Climatological characteristics of thunderstorm clouds over the Tibetan Plateau indicated by TRMM/RPFs with lightning

<p>The uploaded are the data associated with the figures in the paper titled &quot;Climatological characteristics of thunderstorm clouds over the Tibetan Plateau indicated by TRMM/RPFs with lightning&quot; which is submitted to the JGR.</p> <p>Using radar precipitation feature (RPF) data from 1998 to 2014 derived from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite observations, we analyzed the activity and properties of thunderstorm clouds (TCs) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and compared them with those over two contrasting land regions (CR1 and CR2). We revealed the properties of TCs over the TP including their flash rate, flash density, flash properties (duration, length and radiance), horizontal and vertical extent, and vertical profiles of reflectivity and compared them with those over CR1 and CR2. We further suggested a comparison of the effective charge regions (ECRs) in the TCs over the three regions and indicated the possible relationship between the flash rate of the TC and number of ECRs as well as between the flash density of the TC and the proportional ECR area. A conceptual sketch map was proposed that reveals the uniqueness of TCs over the TP. The results indicate that TCs over the central TP are most active; generally, the flash rates, flash properties, and sizes of the TCs are greater over the eastern TP than over the western TP. Meanwhile, the TCs over the southern and western TP have a larger vertical extent and flash density, respectively. The analysis of monthly and diurnal variations indicated the prominent preference of TC activity to occur in the warm season and afternoon, and multiple variations of TC properties.</p>

Data from: Altitudinal biodiversity patterns of seed plants along Gongga Mountain in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

The mechanisms underlying elevation patterns in species and phylogenetic diversity remain a central issue in ecology and are vital for effective biodiversity conservation in the mountains. Gongga Mountain, located in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, represents one of the longest elevational gradients (ca. 6500 m, from ca. 1000 - 7556 m) in the world for studying species diversity patterns. However, the elevational gradient and conservation of plant species diversity and phylogenetic diversity in this mountain remain poorly studied. Here, we compiled the elevational distributions of 2,667 native seed plant species occurring in Gongga Mountain, and estimated the species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, species density, and phylogenetic relatedness across ten elevation belts and five vegetation zones. The results indicated that species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of all seed plants showed a hump-shaped pattern, peaking at 1800 - 2200 m. Species diversity was significantly correlated with phylogenetic diversity and species density. The floras in temperate coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests, sub-alpine coniferous forests and alpine shrublands and meadows were significantly phylogenetically clustered, whereas the floras in evergreen broad-leaved forests had phylogenetically random structure. Both climate and human pressure had strong correlation with species diversity, phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic structure of seed plants. Our results suggest that the evergreen broad-leaved forests and coniferous broad-leaved mixed forests at low to mid elevations deserve more conservation efforts. This study improves our understanding on the elevational gradients of species and phylogenetic diversity and their determinants, and provides support for improving seed plants conservation in Gongga Mountain.

Data from: Different sensitivity and threshold in response to nitrogen addition in four alpine grasslands along a precipitation transect on the Northern Tibetan Plateau

The increase of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has resulted in some terrestrial ecological changes. In order to identify the response of sensitive indicators to N input and estimate the sensitivity and saturation thresholds in alpine grasslands, we set up a series of multi-level N addition experiments in four types of alpine grasslands (alpine meadow (AM), alpine meadow-steppe (AMS), alpine steppe (AS), and alpine desert steppe (ADS)) along with a decreasing precipitation gradient from east to west on the Northern Tibetan Plateau. N addition only had significant effects on species diversity in AMS, while had no effects on the other three alpine grasslands. Aboveground biomass of grasses and overall community in ADS were enhanced with increasing N addition, but such effects did not occur in AS. Legume biomass in ADS and AS showed similar unimodal patterns, and exhibited a decreasing tend in AM. Regression fitting showed that the most sensitive functional groups were grasses, and the N saturation thresholds were 103, 115, 136 and 156 kg N hm-2 year-1 in AM, AMS, AS and ADS, respectively. This suggests that alpine grasslands become more and more insensitive to N input with precipitation decrease. N saturation thresholds also negatively correlated with soil N availability. N sensitivity differences caused by precipitation and nutrient availability suggest that alpine grasslands along the precipitation gradient will respond differently to atmospheric N deposition in the future global change scenario. This different sensitivity should also be taken into consideration when using N fertilization to restore degraded grasslands.

Data from: Temperature mediated responses of carbon fluxes to precipitation variabilities in an alpine meadow ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau

Effects of climate warming and changing precipitation on ecosystem carbon fluxes have been intensively studied. However, how they co-regulate carbon fluxes is still elusive for some under-studied ecosystems. To fill the gap, we examined net ecosystem productivity (NEP), gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) responses to multi-level of temperature increments (control, warming 1, warming 2, warming 3, warming 4) in three contrasting hydrological growing seasons in a typical semiarid alpine meadow. We found that carbon fluxes responded to precipitation variations more strongly in low-level warming treatments than in high-level ones. The distinct responses were attributable to different soil water conditions and community composition under low-level and high-level warming during the three growing seasons. In addition, carbon fluxes were much more sensitive to decreased than to increased precipitation in low-level warming treatments, but not in high-level ones. At a regional scale, this negative asymmetry was further corroborated. This study reveals that future precipitation changes, particularly decreased precipitation would induce significant change in carbon fluxes, and the effect magnitude is regulated by climate warming size.

Data from: New Olonbulukia material and its related assemblage reveal an early radiation of stem Caprini along the north of the Tibetan Plateau

Living Caprini are dominant bovids in the pan-Tibetan area that are strongly adapted to dry steppe and high mountain meadow habitats. Some taxa with Holarctic distributions, such as Ovis, were thought to originate on the Tibetan Plateau and subsequently dispersed elsewhere, which was depicted as an "out of Tibet" story. However, except for some information on a stem caprine assemblage from the Qaidam Basin, the early evolution of Caprini around the Tibetan Plateau is poorly known. Here, we report new material of Olonbulukia tsaidamensis, which was a member of this stem caprine assemblage, from the Wuzhong region, northern China, confirming similarity of the Wuzhong Fauna and 'Qaidam Fauna'. Based on a metric study of horncores from the 'Qaidam' and Wuzhong faunas, we recognized six taxa from this stem caprine assemblage: Olonbulukia tsaidamensis, Olonbulukia sp., Qurliqnoria cheni, Tossunnoria pseudibex, ? Protoryx cf. enanus, and cf. Pachytragus sp. Among these taxa, Qurliqnoria and Tossunnoria are probably related to some extant Tibetan endemic species, such as Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) and Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus), and others might be ancestral to the Turolian caprine assemblages and even possibly gave rise to the extant Caprina. This work reveals an early radiation of stem caprines along the northern side of the rising Tibetan Plateau and indicates a mixed pattern of pan-Tibetan stem caprine evolution prior to their dispersal out of the Tibetan Plateau.
