water samples in Acoculco geothermal field. Calculated partial pressures (in bars and log<sub>10</sub>-value) and CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations of dissolved CO<sub>2</sub> were also included.</p> <p>The dataset&nbsp;<strong>Chemical_isotopic_data_Acoculco_gas </strong>reports chemical and isotopic data for collected&nbsp;samples from Los Azufres and Alcaparrosa natural gas manifestations.</p>

Collected data on early estimates of global fossil CO2 emissions

<p>This dataset collects together a number of early estimates made of global emissions of fossil CO2, starting with Arvid H&ouml;gbom in 1894. Microsoft Excel files for original data sources where these are time series, including images of the tables from the original sources, in addition to one CSV file of CO2 emissions from all sources. Sources that only reported emissions for a short period are not included in the Excel collection, but are included in the CSV file. In addition the original United Nations energy data used by several sources is included as UN1956.xlsx.</p>

Data from: Ant collective behavior is heritable and shaped by selection

Collective behaviors are widespread in nature and usually assumed to be strongly shaped by natural selection. However, the degree to which variation in collective behavior is heritable and has fitness consequences -- the two prerequisites for evolution by natural selection -- is largely unknown. We used a new pharaoh ant ( Monomorium pharaonis ) mapping population to estimate the heritability, genetic correlations, and fitness consequences of three collective behaviors (foraging, aggression, and exploration) as well as body size, sex ratio, and caste ratio. Heritability estimates for the collective behaviors were moderate, ranging from 0.17 to 0.32, but lower than our estimates for the heritability of caste ratio, sex ratio, and the body size of new workers, queens, and males. Moreover, variation among colonies in collective behaviors was phenotypically correlated, suggesting that selection may shape multiple colony collective behaviors simultaneously. Finally, we found evidence for directional selection that was similar in strength to estimates of selection in natural populations. Altogether, our study begins to elucidate the genetic architecture of collective behavior and is one of the first studies to demonstrate that it is shaped by selection.

Data from: Introduced bees (Osmia cornifrons) collect pollen from both coevolved and novel host-plant species within their family-level phylogenetic preferences

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Studying the pollen preferences of introduced bees allows us to investigate how species utilize host-plants when establishing in new environments. <i>Osmia cornifrons</i> is a solitary bee introduced into North America from East-Asia for pollination of crops in the Rosaceae. We investigated whether <i>O. cornifrons</i> 1) more frequently collected pollen from host-plant species they coevolved with from their geographic origin, or 2) prefer hosts-plant species of specific plant taxa independent of origin. To address this question, using pollen metabarcoding we examined the identity and relative abundance of pollen in larval provisions from nests located in different habitats with varying abundance of East-Asian and non-Asian plant species. Our results show that <i>O. cornifrons</i> disproportionately, yet not exclusively, collected pollen from their native range. Plants in the family Rosaceae were their most preferred pollen hosts, where they differentially collected species native to East-Asia, Europe, or North America depending on the landscape. Our results suggest that while <i>O. cornifrons</i> more frequently collect pollen of East-Asian origin, the collection of pollen from novel species within their phylogenetic familial affinities can facilitate pollinator establishment. This phylogenetic preference highlights the effectiveness of <i>O. cornifrons</i> as crop pollinators of a variety of Rosaceae crops from different geographic origins. Ourresults imply that globalization of non-native plant species may ease the naturalization of their coevolved pollinators outside of their native range. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

360-degree video recording of an outdoor camerawork training session for qualitative data collection

<p>In this equirectangular 360&deg; video clip, a recording of an outdoor camerawork training session is stitched together from the footage taken by a stereoscopic 360&deg; camera with eight lenses. To play the video and spatial sound correctly, use a digital video player that can play equirectangular videos with the YouTube ambiX First Order Ambisonic audio format, eg. VLC or PotPlayer. Please wear headphones.</p> <p>In the camerawork training session, all the participants are playing particular roles in the training session, and each carries a camera. In preparation for the real data collection with a guide, one person is pretending to be a nature guide. She carries a GoPro camera on a gimbal. There is an instructor, who is carrying a single lens 360&deg; camera on a raised extension pole with a separate ambisonic microphone. Two others are filming with a prosumer camcorder and a single lens 360&deg; camera on a lowered extension pole respectively. And a fifth person is filming with a stereoscopic 360&deg; camera and an independent ambisonic microphone on a monopod. In a nutshell, this is a typical team filming arrangement, in which the team needs to attentively yet silently coordinate their joint camerawork. Languages: Danish and English</p>

Data collected by fruit body– and DNA-based survey methods yield consistent species-to-species association networks in wood-inhabiting fungal communities

<p>Inferring interspecific interactions indirectly from community data is of central interest in community ecology. Data on species communities can be surveyed using different methods, each of which may differ in the amount and type of species detected, and thus produce varying information on interaction networks. Since fruit bodies reflect only a fraction of the woodinhabiting fungal diversity, there is an ongoing debate in fungal ecology on whether fruit body– based surveys are a valid method for studying fungal community dynamics compared to surveys based on DNA metabarcoding. In this paper, we focus on species-to-species associations and ask whether the associations inferred from data collected by fruit-body surveys reflect the ones found from data collected by DNA-based surveys. We estimate and compare the association networks resulting from different survey methods using a joint species distribution model. We recorded both raw and residual associations that respectively do not and do correct for the influence of the abiotic predictors when estimating the species-to-species associations. The analyses of the DNA data yielded a larger number of species-to-species associations than the analyses of the fruit body–based data as expected. Yet, we estimated unique associations also from the fruit-body data. Our results show that the directions of estimated residual associations were consistent between the data types, whereas the raw associations were much less consistent, highlighting the need to account for the influence of relevant environmental covariates when estimating association networks. We conclude that even though DNA-based survey methods are more informative about the total number of interacting species, fruit-body surveys are also an adequate method for inferring association networks in wood-inhabiting fungi. Since the DNA and fruit-body data carry on complementary information on fungal communities, the most comprehensive insights are obtained by combining the two survey methods.</p>

bar length and 13/64&rdquo; chain loop.<br> Tree height (incl. stump) was measured with a surveyor&#39;s tape measure, and GPS data were acquired from the centre of the stump using a Garmin GPSMAP 64st.<br> The stem (incl. stump) and crown were cut into manageable sections, and the mass of each section was measured via weighing using two Adam LHS 500 crane scales.<br> Mass measurements commenced immediately post-felling, requiring two, four, four and two days to complete measurement of CAX-H_T1 to CAX-H_T4 respectively.<br> Multiple discs (approx. 50mm thick) were also collected from each tree: at 1.3m and 25%, 50% and 75% the length of the stem, and up to 3x discs were taken from the mid-points of 1st, 2nd and 3rd order branches (totalling a minimum of 11 discs per tree).<br> Foliage/fruit samples were retained to confirm taxonomic identity at the Museu Paraense Em&iacute;lio Goeldi, Belem, Par&aacute;, Brazil.</p> <p>Laboratory measurements:</p> <p>All discs were reduced to a set of subsamples using a consistent approach: for any particular disc, they were cut as guided by parallel chords straddling above and below the major axis, each with approximate dimensions of 150mm x 50mm x 50mm (i.e., each set included periderm, phloem, cambium, xylem and pith tissues).<br> Mass and volume measurements were made on each subsample in a green and dry state.<br> Subsamples were considered in a green state after soaking for 48 hours, and a dry state once a constant mass had been attained whilst drying in an oven at 105 degree Celsius.<br> Mass was measured using an Adam NBL4602i Nimbus Precision balance, and volume measurements were made on the same balance via Archimedes&rsquo;
