Sustaining Cities, Naturally Webinar: Education Session - Bioblitz - Citizen science
<p>Poorly planned urbanisation can lead to societal challenges as social deprivation, climate change, deteriorating health and increasing pressure on urban nature. Urban ecosystem restoration can contribute to lessen these challenges, e.g. through implementing nature-based solutions (NBS). </p> <p>This pitch was made as part of the online webinar ‘Sustaining cities, Naturally: Urban ecosystem restoration in Europe, China and Latin America’, which took place as an official side-event of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2022 on 13th and 14th October 2023. The webinar was jointly organised by the projects: INTERLACE, CONEXUS, Regreen and CLEARING HOUSE. </p> <p>The webinar illustrated how Horizon 2020 projects support international cooperation in knowledge creation and knowledge exchange between local authorities and researchers to promote urban ecosystem restoration in Europe, China and Latin America and brought together cities, regions and local authorities, city network representatives, policy makers, researchers, civil society and experts on nature-based solutions and urban ecosystem restoration from Europe, China and Latin America. </p>

1 PREHEALING: Design of concrete precast elements incorporating sustainable strategies for self-healing to increase their service life. Material characterization
<p>This project deals with the analysis of the performance of concrete with internal curing aggregates (IC), low clinker cementitious materials and steel fibres, to be used in real applications in the field of precast industry.</p> <p>The low clinker cementitious material will be composed of clinker (C), metakaolin (MK) and limestone filler (LF) as powder material. In order to promote the sustainability of these products, a sustainable powder (SP) obtained from wood ash will be included. In addition, aggregates from coal bottom ash (CBA) will be used as internal curing water reservoirs.</p> <p>This section includes the characterization of these materials providing their main properties as particle size distribution, density or absorption, among others</p>
Glutathione and neodiosmin feedback sustain plant immunity
<p>Plants have evolved a two-layer immune system comprising pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI) that is activated in response to pathogen invasion. Microbial patterns and pathogen effectors can be recognized by surface-localized pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and intracellularly localized nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs) to trigger PTI and ETI responses, respectively. At present, the metabolites activated by PTI and ETI and their roles and signalling pathways in plant immunity are not well understood. In this study, metabolomic analysis showed that ETI and PTI induced various flavonoids and amino acids and their derivatives in plants. Interestingly, both glutathione and neodiosmin content were specifically up-regulated by ETI and PTI, respectively, which significantly enhanced plant immunity. Further studies showed that glutathione and neodiosmin failed to induce a plant immune response in which PRRs/co-receptors were mutated. In addition, glutathione-reduced mutant gsh1 analysis showed that GSH1 is also required for PTI and ETI. Finally, we propose a model in which glutathione and neodiosmin are considered signature metabolites induced in the process of ETI and PTI activation in plants and further continuous enhancement of plant immunity in which PRRs/co-receptors are needed. This model is beneficial for an in-depth understanding of the closed-loop mode of the positive feedback regulation of PTI and ETI signals at the metabolic level.</p>
New_Korespondensi The Role of Moderation Activities The Influence of The Audit Committee And The Board Of Directors on The Planning of The Sustainability Report
<p><strong>Abstract: </strong>In order to show the consistency of agency theory as a theory to explain the influence of the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on Sustainability, this study will explore the role of moderating actions of the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on Sustainability. The firms that make up the demographic and research sample for this study, which uses a quantitative technique, are those that are included in the Jakarta Islamic Index for the years 2017 through 2021. the study's yearly financial report panel data. The data analysis methods employed in this study were robust, fixed effects, random effects, and ordinary least square regression. These methods are one of the regression solution approaches that may be used with a lot of flexibility in research that combines thoughts, ideas, and facts. The first study found that the audit committee had an effect on sustainability, whereas the second found that the board of directors has no effect. Survey data of an integrative evaluation framework for assessing the sustainability of different types of urban agriculture
<p>In this dataset we present core data of an integrative evaluation framework for assessing the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of urban agriculture. The multi-criteria analysis is conducted by an Analytic Hierarchy Process and a participatory approach. The data integrate the selection and weighting of sub-criteria based on two online surveys:</p> <p>1) Survey 1: The selection of suitable sub-criteria for assessing the sustainability of urban agriculture was done by European scientific experts.</p> <p>2) Survey 2: The weighting of the selected sub-criteria was done on the example of vertical farming and community supported agriculture. Low-Cost Sustainable Engineered Geopolymer Composites (EGCs) for Repair and New Construction of Transportation Infrastructure
<p>This study evaluated the use of cost-effective alternative materials in the formulation of novel low-cost Engineered Geopolymer Composite (EGC) materials for repair and new construction of transportation infrastructure in Region 6. Previous studies and reports have shown that EGCs have excellent mechanical properties, which makes them an eco-friendly and more sustainable alternative to Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs). However, the mass adoption of these emerging composites is expected to be hindered by their cost, which is mainly driven by the use of PVA reinforcing fibers, silica fume (SF), and manufactured microsilica sand (MS). To address this key shortcoming, novel low-cost EGC materials for repair and new construction of transportation infrastructure in Region 6 were developed by: (1) metakaolin (MK) and fly ash (FA) as replacements of commonly used SF for GP binders; (2) low-cost PP fiber, PVA fiber, and hybrid systems of PP and PVA fiber; and (3) natural sand instead of commonly used manufactured MS. The MK-FA GP binders were tested for compressive strength and characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), while the MK-FA GP composites were tested for workability, compressive strength, and uniaxial tensile strength (UTT). Based on the experimental findings, it was concluded that 20-40 wt% of FA replacement was the optimal range for Na-based MK-FA GP with the strength values of ~12-14 MPa, while 50 wt% of FA replacement had the highest strength for K-based MK-FA GP of 17.2 MPa at 90-day. For composites, the mortar with the highest compressive strength reached a value of 10.6 MPa with 45% of river sand, and with 4 wt% SF and 1.5% PVA+0.25% PP fibers, it reached 21 MPa as a fiber-reinforced composite at 28-day. The composite with 10 wt% SF and 1.75% PE had the highest UTT of 3.97 MPa and a strain capacity of 1.78%. All the slant shear test specimens meet the 28-day shear bond strength requirement according to ASTM C882.</p>

<p>The qualitative mixed-method intervention study, grounded in content analysis and comparative methodology, reveals that incorporating SDGs into teacher training programmes is key since there is a significant direct impact on society. The objective was firstly to create an SDG-based didactic proposal including inquiry-based learning as its pedagogical approach for developing critical thinking. Secondly, to study its effect on participants regarding raising awareness of SDGs and their projection to society as future teachers.</p>
Evaluation of Fresh and Hardened Properties of 3D-Printed Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) Designed for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure Systems
<p>3D concrete printing is a cutting-edge construction technique that has the potential to revolutionize the construction industry due to cost-saving in terms of labor and formwork costs, efficiency in construction, lower safety-related risks, and a higher degree of automation. However, several issues still make its adoption relatively slower on a large scale. Engineered cementitious composites (ECC), a class of ultra-high-strength concrete, can be a potential solution to some problems, such as reinforcement and durability. The preliminary phase of a Tran SET project focused on the design of 3D printable ECC, considering the concrete mix design proportions and their potential effects on fresh and hardened properties to achieve an optimized printable ECC mix. The type and content of various concrete ingredients such as cement, admixtures, aggregates, and fibers have considerable influence on the several properties in the fresh and hardened state. The replacement levels for cement were 0%, 50%, and 75% for mineral admixture, 10% for silica fume, and 0.4% for nano-clay by cement mass. Locally available fine aggregates were also used at 25% and 40% by mass of binder. In addition, the influence of fiber types and contents was also investigated. Two types of fibers, polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, were used at different levels, such as 0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% of the total volume of the mix. Moreover, four mixes, including FA50-MC, FA40SF10-MC, S50-MC, and FA40MK10-MC, were evaluated in terms of mechanical performance (flexural strength and direct tensile strength). The flowability of the ECC mixes was reduced with the incorporation of slag, metakaolin, higher aggregate content, and PE fibers. The 2% of both PVA and PE fibers had a reduction in compressive strength as compared to the low fiber content. Moreover, the PE-ECC exhibited superior tensile ductility as compared to the PVA-ECC due to the more fiber bridging by the PE fibers at the crack interface.</p>
EnergyPROSPECTS Energy Citizenship Factsheet Series, Part 8: Aspects of ENCI III.: Towards environmental sustainability
<p>This document is Part 8 of the EnergyPROSPECTS Factsheet Series. We have created the Series to publish the results of a mapping of energy citizenship in Europe, along with the first stage of our analysis of the respective data. The EnergyPROSPECTS consortium mapped 596 cases of energy citizenship (ENCI) between November 2020 and May 2021 using desk research, collecting data on many aspects of the cases. Although the analysis is a work in progress, we believe it is important to share our data and, through doing this, contribute to the understanding of energy citizenship in Europe.</p> <p>EnergyPROSPECTS (PROactive Strategies and Policies for Energy Citizenship Transformation), a H2020 project between 2021-2024, works with a critical understanding of energy citizenship that is grounded in state-of-the-art social sciences and humanities (SSH) insights.</p>
Raw data: Potential of different common (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and Tartary (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) buckwheat accessions to sustainably manage surrounding weeds
<p>Twenty-nine accessions of two buckwheat species (<em>Fagopyrum esculentum</em> Moench (common buckwheat) and <em>Fagopyrum tataricum</em> (L.) Gaertn. (Tartary buckwheat) were evaluated for their allelopathic potential against two resistant weeds, i.e. the monocot <em>Lolium rigidum</em> Gaud. and the dicot <em>Portulaca oleracea</em> L. The bulking use of synthetic herbicides and their consequent contamination of the environment and resulting increment of resistant weeds, imminently requires a solution to achieve sustainable weed management without the use of chemical inputs. The results obtained in this study suggest that buckwheat accessions can sustainably manage weeds through plant interference as competition or allelopathy. This research showed that accessions differ in their potential for sustainably manage both weeds, with <em>F. esculentum</em> accessions being more effective against <em>L. rigidum</em> and <em>F. tataricum</em> accessions against both, monocot and dicot weeds. The chemical profile of buckwheat accessions was evaluated to know the content of polyphenols in common and Tartary buckwheat accessions and to know more about their ability to sustainably manage weeds. Differences in the chemical profile between the two buckwheat species were clear. While common buckwheat accessions showed more orientin, vitexin and hyperoside, Tartary buckwheat accessions had higher amounts of rutin, quercetin and kaempferol. We propose that the screening and selection of accessions with strong polyphenol content and vigorous growth can be a step towards organic farming due to its relation to the weed management.</p>

Data from: Sustained neurotrophin-3 delivery from hyaluronic acid hydrogels for neural tissue regeneration
<p>The goal of this work was to design a polymer-based platform capable of localized, long-term delivery of biologically active neurotropic factors using an affinity-based approach. Here, we synthesized hyaluronic acid-methylfuran (HA-mF) hydrogels that provide sustained, affinity-based release of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), a growth factor that promotes axon growth for 28 days. A Diels-Alder crosslinking reaction between HA-mF and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-dimaleimide occurs within 15 minutes under physiological conditions, resulting in injectable hydrogels that can be polymerized in the presence of cells and growth factors. We also tuned the hydrogel's storage modulus to match that of native rat spinal cord tissue, providing a platform not only for localized drug delivery but also a suitable vehicle for cellular transplantation. The NT-3 released from the HAmF hydrogels remains bioactive for at least 14 days, promoting axonal growth from primary sensory neurons as well as stem cell-derived V2a interneurons and motoneurons <em>in vitro</em>. The hydrogels also supported cell growth allowing for 3-dimensional axonal extensions within the scaffold matrix. Here we confirm the protective role of HA-mF on matrix-bound NT-3 activity and show that these hydrogels are an excellent platform for drug delivery for neural applications.</p>
Archaeology demonstrates sustainable Ancestral Coast Salish salmon stewardship over thousands of years pre-contact
<p><span>Salmon are an essential component of the ecosystem in Tsleil-Waututh Nation's traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory, centred on present-day Burrard Inlet, BC, Canada</span><span>, where Tsleil-Waututh people have been harvesting salmon, along with a wide variety of other fishes, for millennia. Tsleil-Waututh Nation is an ancestral Coast Salish community that has called the Inlet home since time immemorial. This research assesses the continuity and sustainability of the salmon fishery at təmtəmíxʷtən, an ancestral Tsleil-Waututh settlement in the Inlet, over thousands of years before European contact (1792 CE). We apply Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis to 245 archaeological salmon vertebrae to identify the species that were harvested by the Tsleil-Waututh community that lived at təmtəmíxʷtən. The results demonstrate that Tsleil-Waututh communities consistently and preferentially fished for chum salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus</em> <em>keta</em>) over the period of almost 3,000 years. The consistent abundance indicates a sustainable chum salmon fishery over that time and a strong salmon-to-people relationship through generations. This research supports Tsleil-Waututh Nation's stewardship obligations under their ancestral legal principles to maintain conditions that uphold the Nation's way of life.</span></p>
