D-SET: Probing the evolution of fault properties during the seismic cycle with Deep Learning

This dataset has been developed to analyze fault zone properties affected by the Norcia mainshock on October 30, 2016. It comprises waveform data from nine seismic stations surrounding the rupture site of the Vettore fault segment. Waveforms were selectively gathered from within a 3 km band perpendicular to the fault, exclusively including seismic events deeper than 2 km to minimize anthropogenic sources and surface-based seismic noise. The dataset is balanced to diminish the influence of Amatrice aftershocks, extending asymmetrically 15 km northeast and 4 km southwest of the Norcia epicenter, and only includes events with magnitudes greater than Mw 0.5 to ensure data quality.

Multipath aware Scheduling for High Reliability and Fault Tolerance in Low Power Industrial Networks

The Industrial Internet of Things is expected to enable the Industry 4.0 through the large deployment of low-
power devices. However, industrial applications require most of the time high reliability close to 100%, and
low end-to-end delays. Thus, most industrial wireless networks rely on a strict schedule of the transmissions
to avoid collisions, and implement frequency hopping to combat external interference. In multihop topologies,
the network has to decide both when the transmissions have to be scheduled, and which router can forward
the packets. To be fault-tolerant, multipath routing consists in exploiting several paths in parallel. We
exploit here a braided path routing structure, where each router has several possible next hops. Thus, we
can cope with any fault along the path, while still providing a remaining operational path. We propose
also a scheduling algorithm, where multiple transmitters are attached to a single cell, to the same receiver.
The schedule is constructed such that only one transmitter is active at a time, and is consequently collision-
free. Mutualizing the same cell for several transmitters reduces the energy consumption and increases the
network capacity.

Dynamic weakening in sandstone-derived fault gouges during simulated small-magnitude earthquakes under variable loading and environmental conditions

Faults exhibit dynamic weakening during large displacements (>1 m) at seismic slip velocities (>0.1 m/s), but the role of this weakening in small-displacement induced earthquakes (M 3–4), such as those in the Groningen Gas Field (the Netherlands), remains unclear. We conducted seismic slip-pulse experiments on Slochteren sandstone gouges (SSG) using a rotary-shear apparatus to investigate their dynamic behavior. Pre-sheared gouge layers, confined between ~1.5 mm thick sandstone host blocks, were subjected to slip pulses at initial effective normal stresses of 4.9–16.6 MPa and pore fluid pressures of 0.1 and 1 MPa under undrained conditions. Slip pulses reached peak velocities of 1.8 m/s, accelerations up to 42 m/s², and displacements of 7.5–15 cm, using either dry Argon or water as pore fluid at ambient temperatures. Water-saturated gouges showed rapid weakening from a peak friction of ~0.7 to ~0.3, with early dilatancy followed by slower ongoing dilation. In contrast, Argon-filled samples exhibited only subtle weakening. Our findings confirm that water-saturated SSG weakens substantially during slip, with minimal dependence on normal stress, slip acceleration, or displacement, while dry samples do not. Microstructural analysis indicates no systematic relationship between PSZ width and frictional work or power input densities, suggesting that wear or heat production alone does not govern PSZ growth. Instead, thermal pore fluid pressurization, potentially involving water phase transitions at asperity scales, may drive weakening in short-displacement, induced seismic events.

Late Quaternary slip rate of the Aksay segment and its fast decreasing gradient along the Altyn Tagh fault

Constraining the fault slip rate could reveal the strain accumulation and partitioning pattern. The Aksay segment, the eastern segment of the ATF (Altyn Tagh Fault), as the starting area where the slip rate of ATF decreases, is a strain partitioning zone. The spatial and temporal distribution of fault slip rate along the Aksay segment is of great significance to clarify the role of it in the strain-partitioning of the eastern ATF. We determined the slip rate of four sites along the Aksay segment respectively. The results demonstrated that the slip rate decreased dramatically with an overwhelmingly high slip gradient of ~9.8 mm/yr/100 km within a distance of ~50 km. The slip rate gradient at the Aksay segment is ~4 times of that of the Subei segment to the eastward termination of the ATF. We proposed that the decreased slip rate was absorbed principally by the uplifting of the Danghe Nan Shan. Our results indicated that the slip rate gradient along the ATF was not uniform, and decreased eastward with variable slip rate gradients at different segments, resulting in the uplifting of the mountains oblique with the ATF.

Data from: Frictional stability of metamorphic epidote in granitoid faults under hydrothermal conditions and implications for injection-induced seismicity

The effect of low-grade metamorphic epidote on fault stability in granitoids at shallow depth is not well understood. We present structured laboratory observations of epidote and simulated Pohang granodiorite (an EGS site) gouges and mixtures to evaluate their frictional responses. The experiments were performed on powdered rock gouges at a constant confining pressure of 110 MPa, pore fluid pressures of 42 and 63 MPa, temperatures of 100-250℃ and epidote percentages in the range of 0-100 vol.%. Results show that the simulated Pohang granodiorite gouge is frictionally strong (friction coefficient of ~0.71) but exhibits a transition from velocity-strengthening to velocity-weakening behavior at in-situ temperatures >150℃. Epidote gouge displays similar frictional strength to the simulated granodiorite gouge but a stronger velocity-weakening response at 150℃. Increasing the epidote content in the homogeneously mixed gouges maintains the high frictional strength but increases velocity-weakening response approximately proportionately with epidote content. Modes of epidote precipitation likely control patch dimension and this in turn potentially changes the response of the 50:50 epidote-granodiorite mixed gouges in different geometric configurations. However, 50:50 mixtures that are variously homogeneously mixed, encapsulated and checkerboarded in their architectures are insensitive to their various geometries – all reflect the high frictional strength and strong velocity-weakening response of 100:0 pure epidote. This suggests that small volume percentages of epidote present as thin coatings on fractures and faults can impart velocity-weakening behavior, independent of individual patch size and can thereby support the potential seismic reactivation of faults. Considering the frictional and stability properties of epidote at conditions typical of shallow depths, the presence of low-grade metamorphism exerts a potentially important control on fault stability in granitoids with relevance as a marker mineral for susceptibility to injection-induced seismicity.
