Invasion by an exotic species in a three-species competition-diffusion system
<p>We consider the situation where an exotic species <em>w</em> invades an ecosystem inhabited by two native species <em>u</em> and <em>v</em>. All species are competing for the same limited resource. Supposing that <em>u</em> and <em>v</em> are not able to coexist in the absence of the invader, we want to determine whether a successful invasion by <em>w</em> may allow all species to coexist (competitor-mediated coexistence). Mathematically, this problem can be modelled by the following three-species competition-diffusion system<br> <span class="math-tex">\( \left\{ \begin{alignedat}{6} u_t &= d_1 \, \Delta u &&+ (r_1 &&- u &&- b_{12} \, v &&- b_{13} \, w &&)\,u, \\ v_t &= d_2 \, \Delta v &&+ (r_2 &&- v &&- b_{21} \, u &&- b_{23} \, w &&)\,v, \\ w_t &= d_3 \, \Delta w &&+ (r_3 &&- w &&- b_{31} \, u &&- b_{32} \, v &&)\,w, \end{alignedat} \right.\)</span><br> where all parameters are positive constants.</p> <p>We are interested in the case in which the invading species is weaker than the native ones, i.e., it is not able to survive in the diffusion-free system obtained by setting <em>d</em><sub>1</sub> = <em>d</em><sub>2</sub> = <em>d</em><sub>3</sub> = 0.<br> We fix all parameters as<br> <span class="math-tex">\( \begin{aligned} & d_1 = d_2 = d_3 = 1, \\ & r_1 = r_2 = 28, \\ & \begin{aligned} b_{12} &= 22/21, & b_{13} &= 4, \\ b_{21} &= 1.87, & b_{23} &= 3/4, \\ b_{31} &= 26/21, & b_{32} &= 22/21, \\ \end{aligned} \end{aligned}\)</span><br> and leave <em>r</em><sub>3</sub>, which measures the strength of the exotic species, as a free parameter. Depending on the value of <em>r</em><sub>3</sub>, the invasion can be either successful or not and competitor-mediated coexistence may or may not occur, as can be seen in the movies here presented. The species <em>u</em>, <em>v</em> and <em>w</em> are denoted by the red, green and blue colours respectively. The yellow line marks the interface between the species <em>u</em> and <em>v</em>. We remark that competitor-mediated coexistence only occurs for intermediate values of <em>r</em><sub>3</sub>.</p>
Interaction of planarly stable trivial and non-trivial travelling waves in a three-species competition-diffusion system
<p>We consider the situation where an exotic species <em>w</em> invades an ecosystem inhabited by two native species <em>u</em> and <em>v</em>. All species are competing for the same limited resource. Supposing that <em>u</em> and <em>v</em> are not able to coexist in the absence of the invader, we want to determine whether a successful invasion by <em>w</em> may allow all species to coexist (competitor-mediated coexistence). Depending on the value of <em>r</em>3, the invasion can be either successful or not and competitor-mediated coexistence may or may not occur.</p> <p>It turns out that if <em>r</em>3 lies in a certain range of values, the three-species competition-diffusion system admits two planarly stable travelling wave solutions. In the movies here presented, the result of the interaction of these two waves in two spatial dimensions is reported for several value of <em>r</em>3. The species <em>u</em>, <em>v</em> and <em>w</em> are denoted by the red, green and blue colours respectively. The yellow line marks the interface between the species <em>u</em> and <em>v</em>. As the value of the free parameter decreases, we observe a transition from a regular spiral pattern, to a breathing spiral and finally to a complex spatio-temporal pattern born from the break-up of the spiral. This complex pattern may be either periodic or chaotic in the long run, as can be seen in the movies for longer time intervals <em>T</em>.</p>

Data from: Free-living bacterial communities associated with tubeworm (Ridgeia piscesae) aggregations in contrasting diffuse flow hydrothermal vent habitats at the Main Endeavour Field, Juan de Fuca Ridge
We systematically studied free-living bacterial diversity within aggregations of the vestimentiferan tubeworm Ridgeia piscesae sampled from two contrasting flow regimes (High Flow and Low Flow) in the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents Marine Protected Area (MPA) on the Juan de Fuca Ridge (Northeast Pacific). Eight samples of particulate detritus were recovered from paired tubeworm grabs from four vent sites. Most sequences (454 tag and Sanger methods) were affiliated to the Epsilonproteobacteria, and the sulfur-oxidizing genus Sulfurovum was dominant in all samples. Gammaproteobacteria were also detected, mainly in Low Flow sequence libraries, and were affiliated with known methanotrophs and decomposers. The cooccurrence of sulfur reducers from the Deltaproteobac- teria and the Epsilonproteobacteria suggests internal sulfur cycling within these habitats. Other phyla detected included Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia, and Deinococcus–Thermus. Statisti- cally significant relationships between sequence library composition and habitat type suggest a predictable pattern for High Flow and Low Flow environments. Most sequences significantly more represented in High Flow libraries were related to sulfur and hydrogen oxidizers, while mainly heterotrophic groups were more represented in Low Flow libraries. Differences in temperature, avail- able energy for metabolism, and stability between High Flow and Low Flow habitats potentially explain their distinct bacterial communities.
Data from: Nutrient distribution and absorption in the colonial hydroid Podocoryna carnea is sequentially diffusive and directional
The distribution and absorption of ingested protein was characterized within a colony of Podocoryna carnea when a single polyp was fed. Observations were conducted at multiple spatial and temporal scales at three different stages of colony ontogeny with an artificial food item containing Texas Red conjugated albumin. Food pellets were digested and all tracer absorbed by digestive cells within the first 2–3 hours post-feeding. The preponderance of the label was located in the fed polyp and in a transport-induced diffusion pattern surrounding the fed polyp. After 6 hours post-feeding particulates re-appeared in the gastrovascular system and their absorption increased the area over which the nutrients were distributed, albeit still in a pattern that was centered on the fed polyp. At later intervals, tracer became concentrated in some stolon tips, but not in others, despite the proximity of these stolons either to the fed polyp or to adjacent stolons receiving nutrients. Distribution and absorption of nutrients is sequentially diffusive and directional.
DATA_Diffusion-free scaling in rotating spherical RB convection
<p>Simulation details. All simulations are run at $Pr=1$ and $\eta=0.6$. The columns from left to right indicate: case number, Rayleigh number $Ra$, Rossby number $Ro$, the number of grid points in the longitudinal, radial, and co-latitudinal direction $N_\theta \times N_r \times N_\varphi$. A rotational symmetry order $n_s$ is applied to reduce computational costs, indicating the longitude of the computational domain as $2\pi/n_s$. The average heat transfer $Nu$ across the inner and the outer sphere, and the regional heat transfer across the outer sphere $Nu_{I,II,III}$ (see figure 3(b) of the manuscript). Note that region $\mathrm{II}$ and $\mathrm{III}$ are only defined when a maximum prograde velocity is identified.</p>
