SGS-LTER CO2 Elevation Study: Percent sand, silt & clay from each block and treatment of the Open Top Chambers on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1997 - 2001
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Additional information and referenced materials can be found: http://hdl.handle.net/10217/82454. Soil cores, divided at 7 depths, from the shortgrass steppe Open Top Chamber experiment were analyzed for percent sand, silt and clay. It was found that soils were fairly consistent across treatments. This research was conducted at the Central Plains Experimental Range, near Nunn, CO; lat.40degrees 40 minutes N; long. 104 degrees 45 minutes W in the shortgrass steppe region of NE Colorado, USA and as a collaboration between SGS-LTER and USDA-ARS researchers.
Deformation of the clay layer and Fluxes at the bottom of the clay layer
<p>A physical model test has been carried out to study the groundwater dynamics, water balance, and deformation characteristics of the aquitard in response to an abrupt hydraulic head decline in the adjacent confined aquifer. The hydraulic head in the clay layer is initially constant. The hydraulic head in the lower sand layer declines suddenly by <i>φ</i> at the beginning and then remains unchanged during testing. We measured the drainage flux at the bottom of the aquifer and the subsidence of the clay layer.This supporting information document provides: (1)Supplementary Table 1 (Table S1), which presents time series data of the deformation of the clay layer (mm); (2) Supplementary Table 2 (Table S2), which gives time series data of the fluxes at the bottom of the clay layer (cm<sup>3</sup>/s).</p>

Data from: Surface and subsurface phosphorus discharge from a clay soil in a 9-year study comparing no-till and plowing
No-till as a water protection measure is highly efficient in controlling erosion and particulate phosphorus (PP) loss, but tends to increase dissolved reactive P (DRP) concentrations in runoff water. In a 9-year field study on a clay soil in SW Finland, the effects of no-till and autumn plowing on surface runoff and subsurface drainage water quality were compared. The site had 2% slope and was under spring cereal cropping, with approximately replacement fertilizer P rates. Vertical stratification of soil test P that had developed during a preceding 6-year grass ley was undone by plowing, but continued to develop under no-till. During the 9-yr study period, no-till soil had 27% lower cumulative total P losses than plowed soil (10.0 vs. 13.7 kg TP ha-1). Concentrations and losses of PP were clearly lower under no-till than plowing (5.6 vs. 12.3 kg PP ha-1), but DRP loss showed the opposite trend (4.3 vs. 1.4 kg DRP ha-1). There was an increasing trend in subsurface drainflow DRP concentration under no-till, possibly because of development of a conductive pore structure from soil surface to drain depth. The potential benefit of no-till in water protection depends on how much of the PP transported to water is transformed into a bioavailable form and used by aquatic organisms. The beneficial effect of no-till in controlling P induced eutrophication at the study site would only be realized if the bioavailable share of PP exceeds 43%. Otherwise no-till would not be an efficient eutrophication control measure at this site.

Clay Idol, Anta Grande do Zambujeiro
Small fragment of a clay idol in the form of a feline from the archaeological works carried out in the twentieth century in the megalithic monument of Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. The fragment only allows observing the head, neck and a small part of the body. This piece is dated between the Middle and Final Neolithic (4000-3000 BC). Observation of 22Na+ - Diffusion in Opalinus Clay using Positron Emission Tomography (GeoPET)
<p>Clay rocks are one potential host material for nuclear waste deposits, because of their extremely small particle sizes cause low permeablility and high adsorption capacity. Molecular diffusion is the dominating transport process and therefore relevant for safety assessment.</p> <p>We applied positron emission tomography (PET) for investigating diffusion of <sup>22</sup>Na<sup>+</sup> in Opalinus clay rock. This enables to derive diffusion parameters on the macroscopic scale of drill cores (diameter 100 mm), and thus to consider effects of anisotropy and heterogeneities. This method is complementary to laboratory measurements with common diffusion cells, which can hardly elucidate such macroscopical spatial effects.<br> Here, we present the measuring data as motion picture. The underlying PET-data are 20 scans over a period of 143 days after injection of synthetic Opalinus pore water, labelled with Na-22, into an axial blind hole.</p>
