SBC LTER: Reef: Long-term experiment: Algal Biomass

These data are taxon-specific estimates of macroalgal standing biomass (grams dry mass m-2) recorded in 40 m x 2 m transects in of each sampling plot at SBC LTER's long-term kelp removal experiment sites. Estimates of macroalgal biomass are derived from measurements of abundance that are recorded as either density or percent cover. Density data are combined with allometric measurements to yield estimates of standing dry mass for taxa whose abundance is measured as density. Mean dry mass per individual is also reported for taxa whose abundance is measured as density. Taxon-specific data of percent cover are converted to biomass using relationships derived from field measurements of percent cover and laboratory measurements of dry mass. Data are updated annually. The kelp removal experiment was initiated in 2008 at four reef sites along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. The following three giant kelp manipulations are maintained in sampling plots at each site: - Control: Macrocystis pyriferais left intact in a 2000 m2plot. - Annual removal: Macrocystis pyriferais removed from an adjacent 2000 m2plot once each winter and allowed to re-colonize over the course of the year. - Continuous removal: Macrocystis pyriferais removed from a 200 m2area within the 2000 m2 plot on each sampling date.

Effect of Long-Term Nitrogen Fertilization on Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated with a Dominant Grass in a Chihuahuan Desert Grassland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005)

We studied the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a semiarid grassland and the effect of long-term nitrogen (N) fertilization on this fungal community. Root samples of Bouteloua gracilis were collected at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (New Mexico, USA) from control and N-amended plots that have been fertilized since 1995. Small subunit rDNA was amplified using AMF specific primers NS31 and AM1. The diversity of AMF was low in comparison with other ecosystems, only seven operational taxonomic units (OTU) were found in B. gracilis and all belong to the genus Glomus. The dominant OTU was closely related to the ubiquitous G. intraradices/G. fasciculatum group. N-amended plots showed a reduction in the abundance of the dominant OTU and an increase in AMF diversity. The greater AMF diversity in roots from N-amended plots may have been the result of displacement of the dominant OTU, which facilitated detection of uncommon AMF. The long-term implications of AMF responses to N enrichment for plant carbon allocation and plant community structure remain unclear.

Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research Program Plant Species List

Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program has monitored plant species cover, height, abundance (counts), and biomass since 1999. This list represents the plant species found at the Sevilleta, including those species featured in long-term datasets on plant abundance and biomass. Species codes have been updated to the most recent taxonomic designations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (plants.sc.egov.usda.gov), and are listed by their kartez codes, or character and number symbols.

Long-Term Fertilization Plots in Swale Vegetation on Hog Island, VA 2015 -

Nutrient enrichment plots were installed on Hog Island in 2015 (Moulton, 2017) following a modified Nutrient Network (nutnet.org) protocol. Plots followed a randomized design with three plot treatments (N = nitrogen, P = phosphorus, NP = nitrogen + phosphorus, and C = Control), replicated five times per treatment (N = 20 total experimental units, n = 5 per treatment). Each unit was 3 m2 with 1 m walkways. Units were subdivided into four 1 m2 subplots. N, P, and NP are applied in two applications, 30 days apart, at a rate of 10 g m-2 yr-1. N was added in the form of slow release urea (46-0-0) and P in the form of triple phosphate (0-45-0). Aboveground vegetation was harvested to ground level within a 0.1 x 1 m frame and extrapolated to represent plot level productivity (g m-2). Samples were dried for 72 h at 60 C and weighed (g). Species composition was sampled using areal cover estimation (%) of each species, bare ground, and dead plant material, such that total cover of each plot summed to 100%. Species cover was assessed in 1 m2 sub plots that had not previously been used for destructive sampling.
