Interviews for New Business Models for Pharmaceutical Innovation and Access to Medicines - Pandemic Preparedness
<p>These supplementary materials represent the partial dataset in the form of semi-structured interviews, collected and analyzed in the research article "Unlocking global access to medicines for pandemics: the potential and limits of alternative innovation models". This article is one of the outcomes of the "New Business Models for Pharmaceutical Innovation and Global Access to Medicines" research project, conducted at the Global Health Center, within the Geneva Graduate Institute. Quantitation of human sperm DNA accessibility and DNA nicking by NicE-view and Nick translation imaging
<ul> <li>Accessible or nicked DNA from human sperm was labelled using NicE-view, ATAC-See or nick translation.</li> <li>For nick translation and NicE-view 60 individuals were profiled, for 57 of these individuals two samples were available (1 for total sperm and 1 for sperm selected for motility via the swim-up method), while for the final 3 only total sperm was available (filename: Gill_NicE_view_CellProfiler.csv).</li> <li>For ATAC-See data from 5 individuals were generated (Gill_ATAC_See_CellProfiler.csv).</li> <li>For a further 6 individuals sperm were isolated by FACS following labelling with the DNA dye CMA3 and subjected to T4 NicE-view (Gill_NicE_view_CMA3_Cell_Profiler.csv).</li> <li>Finally a data set containing double labelling of DNA nicks and DNA accessibility was generated for 6 individuals (Gill NicE_view_Double_Labelling_CellProfiler.csv).</li> <li>For each sample 400 Z-projections were generated and quantified using CellProfiler. Data are saved in .csv files.</li> <li>A further .csv file contains metadata relating to demographic, hormonal and reproductive parameters of the study participants (Gill_NicE_view_participant.csv).</li> <li>A series of 13 R scripts (number 01-12, and a general script containing helper functions) are included to analyze the data and generate the figures found in Gill et al. Open Access Author Contracts Public Dataset
<p>This dataset includes the deidentified respondent demographic data of a survey distributed to open access journal editors from journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). In addition to respondent demographics, the dataset includes the qualitative analyses results conducted by the authors about author's contracts which were solicited as part of the survey. These include basic elements of the contracts provided by the respondents, other terms covered, sharing restriction, and contradictory terms. The contracts themselves or direct text from the contracts is not included in the dataset.</p>
Solar wind access to grains in the upper layer of regolith
<p>The directory contains the scripts and output files from running COUPI DEM for determining the distribution of protons in upper layer of regolith. This is the model data for the paper "Solar wind access to grains in the upper layer of regolith" accepted to JGR Planets.</p> <p>Each case represents different packing density. The cases are described by Paul Duvoy in file Cases_paul_duvoy.xlsx.</p> <p>Most scripts to extract and process modeled data are located in utils and<br> gnuplot directory.</p> <p> </p>
OAPEN-CH – The impact of open access on scientific monographs in Switzerland. A project conducted by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
<p>The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) launched the OAPEN-CH pilot project in summer 2014. At that time, it had introduced new funding policies that only covered books that were published online and openly accessible after an embargo period of no more than 24 months. The pilot study set out to learn more about the changes to academic publishing and pave the way for future adaptations to funding policies.</p> <p>The findings of the shared learning process are now available. They are encouraging in that they produce a clear verdict for the scientific monograph: a digital edition that is freely available on the Internet increases the trackability, visibility and use of monographs. Open access does not have a negative impact on printed book sales. Facilitating and promoting open access will benefit the academic community and society at large as well as publishers and funders.</p> <p>The results of the OAPEN-CH pilot study have already been integrated into the new open access policy of the SNSF, which entered into force on 1 April 2018.</p>
Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Open Access Compliance Monitoring 2017
<p><strong>I. Executive summary</strong></p> <p>The Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which is Austria's main funding organisation for basic research, encourages and helps all project leaders and project staff members to make their peer-reviewed research results freely available on the Internet. Since 1 January 2016, open access has been mandatory for all peer-reviewed publications listed in final reports on FWF-funded projects. Any exceptions must be clearly indicated and justified. For projects that started after 1 January 2015, open access has been compulsory for all peer-reviewed publications.</p> <p>All principal investigators in FWF-funded projects are obliged to submit a final report within three months of completing their projects. In 2017 all in all 608 final reports were submitted to the FWF, 42 out of them couldn't report publications by now.</p> <p>The publications and other data mentioned in those reports are archived and analysed by the FWF. This report examines the state of compliance with open access requirements on the basis of final project reports submitted in the year 2017.</p> <p>Main findings:</p> <ul> <li>A total of 8.398 publications were listed in the final project reports submitted in 2017.</li> <li>Of those publications, 6.439 were conclusively identified as peer-reviewed.</li> <li>Regarding compliance with the FWF's Open Access Policy, the report shows that 90% of the peer-reviewed publications that arose from submitted final reports of FWF projects in 2017 are openly accessible (2015: 83%, 2016: 92%).</li> <li>The most frequently chosen option is hybrid open access (41%). Since last year's report, the use of green open access has declined by 5% green open access and by 2 % gold open access. Other open access has increased by 4%, and hybrid open access by 1%.</li> <li>The majority of peer-reviewed publications submitted are journal articles, 91% of which are openly accessible.</li> <li>The lowest rate of compliance with the FWF's Open Access Policy can be found in editions, contributions to edited volumes and monographs (66%) an increase by 8% since last year's report.</li> <li>Although open access is not compulsory, 51% of non peer-reviewed publications are freely available through the internet.</li> <li>The absolute number of publications listed in final reports in 2017 includes 715 publications that are mentioned several times in different projects; however, those repetitions do not ultimately affect the relative share of open access publications (90%).</li> <li>56% of all peer-reviewed publications without open access originate from the "Special Research Programmes" (SFB). Since these reserach networks have a long duration, the open access policy of the FWF often does not yet apply to them.</li> </ul> <p><strong>II. Bias</strong></p> <p>All publications were entered in the FWF’s database manually and with the utmost care when the final project reports were received. Nevertheless, it is not possible to rule out minor errors entirely. Moreover, some systematic problems need to be solved in the future; the FWF is currently preparing to implement a research information system in which FWF-funded researchers will be able to enter and update their research data on an ongoing basis.</p> <ul> <li>Due to the amount of data involved, it was not possible to check the current open access status of all publications twice. The last check was performed in January 2018.</li> <li>In some cases, the embargo period may have expired after submission, and publications labelled "Other open access" in the FWF’s database may now be accessible through green open access.</li> </ul> <p>Whenever the status "peer-reviewed" could not be clearly identified according to FWF guidelines, the publications were classified as non peer-reviewed.</p>
Open Access in the Global South: Perspectives from the Open and Collaborative Science in Development Network
<p>As with science in general, the discussion around open access has generally been driven by the institutions and perspectives of western or global North countries. However, approaches to open access are far more diverse and there are alternative approaches that have not gained visibility, especially in historically marginalized communities. This presentation will present some key lessons of the OCSDNet http://ocsdnet.org. The OCSDNet is a research network that engaged in participatory research and consultation with scientists, development practitioners, community members and activists from 26 countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia to understand the values at the core of open science in development. What we learned is that there is not one right way to do open science, and “openness” requires constant negotiation and reflection, and the process will always differ by context due to historical and socio-political factors. The set of seven values and principles at the core of the OCSDNet manifesto will be discussed for a more inclusive open science in development. More important, we will discuss the implications of these values in relation to the aspirations and features of COAR’s Next Generation Repository.</p>
Datentabelle Inhalte der Open-Access-Policies deutscher Hochschulen
<p>Open-Access-Policies von 47 deutschen Universitäten und 5 Fachhochschulen wurden inhaltlich ausgewertet und den „Open Access Policy Guidelines for Research Performing Organizations“ des Projekts PASTEUR4OA (1) gegenübergestellt. Diese Auswertung von Open-Access-Policies kann Hochschulen, die eine Open-Access-Policy neu erarbeiten oder eine bestehende Policy überarbeiten, Anregungen geben, welche Inhalte berücksichtigt werden sollten.</p> <p>Open access policies of 47 German universities and 5 universities of applied sciences were analyzed and checked against the "Open Access Policy Guidelines for Research Performing Organizations" of the project PASTEUR4OA (1).
