Data from: Numerical biomechanics modelling of indirect mitral annuloplasty treatments for functional mitral regurgitation

Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is a common valvular heart disease where an improper closure leads to leakage from the left ventricle into the left atrium. There is a need for less-invasive treatments such as percutaneous repairs for a large inoperable patient population. The aim of this study is to compare several indirect mitral annuloplasty (IMA) percutaneous repair techniques by finite element analyses. Two types of generic IMA devices were considered, based on coronary sinus vein shortening (IMA-CS) to reduce the annulus perimeter and based on shortening of the anterior-posterior diameter (IMA-AP). The disease, its treatments, and the heart function post-repair were modelled by modifying the living heart human model (Dassault Systèmes). A functional MR pathology that represents ischemic MR was generated and the IMA treatments were simulated in it, followed by heart function simulations with the devices and leakage quantification from blood flow simulations. All treatments were able to reduce leakage and the IMA-AP device achieved better sealing and there was a correlation between the IMA-CS device length and the reduction in leakage. The results of this study can help in bringing IMA-AP to market, expand the use of IMA devices, and help optimize future designs of such devices.

Experimental and numerical investigation of the surface-modified treatment and aerodynamic performance of a ducted-fan impeller

A ducted fan is a potential solution to improve the dynamic performance of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The impeller of the ducted fan is the most critical plastic part. Compared with the injection molding process, the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process has a lower cost and shorter cycle time, but its roughness and lift performance are undesirable. Based on the hydrophobic surface treatment and the related performance research of the ducted fan impeller, this research aimed to improve the anti-impedance properties. Then, the modified surface of the impeller was built based on mussel-inspired mechanisms and the chemical surface-coating process of fan products. Experiments were conducted using a scanning electron microscope with an ener-gy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy system (SEM-EDS), laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and a UAV dynamic test platform. The experimental results show that the coating resulted in reduced surface roughness for injection molding and FDM molding, and the maximum lift of the impellers manufactured by the injection molding and FDM methods was increased by 3.3% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, the effect on the integrity of this coating process on FDM was significantly better than on the injection molding. The numerical analysis of the aerodynamic performance of the impeller with different roughness reveals the mechanism by which the surface treatment affects the blade effectiveness. The CFD results show that reducing the roughness led to less low-energy fluid in the flow channel and reduced the turbulent pulsation dissipation. In addition, the reduction in the blade's surface roughness decreased the boundary layer thickness and the boundary layer velocity. Thus, the aerodynamic performance of the impeller was optimized.

ESM of determination of transdermal rate of metallic microneedle array through impedance measurements-based numerical check screening algorithm

Microneedle systems have been widely used in health monitoring, painless drug delivery, and medical cosmetology. Although many studies on microneedle materials, structures, and applications have been conducted, the applications of microneedles often suffered from issues of inconsistent penetration rates due to the complication of skin-microneedle interface. In this study, we demonstrated a methodology of determination of transdermal rate of metallic microneedle array through impedance measurements-based numerical check screening algorithm. Metallic sheet microneedle array sensors with different sizes were fabricated to evaluate different transdermal rates. In vitro sensing of hydrogen peroxide confirmed the effect of transdermal rate on the sensing outcomes. A FEM simulation model of a microneedle array revealed the monotonous relation between the transdermal state and test current. Accordingly, two methods were first derived to calculate the transdermal rate from the test current. First, an exact logic method provided the number of unpenetrated tips per sheet, but it required more rigorous testing results. Second, a fuzzy logic method provided an approximate transdermal rate on adjacent areas, being more applicable and robust to errors. Real-time transdermal rate estimation may be essential for improving the performance of microneedle systems, and this study provides various fundaments toward that goal.
