Data from: An integrative skeletal and paleogenomic analysis of stature variation suggests relatively reduced health for early European farmers
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Human culture, biology, and health were shaped dramatically by the onset of agriculture ~12,000 years before present (BP). This shift is hypothesized to have resulted in increased individual fitness and population growth as evidenced by archaeological and population genomic data alongside a decline in physiological health as inferred from skeletal remains. Here, we consider osteological and ancient DNA data from the same prehistoric individuals to study human stature variation as a proxy for health across a transition to agriculture. Specifically, we compared 'predicted' genetic contributions to height from paleogenomic data and 'achieved' adult osteological height estimated from lo<span>ng bone measurements for 167 individuals across Europe spanning the Upper Paleolithic to Iron Age (~38,000-2,400 BP). We found that individuals from the Neolithic were shorter than expected (given their individual polygenic height scores) by an average of -3.82 cm relative to individuals from the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic (P=0.040) and -2.21 cm shorter relative to post-Neolithic individuals (P=0.068, with osteological vs. expected stature steadily increasing across the Copper (+1.95 cm relative to the Neolithic), Bronze (+2.70 cm), and Iron (+3.27 cm) Ages. These results were attenuated when we additionally accounted for genome-wide genetic ancestry variation, for example with Neolithic individuals -2.82 cm shorter than expected on average relative to pre-Neolithic individuals (P=0.120). We also incorporated observations of paleopathological indicators of non-specific stress that can persist from childhood to adulthood in skeletal remains into our model. Overall, our work highlights the potential of integrating disparate datasets to explore proxies of health in prehistory.</span></span></p>

Data from: Health trajectories reveal the dynamic contributions of host genetic resistance and tolerance to infection outcome
Resistance and tolerance are two alternative strategies hosts can adopt to survive infections. Both strategies may be genetically controlled. To date, the relative contribution of resistance and tolerance to infection outcome is poorly understood. A bioluminescent Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) infection challenge model on four genetically diverse mouse strains was used to study the genetic determination and dynamic contributions of host resistance and tolerance to listeriosis, a serious food-borne infectious disease in humans. Conventional statistical analyses revealed significant genetic variation in both resistance and tolerance, but could not capture the time-dependent relative importance of either strategy. These limitations were overcome by the development of novel statistical tools to analyse individual infection trajectories portraying simultaneous changes in infection severity and health. Based on these tools, early expression of resistance followed later by expression of tolerance, emerged as important hallmarks for surviving Lm infections. Trajectory analysis further revealed that survivors and non-survivors follow distinct infection paths, which are also genetically determined, and provided new survival thresholds as objective endpoints in infection experiments. Future studies may use trajectories as novel traits for mapping and identifying genes that control infection dynamics and outcome. A Matlab script for user-friendly trajectory analysis is provided.
Data from: The impact of autotrophic versus heterotrophic nutritional pathways on colony health and wound recovery in corals
For animals that harbor photosynthetic symbionts within their tissues, such as corals, the different relative contributions of autotrophy versus heterotrophy to organismal energetic requirements have direct impacts on fitness. This is especially true for facultatively symbiotic corals, where the balance between host-caught and symbiont-produced energy can be altered substantially to meet the variable demands of a shifting environment. In this study, we utilized a temperate coral-algal system (the northern star coral, Astrangia poculata, and its photosynthetic endosymiont, Symbiodinium psygmophilum) to explore the impacts of nutritional sourcing on the host's health and ability to regenerate experimentally excised polyps. For fed and starved colonies, wound healing and total colony tissue cover were differentially impacted by heterotrophy versus autotrophy. There was an additive impact of positive nutritional and symbiotic states on a coral's ability to initiate healing, but a greater influence of symbiont state on the recovery of lost tissue at the lesion site and complete polyp regeneration. On the other hand, regardless of symbiont state, fed corals maintained a higher overall colony tissue cover, which also enabled more active host behavior (polyp extension) and endosymbiont behavior (photosynthetic ability of Symbiondinium). Overall, we determined that the impact of nutritional state and symbiotic state varied between biological functions, suggesting a diversity in energetic sourcing for each of these processes.
Data from: Gene transcription in sea otters (Enhydra lutris): development of a diagnostic tool for sea otter and ecosystem health
Gene transcription analysis for diagnosing or monitoring wildlife health requires the ability to distinguish pathophysiological change from natural variation. Herein we describe methodology for the development of quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays to measure differential transcript levels of multiple immune-function genes in the sea otter (Enhydra lutris); sea otter specific, qPCR primer sequences for the genes of interest are defined. We establish a "reference" range of transcripts for each gene in a group of clinically healthy captive and free-ranging sea otters. The 10 genes of interest represent multiple physiological systems that play a role in immuno-modulation, inflammation, cell protection, tumor suppression, cellular stress-response, xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, antioxidant enzymes, and cell-cell adhesion. The cycle threshold (CT) measures for most genes were normally distributed; the complement cytolysis inhibitor was the exception. The relative enumeration of multiple gene transcripts in simple peripheral blood samples expands the diagnostic capability currently available to assess the health of sea otters in situ and provides a better understanding of the state of their environment.
Health care-related economic burden of polycystic ovary syndrome in the United States: Pregnancy-related and long-term health consequences - supplemental data
<p><b>Context: </b>Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder of reproductive-aged women, affecting approximately 5-20% of women of reproductive age. Data from: Socioeconomic status effects on health vary between rural and urban Turkana
<p>Background and objectives: Understanding the social determinants of health is a major goal in evolutionary biology and human health research. Low socioeconomic status (often operationalized as absolute material wealth) is consistently associated with chronic stress, poor health, and premature death in high income countries. However, the degree to which wealth gradients in health are universal<span>—</span>or are instead made even steeper under contemporary, post-industrial conditions<span>—</span>remains poorly understood.</p> <p>Methodology: We quantified absolute material wealth and several health outcomes among a population of traditional pastoralists, the Turkana of northwest Kenya, who are currently transitioning toward a more urban, market-integrated lifestyle. We assessed whether wealth associations with health differed in subsistence-level versus urban contexts. We also explored the causes and consequences of wealth-health associations by measuring serum cortisol, potential sociobehavioral mediators in early life and adulthood, and adult reproductive success (number of surviving offspring).</p> <p>Results: Higher socioeconomic status and greater material wealth predicts better self-reported health and more offspring in traditional pastoralist Turkana, but worse cardiometabolic health and fewer offspring in urban Turkana. We do not find robust evidence for either direct biological mediators (i.e., cortisol) or indirect sociobehavioral mediators (e.g., adult diet or health behaviors, early life experiences) of wealth-health relationships in either context.</p> <p>Conclusions and implications: While social gradients in health are well-established across a variety of primate species, and in humans, across a variety of socioecological contexts, we show that the relationship between wealth and health can vary within a single population. Our findings emphasize that changes in economic and societal circumstances may directly alter how, why, and under what conditions socioeconomic status is predictive of health.</p>
Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum (Dataset)
<p>This repository contains de-identified evaluation data collected as part of the Ethical Considerations of Data: A Curriculum for Health Sciences Librarians pilot as well as the data collection instrument used.</p> <p>These files are related to a forthcoming JMLA Case Study titled Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum. </p> <p><strong>Paper Abstract</strong>: <br> Three medical librarians developed a pilot curriculum designed to address perceived gaps in librarian training in regards to data ethics. One of the team members had additional academic training in ethics and bioethics, which helped to provide an intellectual foundation for this project. Our three-module class aimed to provide students with an overview of major ethical frameworks, skills to apply those frameworks to data issues, and an exploration of ethical considerations and challenges faced in libraries. Participants from library schools and professional library organizations were invited to apply. Twenty-four LIS professionals and students attended the Zoom-based class and shared their thoughts and attitudes by means of a survey after each session and in a focus group after the conclusion of the class.</p>
